How to use log tongs on a one-hand scissor

Updated: October 2026

The round is muddy, and hugging it bends your back before it has moved a metre. How to use log tongs, on a one-hand scissor, is three movements: set the points in sound wood, move without a jerk, and let go only when the log is already where it will stay. This is a yard stroke, not a fireplace tong and not a crane drill. The listings are the [log lifting tongs comparison](/hub/pliers/log-lifting-tongs). The Products Compared editorial team used HSE guidance and amazon.co.uk files from 16 October 2026, and did not film a lift. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Set the jaws

Stand the round where it cannot roll into your feet, on level ground. Open the scissor and set both points in sound wood, not rot and not loose bark. Push the handle down so the hooks bite. That is the GAESHOW action, and the other hand tongs here work the same way. Pulling up is the release, and it waits until the log is supported. The points have to enter the wood. On FITOOL, several owners say the tips arrived blunt and that they filed them. One review says the points are sharp and should be kept away from children. If the points skate, file the tip or move the bite. If the round is wider than the opening, the tong does not bite. Do not learn the stroke on a slope. Jaw choice is on the log tongs buying guide.

Move the log

A short round you can keep close may be carried. A longer piece is a drag: points in, the far end on the ground, your feet out of the line if a point pulls out. The tong does not make the log lighter. The filter figures, which are not a legal maximum, are on log tongs lifting or skidding. HSE’s handling guidance is to plan the put-down, keep the load close, and not to jerk or twist. If you need to turn the log, put it down and take it again. If the pivot is locked, the berjalan UK review says the bolts arrive tight: loosen them slightly and oil them.

Let go, then look after the tool

Release only when the log will stay put. Set it on flat ground or against a stack that cannot kick, then pull the handle up so the points leave. If you pull up while you are still walking, the round can roll onto a foot. Oil the pivot after you have backed a tight bolt off. Do not wind the joint until the tong is a rigid bar. Hang the tong where children cannot reach a tip you have just sharpened. Oiling the hinge does not add a working load limit.

When this tool is the wrong tool

Stop when the jaw does not fit. A 300 mm claim does not cover a round you have measured wider, and forcing the points is the bend more than one FITOOL review describes, including on logs named at 10 kg. Stop for a burning grate. These are cold-timber tools. Stop for a lodged stem, a winch on a slope, or any butt that would put you underneath a moving piece. That is a second person or a machine. A cracked weld or a broken hook clip is not repaired by a more careful hand stroke. A machine butt is hand log tongs or a tractor grapple.

Common questions

Which way do I push the handle to bite?
Push the handle down so the points enter the wood, which is the GAESHOW action for a one-handed scissor. Pull the handle up only to release, and only after the log is supported. A 4-claw closes when the chain goes tight, which is a different tool.
How do I let go without dropping the log on my foot?
Put the log down first, where it cannot roll, with your boots out of that line. Then pull the handle up. HSE’s guidance is to put a load down and then adjust it, rather than steering it in the air. The tong improves the grip. It does not make a fumble harmless.
What if the points skate on bark?
Move the bite into sound wood, or file a blunt tip, which is what several FITOOL reviews say they had to do. TOPWAY’s bullet claims a grip on damp wood, and the points still will not hold rot. If the jaw is simply the wrong width, change the setup rather than the pressure.
What if the pivot is locked solid?
Back the bolts off slightly and oil the joint, which is the berjalan review’s instruction. The scissor has to open and close. A pivot wound tight turns the tong into a bar. If the arms still will not move, stop using that tool. Do not hammer the joint and carry on.
Can I use them one-handed on a long length?
You can hold the near end and drag, with the far end left on the ground. GAESHOW’s one-handed line is the handle bite, not a promise that a long log is light. If the free end can swing into your leg, use a second person or leave that piece for a machine.
When do I stop and call someone?
Stop when the jaw will not close, when you cannot put the weight down without a jerk, or when the piece is lodged, on a slope, or meant to hang from a chain. A hand tong is a handling aid for one person and one piece. Call someone for a cracked coupling or any lift where a person could stand underneath.
