Rose arch buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a gap where a wooden arch used to stand, and the amazon.co.uk results all say heavy duty. A rose arch buying guide has to start with the kilograms, because a 1.47 kg tube and a 6 kg hoop are different structures under the same words. This page is the order of checks: mass and tube, then opening and headroom, then side depth, footing, and finish. The [rose arch comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/rose-arch) ranks the ten listings. Prices and stars are amazon.co.uk figures in GBP, from the Products Compared editorial team. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the listed weight, not the title

Under about 4 kg at 2.4 m high is the light class here. DIVCHI is £10.99 and 1.47 kg. ALAYSTAR is £10.95 and 3 kg. The Harbour pair is £21.99 and 3.82 kg together. Forever Speed prints 198 g, which is not a credible mass for a 240 cm steel arch. The step up is a PE-coated tube. The Caroeas 120 cm hoop is £62.99 and 6 kg, with a 20 mm tube claimed. The 150 cm sibling is £64.99 and listed at 5 kg. Both show 4.6 out of 5 from 119 ratings, and the review text overlaps, so that is one sample printed twice. SCENDOR is the heaviest row at £159 and 13.5 kg. If you are replacing rotten timber, start at the 6 kg hoop, and see who should skip it on the best rose arch page.

Opening, headroom, and side depth

Path hoops in this set are about 120–150 cm wide and about 240 cm high. The Caroeas 120 cm model is 120 × 240 × 40 cm, and the 150 cm model is the same height with a wider mouth. unho’s height is about 160 cm, which a reviewer at 5 ft 7 in could walk through, so that is a crop arch. The extra-wide Caroeas is 360 cm wide and 275 cm high. Side depth is where a climbing rose is tied. Cheap portals here are about 38 cm deep. The Caroeas hoops are 40 cm, and the wide and square models are 50 cm. DIVCHI and SCENDOR do not state a depth. A shallow portal gives you less tube to tie to. Tying is on the rose arch for climbing roses page.

Footing and finish are maintenance, not a promise

Pointed legs and short spikes are what these boxes imply. DIVCHI’s push-in tubes and ALAYSTAR’s pointed legs do not state a depth. The 6 kg Caroeas has soil feet and a pilot spike. unho claims six spikes, and SCENDOR’s spikes are 10.3 inches, about 26 cm. gardenarch.org.uk treats about 30–40 cm as a rule of thumb for metal legs in soft ground. That figure is the guide’s, not a depth printed on every ASIN here. A light hoop will not stay put on its own weight. Reviewers add a deeper hole, a fence tie, rocks, or postcrete when the wind moves the frame. Wind fixes are on the anchoring page. Powder coat and PE over galvanised steel both fail where steel is exposed, especially at screws and in the soil.

Which price band matches the job

Entry in this set is about £11–£22: DIVCHI, ALAYSTAR, Forever Speed, and the Harbour pair, for a season of annuals, clematis, or beans. Mid is about £40–£80: unho at £39.99, then the four Caroeas listings from £62.99 to £79.99. SCENDOR at £159 is the decorative end, 124 cm by 212 cm, hollow in one review that expected solid bar. A path you use all year is the 6 kg Caroeas job, with no long rust record in this folder. The 360 cm span fits only when the opening really is 3.6 m and two or three people can build it.

The England height check

In England, Class E can cover a structure incidental to a house. Within 2 m of a boundary the height limit is 2.5 m, and otherwise 3 m. The arch must not sit forward of the principal elevation, and the allowance does not apply in a listed curtilage or to flats. A 2.4 m hoop sits near that 2.5 m cap. The square Caroeas at 250 cm sits on the figure. The extra-wide Caroeas at 2.75 m is over it within 2 m of a boundary. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland use their own orders.

Common questions

How heavy is a heavy duty garden arch on amazon.co.uk?
In this set the words sit on frames from 1.47 kg to 13.5 kg. DIVCHI is 1.47 kg, the Caroeas 120 cm hoop is 6 kg, and SCENDOR is 13.5 kg. Use the kilogram line, and ignore Forever Speed’s printed 198 g.
How wide and tall should a path arch be?
For one person, about 120–150 cm wide and about 240 cm high, with 38–40 cm of side depth. unho at about 160 cm is a lower crop arch. Two people side by side need more than 120 cm.
Does a 2.4 m arch need planning permission in England?
A 2.4 m arch can fall inside Class E for a house, close to the 2.5 m cap within 2 m of a boundary. It must not sit forward of the principal elevation. The 2.75 m Caroeas span is over that figure. Check with the council if you are unsure.
Is powder coat the same as PE-coated galvanised steel?
They are different finishes, and neither is a lifetime promise. The light arches here are powder coated. The Caroeas hoop bullets describe PE on galvanised steel, though the 150 cm attribute says powder coated. Exposed steel is the failure on both.
When is a £11 arch the right buy?
For sweet peas, clematis, or a season of beans, including a weekend frame you do not want to concrete in. It is the wrong buy for a mature climbing rose or wisteria. For a path that replaces rotten timber, start at the 6 kg hoop.
