Garden kneeling pad buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are about to buy a garden kneeling pad on amazon.co.uk, and every thumbnail looks like a black rectangle until you read the size row. One pad is 17 mm thick. Another is 7 cm with poppers. Listings also mix waterproof, water-resistant and not water resistant on different materials. This garden kneeling pad buying guide walks thickness, width, foam and the water wording, using only the pads in our [knee cushion garden comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/knee-cushion-garden). It does not name a winner, and it does not replace pacing if your knee already hurts.

Thickness before the brand name

Garden writers often quote about 25 mm as a minimum and about 40 mm on concrete, gravel or paving. That is a rule of thumb, not a British Standard. In this comparison Marksman is 17 mm, Portwest KP05 is 2 cm, most EVA slabs are 4 cm or 40 mm, and the covered folders are 6 cm or 7 cm. On a patio, 17 mm foam compresses until you feel the slab. On soft loam the same thin pad may be enough for a few minutes of deadheading. Once you move to hardscape, shop in the 4 cm class or a 6 or 7 cm folder. Prices near £4 to £8 cover both Marksman at about £4.74 and ASelected at about £7.99, so the price band does not tell you the millimetres. WORKPRO’s NBR pair prints 36 mm and also 7 cm. Quote both, or quote neither.

Width for one knee or both

About 43 by 28 cm lets you shift both knees along a border. Marksman at 160 mm wide and Portwest at 30 by 20 cm suit one knee, and UK texts call them narrow. The Green Haven green folder lists 46 by 46 by 6 cm if you kneel square-on to a patio slab. A carrying hole does not widen the foam. It only moves the pad. If both knees must stay on it, start near 28 cm of width, not 16 cm.

Waterproof, water-resistant, or neither

Treat water words as the seller’s claim, not as dry trousers. Closed-cell EVA and NBR in this set are marketed as waterproof or water-resistant and are meant to be wiped or rinsed. Portwest’s row says not water resistant, so that pad is not a wet-bed pad. Covered memory foam adds fabric. FINE GARDEN’s 7 cm folder says water-resistant cover. A review of Green Haven’s black 7 cm folder says the cover still feels wet and holds dirt. The 6 cm green folder states neither word. There is no soak test behind these lines. Rinse a bare slab, or dry a folder before the shed.

What this pad will not do

A loose pad lowers pressure only for the minutes you kneel on it. The Health and Safety Executive treats kneeling as a risk you reduce by changing the task first. None of these ten listings shows an EN 14404 mark, so this foam is not site PPE for paid all-day work. A handle will not pull you upright. If standing up is the bottleneck, you need a framed kneeler or a stable stool. Smooth fabric can slide on a wet slope, and sharp gravel can still poke through foam with no hard shell. When the knee already hurts, read kneeling pad for bad knees before a thicker title overrides pacing.

If you are choosing now

If you will hose the pad after wet beds, stay with closed-cell EVA or NBR and read a not-water-resistant line as a no. If the shed shelf is the constraint, a folder stores flatter and the cover becomes the chore. If both knees must stay on the foam, do not buy a strip near 16 cm wide. Measure a conflicting size row when the parcel arrives, rather than quoting the friendlier number from the page.

Common questions

How thick should the pad be for a patio?
Aim for about 40 mm on hard ground as a gardener’s rule of thumb, not a British Standard. In this table that means the 4 cm EVA slabs or a 6 or 7 cm folder. A 17 mm pad is the short-job end of the range, and reviewers call it thin once you are on paving.
Is 17 mm or 2 cm enough?
Only for a very short kneel on soft soil, where the pad mainly keeps fabric off damp earth. Portwest at 2 cm is also listed as not water resistant, so it is a poor match for a wet vegetable bed even when the job is brief.
How wide if I use both knees?
Look near 28 cm of width, or the 46 cm square folder, so both knees can sit and shift. Under about 20 cm of width suits one knee. A 160 mm pad will leave the second knee on the ground.
Does waterproof on the title mean my trousers stay dry?
It means the seller claims the material resists water. Fabric covers can still feel damp after wet ground. Bare EVA can be rinsed if mud splashes up. The word itself is not a soak test, and it is not a promise of dry trousers.
When do I buy a folding cover instead of a slab?
When you want 6 or 7 cm of thickness and fold-flat storage, and you will clean and dry the cover before the shed. A slab is the rinseable option. Those are different jobs, even when the shelf prices sit close together.
Why do two rows on one listing disagree?
Amazon detail blocks often copy an old template. WORKPRO’s thickness lines, and one Green Haven folder’s width, are examples in this comparison. Treat the conflict as a reason to measure on delivery. Do not pick the friendlier number and ignore the other.
