How to fit window box brackets

Updated: 22 October 2026

The pack is on the table, or you want the sequence before you pay. This page is how to fit window box brackets so the empty trough sits, then the wet one, without guessing the rail by eye. It is not a ranking. Type choice stays on the [window box brackets buying guide](/hub/plant-accessories/flower-box-holder/sub/flower-box-holder-buying-guide). The eight amazon.co.uk rows stay on the [flower box holder comparison](/hub/plant-accessories/flower-box-holder). Wet weight, wind and the lease stay on the [balcony flower box holder](/hub/plant-accessories/flower-box-holder/sub/flower-box-holder-balcony) page. If you must not mark the rail, the clamp still follows the same empty-then-fill order; the hardware is nuts, not wall plugs.

Measure twice

Put the tape on the rail thickness and on the bottom of the box before you cut the bag. Xclou claims a rail up to 14 cm and a box about 10.5 × 21 cm. The no-drill clamps claim rails 1.5–32 cm thick and boxes 15–23 cm wide. The sliding 4-packs claim an 18–23 cm box and say nothing useful about rail thickness, because they expect a screw into timber, a porch rail or masonry. Bamworld claims 8.6–19.4 cm on the rail and most window boxes without centimetres. A 20 cm wooden trough on a 14 cm hook is a miss you can see with a tape. A 32 cm parapet on Xclou is the same miss. Fastigeaty’s listing tells you sizing is not from a standard chart; believe that line and measure. Count how many brackets the length needs: two points for a short plastic trough, four for a long decking box. One UK Dandelionsky text used the 4-pack on a five-foot trough. Two brackets under that length is the typical error, not a saving. ELEO Express’s UK note is still the useful habit: measure the rail, then check a clamp after it is on. Rubber pads, if the pack has them, protect a coated rail. If the rail is glass, stop here and go to the stop list below. A Juliet balcony is not a 14 cm timber cap.

Count the bag

Open the bag on a tray and count brackets, wing nuts, bolts, screws and wall plugs against the included line. Xclou brown’s set name says single while the included line lists two brackets. Generic’s bullets list hardware; one UK review still found four nuts and bolts missing. Sliding packs list steel screws, wall plugs and wing nuts. Bamworld’s UK text mentions a leaflet, bolts and thumbscrews. TSKDKIT states installation instructions. If the count is short, do not drill. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, you have 30 days from the day after delivery to reject goods that are faulty, misdescribed or unfit. Missing wing nuts sit there. A mixed-screw drawer after you have filled the box is not the same as a complete pack. Xclou’s UK file is the washer file. Buyers add penny washers the bag does not supply, and some replace wing nuts with lock nuts. Some add cable ties or a timber batten behind a fence so the hook cannot walk. That is the UK conversation on those two colours, not a lab method. Wovar’s shop page is the fastener reminder for wall work: chipboard screws into wood, a nylon plug and screw into stone or concrete. The adjustable balcony pair uses a wing nut and bolt. Match the fastener to the wall you actually have.

Dry-fit, then fill

Assemble the slide or the clamp on the empty trough first. On a hook-over pair, set the fold to the rail, hang the empty box, and see whether it sits level. On a no-drill clamp, tighten the nuts onto the rail, empty, and look for a bite that does not chew the coating off. On a sliding 4-pack, offer the brackets under the sill or along the deck rail, mark, then put one screw in each bracket before you commit the rest. Penny washers under Xclou wing nuts stop the nut burying itself in a slot. Tight enough means the empty box does not rock when you press the front edge; so tight that you round the wing is too far. UK texts on thin iron include a bend under a half-empty plastic planter (Littleduckling) and a bracket that fractured at the bend after four months (Generic). Those are reasons not to load compost until the empty box is quiet on the rail. Fill after the empty test. Wet compost is the load. Recheck every nut from the balcony side after the first rain, which is ELEO’s check as well as the UK washer file. Generic’s storm pull-out text asked for longer screws after the weather; that is a first-rain lesson, not a reason to skip the dry-fit. Hang inside the rail if people walk below. The how-to stops at the hardware. The drop path sits on the balcony page.

When to stop

Stop if the rail is glass. A clamp that bites timber does not become a glass fitting because the listing says 1.5–32 cm. Stop if the masonry crumbles around a plug; that is a wall, not a bracket, problem. Stop if you are on a first-floor drop above a street and you have not read the inside-versus-outside argument on the balcony page. Call a professional if you do not know the balcony’s load, if you want boxes outside a high rail above a pavement, or if the only rail is a glazed Juliet bar. Lechuza’s UK page tells you to follow the assembly and safety notes and quotes a pair load of 35 kg with circumference, not thickness — a different measuring job, and not one of the amazon rows. The sequence on this page still holds: measure, count, dry-fit empty, fill, retighten. The no-drill nut-fix avoids a wall hole. It does not avoid a load on the rail.

Common questions

What do I measure before I open the bag?
Rail thickness and the box-bottom width, with the tape, not from the listing photograph. Then count how many brackets the length needs. If either measurement misses the stated window, the pack is the wrong type.
How many brackets on an 80–90 cm trough?
Two points are the usual pair for a short plastic trough. Four points belong on a long wooden or decking box. An 80 cm box is often a pair; a five-foot decking planter in one UK text used a 4-pack. Match the length you own.
Do I need washers that are not in the box?
On Xclou, UK texts say yes: penny washers under the wing nuts, and sometimes lock nuts instead of the supplied wings. That is buyer practice in the review file, not a tested specification. Sliding packs and the clamps have their own nuts; still count them before you drill or tighten.
When do I add compost?
After the empty trough sits level and does not rock. Filling first hides a loose wing nut and turns a missed washer into a wet, heavy miss. Recheck after the first rain.
How tight is tight enough?
Tight enough that the empty box does not nod when you press the front. Rounding a wing nut or crushing a coated rail is too far. Recheck from the balcony side after rain, when wet compost has settled.
What if screws or wing nuts are missing?
Stop. Photograph the bag, use the 30-day right to reject under section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and do not mix in odd screws as a first fix. Generic’s UK file includes a four-nut shortfall.
Can I fit these with no drill?
TSKDKIT and Fastigeaty say no drilling; the fix is nuts on the rail. Xclou hangs. Sliding 4-packs need holes. No-drill still puts the wet box on the building. Glass rails are the stop, not a clamp job.
