Pizza oven wood pellets or heating pellets?

Updated: October 2026

Pizza oven wood pellets and heating pellets can arrive in similar 15 kg sacks, but the two jobs demand different evidence. An outdoor oven needs clean, dry fuel accepted by its manual; a domestic pellet boiler needs the specified size and a verifiable quality class, normally ENplus A1. A product title that mentions both cooking and biomass does not settle either question. Our [wood pellet comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/wood-pellet) shows the captured amazon.co.uk bags. Use this guide to decide when a cooking bag is enough and when you should move to a certified heating supplier.

When a cooking bag is enough

For an outdoor pellet pizza oven, begin with the appliance manual. Ooni says its relevant UK and European ovens can use ENplus A1 softwood pellets without fillers, while other manuals may specify hardwood. Buy pellets sold for cooking that match those instructions, then keep them dry. Do not substitute cat litter, treated wood or a bag whose composition cannot be established. The cooking products here range from £9.99 to £16.99. Munnie at £9.99 claims spruce without additives and names pizza ovens, grills and smokers, but its title says 15 kg while the item-weight field says 10 kg. Ecoblaze at £10.49 has a clear 15 kg line and claims virgin softwood without chemical additives. Its 4.3-star record includes smoke, smell and incomplete-burning complaints, so the low price comes with a reason to inspect the bag closely. A cooking bag is enough when the label and manual agree, the pellets are dry and intact, and the fire burns normally without an abnormal smell. Our how-to guide covers lighting without turning this comparison into an oven tutorial.

When you need heating fuel

A domestic pellet boiler is an automated fuel system, not a large pizza oven. The pellet's moisture, ash, dimensions and mechanical durability affect feeding, ignition, deposits and maintenance. ENplus A1 sets controlled limits and identifies certified producers or traders. A valid approved bag carries the ENplus logo, certification ID and quality class, which you can check rather than trusting “premium” in a title. The Vivo heating product costs £19.99 and says 15 kg, 6 mm and virgin softwood. Its captured listing shows no ENplus ID or boiler model list. Six millimetres in a marketplace title does not establish the full ENplus specification, and 4.2 stars from 307 reviews cannot replace certification. One review even reports cat litter arriving, which weakens confidence in using it for routine heating. Defra's boiler guidance says to burn only the fuel specified by the appliance. For a winter supply, compare certified merchants and repeat availability rather than buying isolated marketplace sacks. If the seller cannot provide the ID required by your manual or scheme, skip the bag.

Softwood is not the automatic mistake

The hardwood-versus-softwood argument is often oversimplified. Ooni moved relevant UK and European pellet ovens to ENplus A1 softwood and says hardwood pellets also work, while some other appliance manuals still demand hardwood. The difference may reflect fuel formulation and appliance design rather than a universal species hierarchy. Your manual wins. A certified A1 softwood pellet can be entirely appropriate for a boiler whose manual permits it. An uncertified hardwood pellet is not automatically safer merely because of species. Follow our wood pellet buying guide for the full bag checklist.

Smoke control is about the chimney

An outdoor pizza oven is permitted under the GOV.UK smoke-control guidance, although you should still prevent nuisance smoke and use suitable dry fuel. A stove or boiler connected to a chimney in a smoke control area is different: you generally need an authorised fuel or an exempt appliance operated with the fuel and conditions under which it was approved. A generic statement that “wood pellets” are allowed is unsafe without checking the actual appliance. Defra's lists contain specific exempt appliances and conditions. The fact that one listed stove can burn named pellets does not authorise the same fuel in every chimney appliance. Check your postcode's smoke-control status, the appliance exemption and its manual. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own administrations and rules, so use the relevant local authority guidance rather than assuming an English page settles every UK location. Indoors, smoke leakage, alarms, unusual deposits or feed faults require a competent service engineer. Do not keep experimenting with a cheap bag in a boiler or stove when the specification is uncertain.

Common questions

Can I cook on ordinary heating pellets?
Only if the oven manufacturer permits that exact type and the pellets are clean, dry and appropriately specified for food cooking. A heating label alone is not enough.
Are softwood pellets worse than hardwood?
No universal rule applies. Ooni accepts ENplus A1 softwood in relevant UK ovens, while another manual may require hardwood. Follow your appliance rather than the species slogan.
Why did cheap pellets smoke?
Damp fuel, excess fines, restricted airflow, overfeeding or the pellet batch can contribute. Stop if smoke or smell remains abnormal after following the manufacturer's lighting and airflow checks.
Is £19.99 a fair heating price?
It is a high convenience price compared with merchant channels, and the captured Vivo listing lacks an ENplus ID. Compare certified delivered supply, not shelf price alone.
What if I live in a smoke control area?
Outdoor pizza ovens are treated differently from chimney appliances. For a stove or boiler, verify the exempt appliance, authorised fuel conditions and local rules before burning pellets.
Does 6 mm in the title mean it fits my boiler?
No. It states one dimension but not moisture, ash, durability or certification. Match the complete fuel specification and a verifiable ENplus ID to the boiler manual.
Can one bag do the oven and the stove?
Only when both appliance manuals explicitly accept its documented specification. In practice, cooking and domestic heating purchases should be checked separately rather than assumed interchangeable.
