Green bathroom paint: choosing a finish for steam

Updated: October 2026

Painting a small en-suite sage green can make it feel calmer, but the finish has to cope with condensation as well as look good. For green bathroom paint, the clearest choice in this 12-paint comparison is Dulux Easycare Bathroom Soft Sheen in Guild Green: it is the only tin explicitly presented as bathroom paint. That does not make it waterproof, mould-proof or suitable inside a shower. The [main comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/wall-paint-green) covers all 12 paints; here the decision is whether paint, ventilation or damp treatment solves your bathroom problem.

Standard matt is the wrong default

Ordinary matt emulsion is a poor default for a steamy bathroom because its flat surface is generally less wipeable and the product may not include a moisture or mould-resistance claim. Crown’s Mid Green matt is directed towards living rooms and bedrooms, while the listing points kitchens and bathrooms towards silk. Johnstone's Natural Sage matt is more ambiguous. Its bullet names bathrooms, yet the listing has conflicting waterproof fields and no mould-resistance claim. For a family bathroom producing steam every morning, a bathroom-labelled coating is the more defensible starting point. See matt versus silk for green walls for the wider finish comparison.

What Dulux Easycare Guild Green actually promises

Dulux Easycare Bathroom Soft Sheen in Guild Green is the one bathroom-titled product among these 12 green paints. The 2.5-litre tin was listed at £29.98, with coverage up to 13 m² per litre and two coats recommended by Dulux. The manufacturer gives six hours between coats and says to allow 24 hours before exposing the finish to condensation. Dulux describes the formulation as moisture resistant and mould resistant, with five-year mould-protection wording on its product page. That is a manufacturer claim. The Amazon data says “Water Resistant” while the waterproof field is false, so this is not a waterproof membrane. For wider quantity and preparation decisions, use the green wall paint buying guide.

Reviews add a warning about water marks

The Guild Green listing showed 4.7 out of 5 from 98 reviews, and the available feedback names this shade rather than a mixed-colour range. Several reviewers describe the paint as thick and easy to apply, including successful use in toilets and bathrooms. However, one reviewer describes water marks after shower steam, another says the first coat can lift if worked for too long, and one mentions a strong odour. Dulux's instruction to keep the finish away from condensation for 24 hours is therefore a minimum planning point, not an invitation to shower as soon as the wall feels dry. The fuller sequence is covered in how to paint a wall green, while bathroom performance still depends on curing and ventilation.

Stop at the tile line and fix mould first

Bathroom emulsion belongs on suitable interior walls and ceilings, not in the direct-water zone inside a shower. Dulux lists Guild Green for ceilings and interior walls; it does not list tiles in the product data used here. Keep paint outside the tiled or otherwise waterproofed shower area, and never use a “water resistant” field as permission to replace tanking. Do not paint straight over black mould or a persistently wet patch. Remove mould safely, let the surface dry and address the moisture source first. Guild Green is the strongest bathroom-specific green in this set, but its protection depends on a sound, dry wall, sensible curing time and working ventilation.

Common questions

Can I use ordinary green matt in a bathroom?
Some standard matt listings mention bathrooms, including Johnstone's Natural Sage matt, but that does not make them specialist moisture systems. A well-ventilated cloakroom may be an acceptable compromise. For a steamy family bathroom, choose a bathroom-labelled finish or another coating whose manufacturer explicitly supports that use, because living-room matt may mark sooner and be harder to wipe.
What does five-year mould resistance mean?
Dulux uses five-year mould-protection wording for Easycare Bathroom Soft Sheen. It is a manufacturer claim under its application and use conditions, not a promise that mould cannot appear. Paint cannot stop condensation, repair a leak or dry a damp wall. Preparation, ventilation and avoiding constant water contact still determine whether the finish remains sound.
Why might bathroom paint show water marks?
Guild Green reviews include positive bathroom use and a report of marks after shower steam. Condensation can mark a coating that has not cured or stays wet repeatedly. Dulux says to wait 24 hours before exposing it to condensation. Allow that time, ventilate the room and do not interpret moisture resistance as waterproofing.
Is silk enough without a bathroom label?
Silk is generally more wipeable than ordinary matt, and Crown points bathroom buyers from matt towards silk. However, sheen alone does not establish mould resistance or repeated-steam suitability. Johnstone's Natural Sage silk has bathroom feedback but no mould claim in the specification used here. It is a compromise for a ventilated room, not an equivalent claim to a bathroom formulation.
Can I use green bathroom emulsion inside the shower?
No paint here should be treated as shower tanking. Dulux lists Guild Green for interior walls and ceilings, not tiles, and its Amazon fields distinguish water resistance from waterproofing. Use an appropriate waterproof wall system where shower water hits directly. Follow that system's instructions or use a qualified installer.
Should I paint over black mould?
No. Clean and treat the mould safely, dry the wall and correct the moisture source before decorating. Mould-resistant paint does not cure failed extraction, cold bridging or leaks. If mould returns quickly, the wall stays damp, or plaster is soft and blistered, pause the decorating and obtain professional advice.
