Matt vs silk emulsion

Updated: October 2026

You want a flat wall in a UK hallway, and someone has told you silk is simply the tougher emulsion. Matt stays flat and hides small lumps. Silk has a mid-sheen, wipes more easily, and shows the plaster. Every listing in our [emulsion paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/emulsion-paint) is a matt. Silk is not in that file, and neither is a scrubbable matt with a stated class. This page follows Dulux's finish guide, The Paint Shed's matt-versus-silk note, and the waterproof fields read on 19 October 2026. We did not scrub a test panel. Two emulsions, two jobs

Dulux's finish guide describes matt as velvety, the sheen that hides small imperfections, and silk as a mid-sheen that wipes more readily and shows lumps. A ceiling or a bedroom you will not wipe is the matt job. A wall you wipe with a damp cloth is the silk job, and a badly filled crack will catch the light. Vinyl on the Johnstone's and Crown matt tins does not mean the film is washable. On every full-size tin, is waterproof is false. Natural Sage's other water field says waterproof while the boolean still says false. The Paintsmiths 30 ml bottle is the only waterproof-true product here, and it is a touch-up, not a silk. The Paint Shed calls vinyl matt washable. The fields on these listings are the tighter reading, and they do not support a scrub.

Sheen, the roller, and the VOC band

Dulux pairs a medium-pile sheepskin with matt and a shorter pile with silk, which the how to apply emulsion paint page covers if you stay with matt. Under the 2012 VOC regulations, interior matt sits in the 30 g/l band when gloss is at or below 25 at 60 degrees, and a glossier interior wall paint sits at 100 g/l. A silk can fall in that higher band. Check the label. None of these eight matt extracts prints a gram figure.

Ceilings and quiet rooms

For a ceiling, stay with matt. Silk shows every joint, every over-rolled filler, and the arc of the roller once window light hits it. The same is true of a bedroom wall you will not wipe. Choose among the eight by litres, not by a hope that one of them is secretly a silk. A flat finish hides uneven plaster better than silk would. It does not add a scrub class. Class 1, on the public explanation of that standard, is under 5 micrometres of film loss after 200 scrub cycles, and we are not assigning that class here. A child's bedroom is the awkward middle. Johnstone's Magnolia reviewers mention paint that washes off if you catch a mark quickly. Weekly cleaning is a product sold for wiping.

Hallways you will wipe

Choose silk, or a scrubbable matt, when the hallway, the stairs, or the family room will be wiped. Fill and sand before you change sheen, or the mid-sheen will draw a line under every bump the old matt was hiding. Crown's easyclean Matt is sold as wipe-clean for busy rooms, with Crown's own line that it is about 200 times tougher than standard emulsion. That multiple is Crown's claim. It is not a test we ran, and that tin is not one of the eight ASINs. Do not expect Manhattan Grey or the Crown brilliant whites in this file to perform as that product because the brand name matches. A shower room is not a silk hallway. That is the emulsion paint for a bathroom page. For a dry hallway you will wipe, leave these eight matt tins and buy silk or a stated scrubbable matt. Stay with them when you want the flat look and you will not scrub.

Common questions

Is silk tougher than matt?
Silk is the mid-sheen Dulux describes as easier to wipe, and matt is the flat finish that hides bumps. Tougher on a decorator's shelf usually means a published scrub claim, which neither a standard matt nor a standard silk has to carry. These eight listings are all matt, and none prints a scrub class.
Will silk show the plaster?
Yes. Dulux's finish guide says silk shows lumps and bumps that matt hides. A filled crack, a roller ridge, or a board joint will catch the light. Fill and sand first, and look at the wall in daylight before you commit the whole run.
Can I wipe these matt tins?
You can lift a fresh splash if you are quick, and some Magnolia reviewers say the paint washes off when they catch it early. You should not plan on scrubbing them. Waterproof is false on every full-size tin. Weekly cleaning along a hallway will mark a standard matt.
What is a scrubbable matt if I still want a flat wall?
It is a matt sold for wiping, sometimes with an EN 13300 class. Crown's easyclean Matt is one UK example, and it is not in this amazon.co.uk set. The 200 times tougher line is Crown's claim, not our measurement. None of the eight listings states Class 1.
Which sheen for a ceiling?
Use matt on a ceiling. Silk will show joints, filler, and roller marks once the light hits them. A 2.5 litre tin is a small ceiling. A 7 or 10 litre white is the pack when several ceilings share one colour. The sheen does not change the band of about 10–14 m² per litre per coat.
Is vinyl matt the same as vinyl silk?
Both can be vinyl emulsions, and the sheen is the difference you live with. Vinyl matt in this file is the flat paint with waterproof set to false. Vinyl silk is a mid-sheen from a different listing. None of these eight prints an EN 13300 scrub class. The 30 ml Paintsmiths bottle is waterproof true and still only a touch-up.
