How to use a paint roller

Updated: 17 October 2026

The stripes are usually in the sleeve, not in the tin. This is how to use a paint roller on a UK wall in water-based emulsion: rinse, cut in a small section, fill the tray about one third, then lay off before the wet edge sets. This follows Dulux and the checklist in our [paint roller](/hub/painting-supplies/paint-roller) comparison, on 16 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If the pile was wrong for the wall, that choice sits in the [paint roller buying guide](/hub/painting-supplies/paint-roller/sub/paint-roller-buying-guide), not in a harder press.

Rinse and cut in first

Wash a new sleeve before it sees paint. Dulux's preparation page says warm soapy water to lift loose fluff. The Fit for the Job five-piece bullet is more specific: rinse in cold or tepid water and let the sleeve dry. Reviews in this comparison still mention fluff on Harris, Hamilton and Fit for the Job sleeves, so the rinse is the first step, not a guarantee. Cut in with a brush, or with a 4 inch sleeve, along the ceiling line, the skirting and the frames. Dulux Trade says not to cut in the whole room first. Do a section you can roll while the edge is still wet, about a metre each way. A 9 inch sleeve does not reach a clean line in the corner.

Load the sleeve

Pour until the tray is about one third full. The Warwick decorating leaflet uses that fraction: roll down into the paint and back up the slope until the sleeve is even and it has stopped dripping. A full tray dumps paint on the floor the first time the frame knocks the rim. If the tray is the flimsy one reviewers mention on the £5.95 Fit for the Job set, keep it on a flat board. Load until the pile looks evenly wet, not until it slings droplets. Work the paint into the pile on the slope, not by dunking and hoping. Turn the sleeve so the dry side picks up paint, then roll again until both sides match. If it still rains when you lift it, you are over the one-third line or you skipped the slope. Dulux links foam to orange peel in ordinary emulsion.

Roll and lay off

Pick a patch about a metre square. Dulux Trade describes a W across that patch, then an M to fill the gaps. When the patch is covered, lay off with light pressure in one direction, while the paint is still open. Laying off knocks the ridges down. Keep a wet edge. Overlap the last patch while it is still shiny, then lay off across the join. On a ceiling, the same metre and the same wet edge apply. Height, ladders and whether 122 cm is enough are on the paint roller extension pole page. If the ceiling is heavy Artex and the wall is smooth, change sleeve rather than forcing one pile to do both, which is the point of the walls and ceilings page.

Fibres, washing, and when to stop

If fluff is already in the wet paint, pick the loose bits off before they dry, then look at the sleeve. In this folder the Fit for the Job seven-piece extract includes a sleeve that walks sideways and a metal arm that bent. Wash an emulsion sleeve in warm water until the water runs clear. Solvent-based paint is not the same sequence. HSE's sheet OCE2 covers solvent-based brush and roller work: ventilate, and do not treat a mist as harmless. It does not apply to water-based emulsion. For two-pack epoxy or isocyanate, stop and read the safety data. Call a decorator if the session is a long one over a stair, if the coating is a two-pack floor system, or if you suspect asbestos in an old textured coating.

Common questions

How much paint goes in the tray?
About one third of the tray, then roll the sleeve on the slope until it stops dripping. The Warwick leaflet uses that fill so the sleeve is even rather than soaked. A brimful tray is how paint leaves the rim and runs down the frame. If your tray is thin plastic, keep it on a flat surface so it does not fold when you load.
Do I cut in the whole room first?
No. Dulux Trade says to cut in a section you can roll while it is wet, about a metre square, not every edge in the room. A dried cut-in flashes darker than the rolled field. Use a brush or a 4 inch sleeve for the ceiling line, the skirting and the frames. The 9 inch sleeve does not make that line.
What is laying off?
Laying off is the last light pass in one direction, after the patch is already covered. It knocks down the ridges from the W. Dulux Trade describes that pass with light pressure, keeping a wet edge. Pressing harder forces paint out at the sides and does not hide a dry sleeve. Do it before the edge of the patch goes matt.
Why is fluff sticking in the wet paint?
Loose fibre was still in the pile, or the sleeve is shedding in use. Dulux says to wash a new roller before you paint, and the Fit for the Job bullet says a cold or tepid rinse. Pick bits out of the wet film, then wash the sleeve. If it keeps shedding after that, the pile is the problem, not the pressure of your hand.
When should I stop and call a decorator?
Stop if you would be on a ladder over a stair for a long session, if the coating is two-pack epoxy or isocyanate, or if you suspect asbestos in an old textured coating. A roller will not make those jobs safe. Also stop if a proper test patch still looks wrong after you have rinsed, loaded and laid off. The next change is the pile, not another litre of the same paint.
