Hose spray gun connector UK: water-stop and clicks

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have clicked a new metal spray gun onto the hose and either nothing comes out or the join weeps. That usually means the male on the gun is not the male your click fitting was built to accept, especially on a water-stop. This page is the hose spray gun connector UK check: read the inlet the amazon.co.uk listing actually prints, then test it against the connector you already own. A water-stop that never opens is the wrong male, not a weak tap. Peter F. used those listings and Hozelock's notes, not a lab test. Three things people call the fitting

People use one word for three parts that do not share a thread. The outside tap, the hose bore, and the click on the end of the hose are separate. Mincost's guide describes most of the hoses it covers as 13 mm hose with click connectors, and it treats the usual outside-tap thread as 3/4 inch BSP. Hozelock sizes 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch BSP taps at about 21 mm and 26.5 mm. That measurement belongs to the bib tap. A 13 mm hose is the internal diameter, not the click on the end. Picture a 3/4 inch BSP tap, a 13 mm hose, and a water-stop already on that hose. The new gun's title says 3/4 inch. All three figures can seem to agree, and the gun can still refuse the water-stop. The click is where these guns fail.

Why a water-stop stays shut

A water-stop is a connector with a valve inside. Hozelock's AquaStop page describes that valve as shutting when the accessory comes off, so the hose does not empty onto the path. Their FAQ says no water comes out if nothing is attached. The gun needs a male that travels far enough to push the valve open. A wrong profile can be pushed for a minute while the valve stays shut. That is a fitting fault, not low mains pressure. FASBET is printed as 3/4 inch FNPT, and reviews say it fails a Hozelock water-stop. Ibergrif is printed as 3/4 inch G or a quick connector, and the reviews disagree. A 3/4 inch claim is weak evidence the female will accept the male. When the click is fully home and water still weeps, fit a fresh washer or O-ring. Hozelock treats that seal as the leak fix.

What the listing actually prints

Amazon.co.uk titles reuse words that are not interchangeable. G and BSPP sit near British pipe thread, while FNPT and a bare tum do not. GHT is a third system: a non-UK table puts 3/4 inch GHT at about 11.5 threads per inch and 3/4 inch BSP at 14. Treat BSP as the tap thread a UK outside tap is likely to use. Forcing a GHT male onto that female strips the crests. Pulix states 3/4 inch G and a quick connector that reviews often call Hozelock-type. YMTEEDIO's 1/2 or 3/4 inch BSPP is closer to a UK tap than to GHT. Draper's title says universal while the details say a 1/2 inch barb. FANHAO's 3/4 tum is an untranslated size field. Onarway's 1/2 inch quick-connect will not seat in a connector made for a 3/4 inch hose end.

Adapter, washer, or a different gun

Decide from the failure you can see. If the click is fully home and the join drips, fit a fresh washer or O-ring. If the water-stop never opens, as with the FASBET reviews on an FNPT inlet, stop twisting before you strip a crest. Buy an adapter only when you can name both ends. Only Pulix's components line names a quick connector, and one reviewer said it was missing. Draper's 1/2 inch barb is a poor swap on a reel that already ends in a Hozelock-type water-stop. Onarway's 1/2 inch quick-connect fails the same way in a 3/4 inch hose-end connector. Water Regs UK treats a double check valve as protection on a hose-union tap. Ask a plumber if you cannot tell 1/2 inch BSP from 3/4 inch BSP. Once the inlet matches, weigh the trigger on the metal garden hose spray gun buying guide, run the gun on the how to use a hose spray gun page, and read a split body on the metal versus plastic hose spray gun page.

Common questions

What thread is a UK garden hose?
A UK garden hose is usually named by its bore, not by the gun. Mincost's guide treats most hoses it covers as 13 mm tube with click connectors. The outside tap is commonly 3/4 inch BSP (about 26.5 mm) or 1/2 inch BSP (about 21 mm). The click on the hose end is a separate part.
What is a water-stop, and why is there no flow?
A water-stop is a connector whose valve shuts when the accessory is off, so the hose does not drain onto the path. Hozelock's AquaStop is built that way. The gun must click fully on and push the valve open. No flow means that push has not happened.
Is garden hose thread the same as BSP?
Garden hose thread, often called GHT, is a different thread from BSP. A non-UK table puts 3/4 inch GHT at about 11.5 threads per inch and 3/4 inch BSP at 14. The crests do not mate. A GHT male forced onto a UK 3/4 inch BSP tap will cross-thread.
What does FNPT or 3/4 tum mean on a UK listing?
FNPT on a UK listing is a US female pipe thread, separate from 3/4 inch BSP. FASBET prints both 3/4 inch and FNPT, and reviews say that inlet fails a Hozelock water-stop. FANHAO's 3/4 tum is an untranslated size field. Neither phrase proves the male will click onto the connector you already own.
Does the outside tap need a check valve as well as a connector?
Yes. Water Regs UK treats a double check valve as protection fitted at a hose-union tap, so the hose cannot draw supply water backwards. That valve sits with the tap. It is separate from the click connector and from the spray gun. If you cannot see it, ask a plumber.
