Dried paint on a brush

Updated: 21 October 2026

You finished the skirting on Saturday, left the gloss brush in a jam jar, and by Monday the bristles will not flex. Dried paint on those tips is no longer the wash you do while gloss is wet. This page separates paint that has only just set from paint that has been hard for days. The six amazon.co.uk listings are on the [brush cleaner comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/brush-cleaner). We did not soak brushes in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Slightly dried is not the same as hard for days

Paint that has only just gone tacky is still close to a wet-paint job. X ARTY HUB, listing B0H6JS7MBD, gives a soak of four to six hours for slightly dried water-based paint. It does not cover oil paint, and it does not cover paint that has fully hardened. That soak is the wrong plan if the bristles have been rigid since last weekend. The British Coatings Federation describes warm water, not boiling, then a cleaner suited to the paint, then a comb and a reshaped tip. Boiling water loosens ferrule glue. If the brush is still soft enough to wash, the order of work sits on how to use a brush cleaner.

What these six listings will say about dry paint

Masters, listing B0009RRT9Y, is the one whose bullets mention wet paint and dry paint. That is wider than a wet-only label, and it is not evidence that every hard brush recovers. Across 50 review texts, some buyers revived stiff brushes and some said badly neglected brushes did not fully recover. Winsor & Newton UK say dried acrylic is no longer soluble in water and sets into a plastic-like film. An overnight soak is advice, not a guarantee. Rustins, listing B0058G1AXC, will not share that claim. The 2024 label says the cleaner is only for wet paint, and that hard brushes need Rustins Brush Restorer. The restorer is a separate product: the maker’s page shows 300 ml at £6.00, and it is not an ASIN here. It is highly flammable. Golden Maple does not split wet paint from hard paint. Four ratings do not make renewal a rule. Polycell asks whether dried paint will shift and does not answer. Bartoline is a thinner: one review said nearly three bottles left old brushes unchanged. Who should buy which bottle while paint is still wet is on best brush cleaner.

Restore once, or replace

Another bottle helps only when the bristles can still move and the ferrule still holds them. Bromleys and Winsor & Newton warn that a long soak rots the glue and the bristles drop out. Work the heel, and do not stand the whole handle in solvent for days. A 50 mm gloss brush left in white spirit up to the handle over a weekend often stays splayed, with bristles coming away in the comb. That brush is finished. Choose a restorer when the paint has been hard for a long time and the ferrule is still sound. Keep it in glass or metal, cover the pot, and keep it off Perspex, lino, rubber and plastic. If the tip has split into a fan you cannot reshape, or bristles fall out when you flex them, replace the brush.

The next brush, while the paint is still wet

Matching a cleaner to paint that is still wet is the job of the brush cleaner buying guide. The comparison is where you pick that cleaner, so the next brush does not end up stiff in the jam jar.

Common questions

Will Polycell or Rustins brush cleaner save a rock-hard brush?
Rustins brush cleaner will not. The 2024 label on B0058G1AXC says it is only for wet paint and points hard brushes to Rustins Brush Restorer, which is not one of the six ASINs here. Polycell’s listing asks whether it can remove dried paint and does not answer. Bristles rigid for days need a restorer or a new brush. Paint that has only just set is a different case.
How long can I soak the X ARTY HUB liquid?
X ARTY HUB, listing B0H6JS7MBD, states a soak of four to six hours for slightly dried water-based paint. It is not for oil paint, and it is not for paint that has fully hardened. Seven ratings means the time is the maker’s instruction rather than a large set of UK reviews. Past six hours, or with liquid sitting in the ferrule, you are outside what the listing describes.
When should I buy a restorer instead?
Buy a restorer when the paint has been hard for a long time and the ferrule is still sound. Rustins Brush Restorer is what the 2024 cleaner label names, and it is not in this set of six. The maker’s page shows 300 ml at £6.00. Use glass or metal, keep the pot covered, then rinse with water. It is highly flammable and not for Perspex, lino, rubber or plastic.
When is the brush finished and due for replacement?
Replace the brush when the tip stays splayed, or when bristles fall out as you flex them. Bromleys and Winsor & Newton warn that a long soak rots ferrule glue, so a handle left in solvent for days can finish a brush the paint had not. A wet-paint cleaner will not glue those bristles back.
Can I soak the whole handle?
Clean the heel and keep a long soak off the ferrule. Bromleys and Winsor & Newton warn that the glue rots and the bristles drop. Dried acrylic should not sit so water stays in the ferrule once it has formed a plastic-like film. Stop when the listing’s time is up, such as four to six hours for X ARTY HUB.
