Wooden basket for kindling

Updated: 2026-10-16

You are lighting the stove with one hand on the logs and the other hunting for sticks that have slid under them. A wooden basket for kindling is a second, smaller holder, not the crate that carries the evening's wood. The sticks need to be easy to lift while you are already holding logs. The [wooden basket comparison](/hub/outdoor-fire-pits/wooden-basket) includes a 27 cm crate and a set of baskets about 12.5 cm long. Only one of those is in the right size band, and neither is sold as a lined kindling basket. We compared shop sizes and the amazon.co.uk listings on 16 October 2026. A second container

Kindling mixed under the logs is awkward when you need it, and it puts more fuel in one pile beside the fire. HETAS still wants that pile off the hearth. The indoor supply is about two days, which the log storage page covers. This page only splits the sticks out of that supply. Shops do not agree on what a kindling basket means. Bowley & Jackson's Oakham is willow with a hessian liner and a rope handle, 450 × 410 × 360 mm, at £55, and the description also talks about a night's logs. Glowing Embers lists a holder at 305 × 200 × 130 mm for shorter kindling, at £15.30. The Log Shed's hessian-lined baskets start at 26 cm. Those are shop products, not the listings we kept. Chester & Cooke's maker's list, not a British Standard, asks for sticks for three or four fires and a one-handed handle.

What small means for sticks

A hessian kindling basket often starts around 26 cm, as at The Log Shed, and a short-stick holder can be about 13 cm high. The heart crate is about 27 × 17 × 14 cm outside, near that small hessian size and far below the 45 cm Oakham. A 25 cm lighting stick may fit on the outside measurement. The inside is smaller, and the listing does not print it. A one-handed carry is the other half of the job. The Oakham listing states a rope handle. The heart crate has heart-shaped cut-outs, not a rope. The mini set lists the handle material as wood and does not state the shape. If the holder needs two hands, it is too much for a kindling carry. None of the six listings states a hessian liner. An open crate will shed bark, and a homemade liner does not turn the listing into a lined product.

The kept listings

The Wickerfield heart crate is £6.29, wood, not water resistant, 4.6 from 707 reviews. One reviewer said the small size suited kindling. Other reviews are gift hampers and thin wood with pins that work loose. Take that comment as one person's use of a hamper crate, not as proof it is a kindling basket. The number-of-items field says 3 and the unit count says 1. The small oval crate is about 31.5 cm long in the bullet, 400 g, at £7.99. That length is in a kindling range if the material were clear. The bullets say natural wood and the specification says artificial wicker, and the written reviews are shared with the large oval. It is a possible light stick box only if you accept that conflict and you are not carrying it full. The Nudaoz set is six untreated baskets about 12.5 cm long, at £21.99. That is below a 25 cm stick. The listing is 5.0 from one review and has no review text. Six of them do not add up to a kindling crate.

What to skip

Skip the Yaheetech hamper, a painted-MDF laundry bin at £39.99 with a hinged lid. Skip the large oval if you only wanted sticks: at about 41.5 cm it is closer to a small log crate, and its reviews are not a separate test of that size. Skip the paw crate for kindling. It is about 41 cm long and the review sample is pets. If you want a hessian-lined basket around 26–32 cm with a one-handed handle, leave this set. Who each listing is for sits on the best wooden basket page. Keep the kindling holder off the hearth, the same as the logs.

Common questions

Why not keep the sticks under the logs?
You cannot reach them one-handed when you are already holding the logs, and you pile more fuel in one place. A second holder keeps a few lightings separate. HETAS still limits the indoor supply to about two days, off the hearth.
Is a 27 cm crate big enough for kindling?
The heart crate is about 27 cm long outside, near shop kindling baskets that start around 26 cm. A 25 cm stick may be tight, and no internal length is printed. One reviewer called that size suitable. That is one comment, not a capacity.
Is the 12.5 cm set a kindling basket?
No. The Nudaoz baskets are about 12.5 cm long, sold for craft and jewellery, at £21.99 for six. There is no review text behind the 5.0 from one review. A lighting stick around 25 cm will not lie in one.
Can I carry it with one hand?
That is the practical test. A maker's checklist asks for a handle you can use while the other hand carries logs. The heart crate has cut-outs, not a rope handle, and reviewers call the wood thin. If a full crate needs two hands, it is too much kindling for that box.
Do I need a liner for bark and splinters?
Shop kindling baskets often include a hessian liner so bark stays off the floor. None of the kept listings states a liner. An open crate will shed bits. Adding your own cloth does not change the product description.
Does a kindling crate belong on the hearth?
No. Kindling is dry and catches readily. HETAS says combustibles stay off the hearth and off the appliance. If the only place it fits is inside the stove's stated clearance, ask a fitter.
