How to use a fire bowl

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have the bowl, a bag of wood, and a patio that still looks tidy. How to use a fire bowl, in this set, means lighting a small fire with the fuel the listing names, staying with it, and letting it die down. None of these amazon.co.uk listings is shown as a Defra-exempt stove. These steps come from public UK guidance and the review notes on the [Blumfeldt fire bowl comparison](/hub/outdoor-fire-pits/blumfeldt-fire-bowl), not from a lab fire, on 20 October 2026. Use the fuel the listing names, then dry wood

Start with the fuel line on the bowl you actually bought. Several listings say wood. The Harbour bullets also say charcoal. The Fireball says charcoal or logs. The Merano fuel line says firewood, and the page asks about charcoal without answering. If charcoal is not named, do not treat a bag of briquettes as an unstated extra. In England, wood sold under 2 cubic metres for domestic burning must be Ready to Burn, at or below 20% moisture. That certifies the fuel, not the bowl, and it is not a Defra exemption. Wet logs are the wrong sack. GOV.UK bonfire guidance says you must not burn household waste if the smoke will pollute or harm someone’s health. What to check before you buy is the fire bowl buying guide.

Light a small fire and stay with it

Build a small fire. Kindling and a natural firelighter are enough to start dry wood. Do not use petrol, paraffin, or another accelerant. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue say the same: no petrol, a steady base, water or sand nearby, and never leave the fire unattended. That is a fire service’s advice. It is not a national clearance distance. Keep sand or water within reach before you strike a match, and stay outside with the fire. If smoke is already crossing a neighbour’s windows or a road, stop. A maker guide that prints 2 metres is that brand’s instruction, not a line on the GOV.UK bonfire page. Decking, sheds, and fences are the surfaces the Welsh service says to avoid. Where the bowl sits is fire pit on patio sparks.

Tend the bowl you actually bought

Not every bowl has a grate or air from underneath. One Heat review says the fire is hard to start because there is no air from below. A tall pile of wood will not invent a draught. The Nicoman 70 cm review says that bowl is too low to use as a fire pit, so a chair circle may put cushions closer to the flame than you planned. The Fireball turns on a pin. Reviews say you tilt it when it is cold, not while a fire is burning. Set the angle before you light. On a grill, set the Fire Globe height before the cable arm is too hot to touch, and do not load charcoal onto a Savage plate that does not match the photo. The Merano fuel line is firewood. Do not answer the unanswered charcoal question on a 30 kg table.

Let it die down, then the ash

Let the fire burn down while you are still outside. Do not tip the bowl over, and do not carry it indoors. Ash can stay hot long after the flames have gone. One maker’s guide says to leave ash for 24–48 hours and not to use water. Another says a little water only if you must, because a sudden drop in temperature can damage the bowl. Those are two makers’ instructions, not a test of the Esschert or the Harbour. Sand is the quieter way to smother a small escape. If the fire spreads to a fence, a deck, or a shed, leave it and call 999. Cold ash can go out with the rubbish only once you are sure it is cold.

Common questions

What wood can you burn in a fire bowl in England?
Use dry wood sold for domestic burning. In England, wood sold under 2 cubic metres must be Ready to Burn and at or below 20% moisture. That certifies the sack, not the bowl. If the listing also names charcoal, you can use that. If it does not, stick to the fuel it names. Wet logs and treated timber are a poor idea on an open bowl.
Can you tilt the Fireball while it is burning?
No. Set the Blumfeldt Fireball horizontal or diagonal while it is cold. Reviews say it turns on a pin and that the tilt is not for a fire that is already lit. At 10 kg, plus the fuel, tipping a burning bowl is a spill. Wait until the fire is out and the steel has cooled.
How do you put the fire out?
Stay with it and let it die down in the bowl. Use sand on a small escape. One maker’s guide says not to use water on the bowl. Another says a little water only if you must, because a sudden temperature drop can damage the metal. If you go to bed, the fire should already be out. Hot ash can wait until the next day.
Can you burn garden waste or old fence panels?
Do not use the bowl as a bonfire bin. GOV.UK says you must not burn household waste where the smoke will pollute or harm health, and smoke across a road can mean a fine. A council can issue an abatement notice for nuisance smoke. Ready to Burn wood, or the charcoal the listing names, is the fuel.
What do you do if the fire reaches a fence, deck, or shed?
Call 999. A fire that has left the bowl and reached a fence, deck, or shed is a fire-service call. Get people away from the structure. Do not go back for the poker or the cover. The steps on this page are for a fire that stays in the bowl.
