How to clean a rubber apron

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have just finished the sink, the film is smeared with grease, and the washing machine is the obvious next step. How to clean a rubber apron, when the apron is PVC or vinyl, is a wipe, a rinse, and a hang. Heat, a sharp fold, and a borrowed 40°C label are how these films crack or stay sticky. The [rubber apron comparison](/hub/occupational-safety/rubber-apron) is where the listings and prices sit. The Products Compared editorial team used the care lines in those captures and public UK notes. We did not run a wash test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Use the care line on your listing

Only two captures print a care line you can follow without guessing. Gotega, the two-pack at £15.99, says wipe with a soapy washcloth, rinse with a damp cloth, and air dry, and do not machine wash. That sentence is about Gotega’s PVC bibs. It is not cancelled by a shop that wash-labels some other PVC apron at 40°C. SHEOMERN, at £35.29, says wipe with a wet towel, rinse, and hang to dry. Machine wash is asked and not supported. Do not upgrade it to a 30°C cycle because a different Portwest apron is labelled 30°C, or because one retailer FAQ said 60°C against that spec. CHAMSUREUK has no care block. Baanfly, the Nanxson rows, and Homsolver do not print one either. When the details are silent, wipe, rinse, and hang. Do not invent a temperature.

Wipe, rinse, and hang

Do the clean at the end of the task, while the grease is still soft. Wipe with a mild soapy cloth, including the ties. Rinse until the cloth comes away without a slick. Hang the bib by the neck strap so water leaves the hem. A radiator, a tumble dryer, and a sunny windowsill are the wrong place to speed that up. Easy Equipment’s note for a Whites catering bib, not one of these ASINs, is the same shape: damp soapy cloth, hang, do not fold it wet, do not machine wash. A Whites A590 is listed as machine washable at 40°C by some shops and as never machine-wash by Easy Equipment. You cannot average those labels onto Gotega. HSE’s S102 guidance says follow the maker’s instructions. Bleach, solvent, and a scouring pad are not mild soap.

Smell, heat, and folds

Two of five UK reviews on the Nanxson H-back mention a plastic or rubber smell, and one said it still filled the room after a week. On Gotega, one pair was described as unusable because of the smell. Hang the bib in moving air, off your clothes. Do not bake the smell out on a radiator. Heat is how PVC turns brittle, which is general film behaviour, not a test we ran on these ten ASINs. A sharp crease, left while the film is warm or still damp, is a crack waiting for the next shift. Roll the bib loosely, or hang it, once it is dry. Lanfly reviews that say fold are describing what people did. A drawer under the oven is both a fold and a heat source.

When the splash is not dish water

Dish water, mud from a dog bath, and patio dirt stay on this wipe. Oven cleaner and corrosives do not. After a greasy pot-wash week, the same wipe still applies, and peel that has already started will not wipe back into a sound film.

Common questions

Can I put this apron in the washing machine?
Not if it is the Gotega two-pack. That care line says do not machine wash. SHEOMERN’s line is wipe, rinse, and hang, and the listing does not grant a machine cycle. If your capture has no care line, do not borrow 30°C or 40°C from a Portwest or Whites page.
What if the listing has no care line?
Wipe with mild soap, rinse, and hang until dry. That is the pattern Gotega and SHEOMERN print, and it is the pattern to use when Baanfly, Homsolver, or a Nanxson row says nothing. CHAMSUREUK only has a review that mentions a tissue. A review is not a wash temperature.
How do I get a plastic smell out?
Hang it in moving air, away from clothes and bedding, and give it longer than an afternoon. UK notes include a Nanxson H-back that still smelled after a week, and a Gotega pair a buyer would not use. Airing is the step those reviews describe.
Should I fold it in a drawer?
Hang it, or roll it loosely once it is dry. Easy Equipment tells buyers not to fold a catering PVC bib while it is wet. Sharp folds and heat are widely described as the way PVC film cracks. A drawer next to an oven is a warm fold. Lanfly reviews that mention folding are not a care instruction from the listing.
Will sunlight or a radiator crack it?
Treat direct sun and radiator heat as things to avoid. Film-care notes say heat makes PVC brittle and strong sun is a poor drying spot. That is general advice for this kind of bib, not a laboratory result for these ASINs. Dry the apron at room temperature, off the window ledge. A wet hem on a hot rail is the habit that shortens the film.
What if the apron was splashed with a chemical, not dish water?
Do not wash it in the kitchen sink as if it were plates. HSE S102 says not to launder chemically contaminated PPE at home. The ten listings here do not state a breakthrough time or an EN 14605 mark, so you also cannot look up how long that film was rated. Use the assessment for the substance, and keep this wipe routine for water, grease, and ordinary dirt.
