Leather work gloves buying guide

Updated: 16 October 2026

An amazon.co.uk title can promise roses, welding, and a chainsaw on one leather pair. A leather work gloves buying guide has to start with the job, because that pile-up is the usual trap. This page is the order of checks. The [leather work gloves comparison](/hub/occupational-safety/leather-work-gloves) holds the twelve cards, with shelf prices from about £5.49 to £27.99 in the capture of 15 October 2026. Start with the hazard, not the title

Name what will hurt your hand before you read heavy duty. In this capture the jobs are thorns and nettles, cold driving and straps, ordinary handling, welding, and chainsaw work. DIY Doctor at £8.49 is the only lengthened gauntlet. LLB at £8.49 is fleece-lined, and UK lorry reviews talk about straps. WZQH at £9.99 ranks in Welding Gloves and mentions a chainsaw. The Health and Safety Executive says gloves come after other controls and have to match the hazard.

Leather, cuff, and lining in this price band

Full grain is the outer hide left intact. Split is the layer left once that grain is removed. ITC at £8.99, both WFX rows at £6.79, and WZQH at £9.99 say split cowhide. The £16.99 toolant says full-grain cowhide. The £19.99 toolant says full-grain leather and states 100 g Thinsulate, on an open cuff. Vgo at £27.99 says pig leather, with a stated 2.9 mm neoprene pad. EKON at £5.49 is unlined cowhide with an open cuff. The entry band is about £5.49 to £8.99. The middle is Escort at £9.98 and WZQH. The higher prices are the two toolant gloves and Vgo. Fleece on LLB is warmth on leather that still gets wet.

What a printed standard changes

A current EN 388 marking carries levels for abrasion, cut, tear, and puncture, plus a letter for the straight-blade cut test. Cut-resistant on a bullet is only a sentence. LLB says the gloves conform to EN 388 and prints no digits. Vgo mentions abrasion level 2 under 1,200 circles and leaves the rest of the code off. Nobody prints an EN 12477 welding type or an EN ISO 11393 chainsaw class. If an employer still needs PPE after other controls, the Health and Safety Executive expects the matching standard. A home gardener can still use an uncoded gauntlet for roses. Great Britain accepts UKCA or CE. Northern Ireland uses CE or CE and UKNI.

Water, dye, and machinery

Several cards disagree about water. WFX, DIY Doctor, the £16.99 toolant, and LLB each carry conflicting water fields. EKON, Escort, and the ITC rows say they are not waterproof. UK reviews add dye on sweaty hands and gloves that get wet and dry slowly. Leave gloves off at an unguarded bench drill, because the glove can catch and pull your hand into the drill bit. Oil or solvent needs EN 374, and none of these leather cards is that route.

Which page to open next

Gardeners choosing between a wrist glove and a long cuff should read thorn proof leather gardening gloves. Drivers who need warmth for straps should use the winter-driving page. If you want one pair assigned to a job, with a clear skip, the best-leather page does that inside these twelve cards. Letter sizes do not share one chart. Measure your dominant hand before you trust Large.

Common questions

What should I check first on a leather work glove?
Check the hazard, then the cuff, then whether a standard is printed. A thorn job wants leather where the cane hits. A cold cab wants a lining you can still buckle a strap in. Welding wants an EN 12477 type, and a chainsaw wants an EN ISO 11393 class. In this set those two codes are absent.
Is split cowhide worse than full grain?
They are different cuts, and on these cards they are different prices. Split cowhide is what ITC, WFX, and WZQH print, from £6.79 to £9.99. Full grain is what the toolant gloves print, at £16.99 and £19.99. The cut of the hide does not add an EN 388 code.
Does cut-resistant mean EN 388?
It means the seller typed the words. EN 388 is a code with levels. LLB says the gloves conform to EN 388 and prints no digits. Vgo mentions abrasion level 2 under 1,200 circles and stops there. You cannot quote a level the card never printed.
Can I weld or use a chainsaw in these gloves?
The listings do not show that you can. WZQH ranks in Welding Gloves and mentions chainsaws, MIG, TIG, and stoves. ITC mentions welding. Neither card prints EN 12477 type A or type B, or an EN ISO 11393 class. A browse rank is a shop placement. For those two jobs, buy a glove that states the type or the class.
Are they waterproof if one line says so?
Only when the card agrees with itself. WFX, DIY Doctor, the £16.99 toolant, and LLB each carry water fields that conflict. EKON, Escort, and ITC say they are not waterproof. LLB reviewers say the gloves get wet and dry slowly. Treat a single waterproof toggle as a cell to check, not as a membrane.
When is a long cuff the better buy?
Buy the long cuff when the plant reaches the wrist and forearm. DIY Doctor is the only long-cuff claim here, at £8.49, and UK reviews mention brambles, blackthorn, hawthorn, and roses. A short driver glove such as LLB suits straps and a cold cab, and it leaves the forearm bare.
