Choosing nitrile or vinyl gloves for oil or a wipe

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are looking at a stretchy nitrile box and a cheaper clear pack, and the clear one is either vinyl or a loose polyethylene film that will not survive the job you have in mind. Nitrile or vinyl gloves is a material choice, not a ranking of every ASIN. The twelve boxes stay on the [disposable gloves comparison](/hub/medical-protection/disposable-gloves). Size, believable thickness and which bullets to ignore are on the [disposable gloves buying guide](/hub/medical-protection/disposable-gloves/sub/disposable-gloves-buying-guide). Whether you must wear any glove for food in the UK is on [disposable gloves for food prep](/hub/medical-protection/disposable-gloves/sub/disposable-gloves-food-prep). Prices are amazon.co.uk figures from 20 October 2026. We did not lab-test a glove, and a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three films on this shelf

This shelf has three films, and latex is not one of them. Nine listings are nitrile. Two are the clear fitted alternative: OKIAAS polyvinyl chloride, and GLOVEMAN vinyl at a stated 0.05 mm. One is polyethylene: Brandon-super, 500 loose food gloves. PVC and vinyl are the same family here. A non-plastic bullet does not change the OKIAAS material field. Black is a colour, not a thickness grade: PRAIMA black at 0.1 mm is not the heavy film, and The Real Touch black at 8.5 mil and 0.22 mm is. SMI's order is nitrile for oils and fats, vinyl for short light prep, polyethylene when you expect a rip. That is a material map, not a legal duty to wear gloves.

Nitrile when it has to stretch or meet oil

Choose nitrile when the glove has to stretch across the knuckles or meet oil, grease or a twisting grip. It is the latex-free default on this shelf. A comparison with vinyl on the shared PRAIMA sample says nitrile goes on more easily, so do not count that comment twice. Amazon Basic Care large at £4.41 for 100 is called adequate and not particularly thick, with no thickness stated. 1ABOVE at 0.1 mm is called both thick and quick to rip. UNIGLOVES at 0.08 mm states AQL 1.5 as a bullet only. NHS Wales notes at least 6 N at break for nitrile examination gloves and 3.6 N for vinyl or polyethylene, if the gloves were tested. These listings do not include that test, and a chemical-resistant tick is not an EN ISO 374 type. For car work where thin nitrile already splits, the orange box is the top pick on best disposable gloves, and it still has no mil of its own.

Vinyl for a short, low-force task

Vinyl is enough for a short, low-force task: a dry wipe, hair colour, or polishing silver. It is the worse film when you grip hard, twist, or meet oil and fat. Nisbets calls it the low puncture option for short, low-hazard tasks. A Polyco statement for Shield GD09 is not recommended for fatty foods, and that statement is not a test of OKIAAS or GLOVEMAN. GLOVEMAN medium is £3.96 for 100 at 0.05 mm, the thinnest stated figure here, with 4.6 from 11,611 reviews. OKIAAS medium is £11.99 for 100 PVC, with 0.08 mm and a 3 mil bullet that agree, and reviewers say the wrist is loose. Both care lines say hand wash, which contradicts single use.

Polyethylene is the loose 500

Brandon-super is 500 loose clear gloves, one size, at £9.99, rated 4.3 from 18,131 reviews with only 19 review texts under that count. Cooks use them for raw chicken because they come off the stack quickly. The same texts call them very weak, easy to slip off, and open to liquid. Ignore the listing's 0.7 mm on a 200 g pack of 500. Waterproof flags contradict each other. It suits a job where you change often, not an oily twist that already defeated vinyl. No latex glove is in this set. HSE's note for a latex allergy is to use non-latex, and a hypoallergenic word on some other product can still mean latex. Latex-free on these titles is a label, not a medical assessment.

Common questions

When is nitrile the default?
Nitrile is the default when the glove must stretch or meet oil, grease or a twisting grip. It is not the default for a ten-second dry handling job, and a chemical-resistant bullet does not make it chemical-proof.
When is vinyl enough?
Vinyl is enough for a short, low-force task such as hair colour or a dry wipe. GLOVEMAN at 0.05 mm is the thinnest stated film here. OKIAAS PVC at 0.08 mm is still loose at the wrist in reviews. Skip vinyl for oil, fat, or hard work on the fingertips.
What is the polyethylene pack for?
Brandon-super's pack of 500 is for brief food handling where you expect to change often and you do not need a fitted cuff. Reviewers say the film is weak, slips off and lets liquid in. Ignore the 0.7 mm thickness. At £9.99 the piece price looks low, and the glove is still the wrong tool for oil or a hard grip. Only 19 review texts sit under the 18,131 count.
Can I use vinyl on oily food?
Do not choose vinyl for oily food. Trade guidance treats fatty food as the case where nitrile is the tighter default. Polyco GD09 is not recommended for fatty foods, and that statement is not a test of OKIAAS or GLOVEMAN. The film is the wrong physics. Whether you must wear gloves at all is a different question.
Are any of these latex?
No latex glove is in this set. The titles that mention latex say latex-free, including the nitrile boxes and the clear vinyl boxes. Polyethylene is latex-free by material. HSE still wants non-latex where staff have a latex allergy, and a hypoallergenic claim on some other product can mean latex. If a reaction is not settling, that is a clinical question, not a star rating.
