Are disposable gloves medical grade: bullets to ignore

Blue nitrile disposable gloves beside a box covered in marketing bullets

Medical, puncture proof and chemical resistant on a glove box are listing bullets. Here is what EN 455, AQL 1.5 and an EN ISO 374 type would have to show.

You have a box of blue nitrile in the basket, and the bullets say medical, puncture proof and chemical resistant. Are disposable gloves medical grade when the title says so? On these twelve amazon.co.uk listings, that word does not carry an EN 455 report. Peter F. read the UK listings, the reviews in those files, and guidance from the Health and Safety Executive, NHS Wales and NHS Supply Chain. We did not run a lab test.

Prices are the shelf figures from 20 October 2026. The set is nine nitrile boxes, two vinyl boxes and one polyethylene pack, and none of the files includes a sterile surgical pair. Trade buyers specify EN 455 and EN 374 when they need those standards.

In short

Treat medical, puncture proof, chemical resistant and food grade as marketing until a report is in the file. Examination gloves under EN 455 are sampled to AQL 1.5 for holes, and surgical gloves to AQL 0.65. Those numbers describe the standard, not a result for these ASINs. Choose the film for the task, and leave the rest of the bullet list until it names a test.

The words on the bullet list

Amazon ticks sit beside material and size, so they look like grades. On the 1ABOVE blue nitrile, small, 100 gloves at £6.47, cut-resistant and puncture proof appear next to a stated 0.1 mm. The same file says waterproof in one place and not water resistant in another. UK reviews include garage use, rips within minutes, and a healthcare worker of twenty years who called them the worst they had used.

A puncture proof gloves claim is not an EN 388 score for abrasion, blade cut, tear and puncture. Sheet metal and knife work need a tested glove.

The twelve boxes sit together in the disposable gloves comparison. Touchscreen and food grade are the same kind of line. UNIGLOVES, Xtremeauto and OKIAAS mention a fingertip that works on a phone. OKIAAS clear PVC, £11.99 for 100, says food grade, and 3 mil agrees with 0.08 mm closely enough to quote.

A shared by Amazon review says the gloves were advertised as suitable for food while symbols on the pack said they were not. A bullet is not a food-contact declaration, and UK food handlers are not legally required to wear gloves. Silence in the file is not a laboratory fail. It is also not a reason to promote a tick into a certificate.

What EN 455 gloves would have shown

EN 455 is the series for single-use medical gloves. NHS Wales maps the parts. It does not test these ASINs.

Part 1 is freedom from holes. Examination gloves are held to AQL 1.5 and surgical gloves to AQL 0.65. A lower number is a tighter pin-hole limit on the batch sample. It leaves the glove in your hand unproven.

Part 2 is dimensions and force at break. The NHS Supply Chain 2026 examination specification cites at least 6 newtons for nitrile and 3.6 newtons for vinyl or polyethylene. Those newtons are the bar in that document, not a result for ABENA, PRAIMA, 1ABOVE, GLOVEMAN or by Amazon.

Part 3 covers powder: powder-free, as that specification quotes it, means residual powder at or below 2 mg per glove. The labels here say powder-free. The files do not show the 2 mg test.

Surgical gloves are sterile and shaped left and right. These twelve are ambidextrous retail films. Large sizes are in the large disposable gloves comparison, and a large stamp does not add EN 455. A sterile procedure needs the product the procedure names.

Chemical resistance needs the substance

HSE asks you to match the glove to the substance with breakthrough data and the safety data sheet. Current marking is EN ISO 374-1. An EN ISO 374 type, Type A, Type B or Type C, only counts how many listed test chemicals reached a permeation level. The letters are not a ladder, and they do not time the bottle under the sink. Older pages still say EN 374-2 and EN 374-3.

A chemical resistant nitrile bullet names neither bleach, white spirit nor nail-varnish remover, and it gives no minutes. HSE sheet S101 says no permeation test promises more than eight hours, that you bin single-use gloves when they come off, and that you wash afterwards. Splash and a short task are the case for a thin disposable. Immersion needs a longer cuff than these boxes have.

Nitrile is the film for stretch and oil. That is a material choice. Vinyl and polyethylene suit a short, low-force task. A solvent belongs with the safety data sheet, and a COSHH assessment is where a competent person takes over. The 100-count boxes, standards still unstated, are in the 100-count disposable gloves comparison.

Thickness figures that cannot be true

Two figures should not be repeated as measurements. by Amazon lists item weight as 0.3 g on the medium nitrile and 0.35 g on the large. A box of 100 does not weigh a third of a gram. Ignore both.

Brandon-super lists 0.7 mm on a 200 g pack of 500 polyethylene pieces at £9.99. A film that thick would not weigh 200 g. Use the stated size, about 11.2 by 9.8 inches, and treat the pack as a loose film for a quick dry food task. The 18,131 reviews are not a British-only sample.

Figures that agree are usable. OKIAAS states 3 mil and 0.08 mm. The Real Touch, 50 at £6.99, states 8.5 mil and 0.22 mm. UNIGLOVES states 0.08 mm, PRAIMA and 1ABOVE state 0.1 mm, GLOVEMAN vinyl states 0.05 mm. A missing thickness is a gap.

Xtremeauto orange large is the top pick only where thin nitrile splits on car work: 50 at £11.99, 4.7 from 957 reviews, diamond grip, extra thick with no mil. Reviews say it lasted longer than cheap nitrile and still rips. About 24 pence a glove, against about 4 pence for by Amazon large at £4.41 for 100. The care line says discard them.

What AQL 1.5 means on one bullet

UNIGLOVES Magenta Pearl, small, 100 at £11.30, is the only box here that prints an AQL, as "Chlorinated AQL 1, 5". Readers usually meet that as AQL 1.5, the EN 455-1 pin-hole sampling limit for examination gloves. A batch can pass and the glove on your hand can still have a hole. Chlorinated is a surface treatment, not the hole test, and the file has no laboratory sheet.

The other eleven boxes do not state an AQL. That absence is not a measured fail. It means you should not paste the UNIGLOVES line onto PRAIMA at £5.99, ABENA at £7.02, or by Amazon. A sales rank on that listing does not attach the four parts of EN 455.

What to read before you buy

Read the material first: nitrile for stretch and oil, vinyl or polyethylene only for a short, low-force task. Then the size letter. Several UK reviews say the marked size runs small, so one size up is the usual correction, and one box before a case is the sensible spend. Then thickness, only when mil and millimetres agree and the pack weight is plausible. Drop 0.3 g, 0.35 g and 0.7 mm.

Then reuse: HSE says bin a single-use glove when it comes off and wash afterwards.

Price per glove matters more than the box price. GLOVEMAN vinyl is £3.96 for 100. by Amazon large is £4.41 for 100, with 4.6 from 9,310 reviews shared with the medium at £5.13, so do not count that crowd twice. PRAIMA's 7,371 is shared by medium and large at £5.99. The best value box for ordinary dirt is the by Amazon large, still a thin film with no thickness stated.

A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Call a competent person for COSHH, a latex allergy that is not settling, a food business skipping washing, or any sterile task.

Common questions

Does medical on the title mean the gloves meet EN 455?
A medical line means the seller typed that word. EN 455 is a series for single-use medical gloves, with a hole test, a force-at-break test, a powder check and a shelf-life part. NHS Wales explains the examination-glove hole limit as AQL 1.5 and the surgical limit as AQL 0.65. Those figures describe the standard. They are not a result we hold for these twelve amazon.co.uk boxes, because the saved listings do not include the reports. Treat the title as marketing until the parts are named and the sheet is there.
What does AQL 1.5 mean on a glove box?
AQL means acceptable quality limit. Under EN 455-1 it is the sampling limit for pin-holes on a batch of examination gloves, and UK buying notes use 1.5 for that examination grade. A lower number is a tighter limit. Surgical gloves in the same family of rules sit at 0.65. The limit does not promise that the glove in your hand is intact. You can still find a split in an accepted batch. On this shelf only UNIGLOVES prints an AQL figure, as "AQL 1, 5", and that line is a bullet with no laboratory sheet attached.
Is a puncture proof gloves claim the same as a cut level?
A puncture proof tick is an Amazon attribute, not an EN 388 score. EN 388 is the mechanical-risk series that grades abrasion, blade cut, tear and puncture with numbers you can read on a work glove. 1ABOVE's blue nitrile box carries cut-resistant and puncture-proof ticks, and the same file is a 0.1 mm disposable film. UK reviews on that box include rips within minutes. HSE points mechanical risk at a tested glove. A thin nitrile box is the wrong tool for sheet metal, knife control or chainsaw work, whatever the tick says.
What is an EN ISO 374 type?
EN ISO 374-1 marks chemical protective gloves as Type A, Type B or Type C. The letter counts how many listed test chemicals reached a permeation level. It is not a ladder from ordinary to best, and it does not name the bottle under your sink. HSE wants breakthrough data for the substance you actually use, read with the safety data sheet. Older guidance still says EN 374-2 and EN 374-3. A chemical resistant nitrile bullet on these listings does not state a type, a chemical, or a time in minutes.
Is a touchscreen claim a safety claim?
Touchscreen means the fingertip may work on a phone. UNIGLOVES, Xtremeauto and OKIAAS mention it. That is a convenience while you answer a message with the glove still on. It says nothing about pin-holes, force at break, chemical minutes or cut resistance. If the listing leads with touchscreen and stays quiet on EN 455 or EN ISO 374, you have learned the marketing order, not the test order. Keep the glove for the task it can plausibly do, and bin it when it comes off.
Why should you ignore 0.3 g and 0.7 mm?
The by Amazon nitrile pages list item weight as 0.3 g on the medium and 0.35 g on the large. A box of 100 nitrile gloves cannot weigh a third of a gram, so those fields are listing errors, not a mil and not a pack weight. Brandon-super lists 0.7 mm on a 200 g pack of 500 polyethylene pieces. A film that thick, five hundred times, would not weigh 200 g. Use the stated size, about 11.2 by 9.8 inches, and the review pattern instead. Quote a thickness only when mil and millimetres agree.
Which of these boxes mentions AQL at all?
UNIGLOVES Magenta Pearl, small, 100 gloves at £11.30, is the listing that writes it, as "Chlorinated AQL 1, 5". Chlorinated is a surface treatment. The AQL fragment is the hole-test idea, printed with a comma and without a report. The other eleven boxes in this set do not state an AQL in the files we used. That absence is not a fail we measured in a lab. It does mean you should not copy the UNIGLOVES line onto PRAIMA, ABENA, 1ABOVE or by Amazon, and you should not fill the gap with the words medical grade.
