Best salinity meter

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want the best salinity meter you can order today, and the star line on amazon.co.uk will not tell you which listing is accurate. The highest stars in this set belong to a 38-review refractometer, and the largest review count belongs to a wide-range optical meter that has never been in a lab comparison on this page. This shortlist is conditional. It uses the twelve amazon.co.uk listings priced on 21 October 2026, plus the review bodies filed with those listings. Products Compared did not test them on a bench. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The full table stays on the [salinity meter comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/salinity-meter).

What this page will not crown

Best here means the listing whose stated job, kit and review sample fit the water you keep, with the repeating complaint left in view. It does not mean the most accurate meter in Britain. No one in this project ran a head-to-head against a reference seawater sample. Stars are coverage. Agriculture Solutions WL0020-ATC is 4.6 from 4,704 ratings, and the notes do not contain 4,704 review texts. HXTDBY is 4.8 from 38. The 9-in-1 pen is 5.0 from four reviews, none written in the UK. Those lines cannot be stacked as an accuracy ladder. If you need the criteria before a name, use the salinity meter buying guide.

A budget optical meter with a large review count

For a home marine mix on a budget, the conditional pick is Agriculture Solutions WL0020-ATC, sold as Aqueous Lab, ASIN B018LRO1SU, at £13.99. The title says seawater and marine fishkeeping, 0–100 ppt. The box lists a hard case, a dropper, a screwdriver, a manual and a cloth. UK reviews call it useful for mixing saltwater once calibrated. Zero it on fresh water at the same temperature as the sample. One unit arrived with a broken internal lens, and the brand field does not match the title, so order it as WL0020-ATC. Do not jump to HXTDBY because 4.8 looks cleaner: £17.85 from 38 reviews, and one UK unit would not zero below specific gravity 1.005. XRCLIF, also £13.99, is the best value optical alternative when you want ATC printed as 10–30 °C.

A pen for pool pH and salt, not for reef salinity

If the job is a salt chlorinator or a pond dose you already know, a 5-in-1 pen is the closer instrument, and a poor reef salinity tool in the reviews we have. UIUZMAR UI-09A at £29.99 states 0–9990 ppm, 10.1–100.0 ppt and 0.0–15%, and the box includes pH calibration powder. It is 4.3 from 406 reviews. Pond keepers use it after calibration. One reef keeper said pH was fine and salinity was not even close. That sentence is the skip rule for a coral tank. YINMIK YK-5SEU at £28.99 is 4.1 from 1,119 reviews. A UK comparison against a Hanna instrument found salinity and temperature off. The file ASIN is B0CN4NJZ89 and the product URL is B0C6P4V4FR. None of these pens is the pick for 35 ppt. Why 3,000 ppm is not 35 ppt is on the aquarium and pool page. Lazmin112 at £28.50 is 3.3 from three reviews and is not on the shortlist.

When the amazon.co.uk set is the wrong shelf

Leave this set when you want a scale sold as seawater, or a conductivity meter calibrated at a seawater point. Fishkeeper's TMC refractometer is £35. Complete Aquatics lists the D-D refractometer at £34.99. Hanna's UK page sells the HI-98319 at £108.36 including VAT, with calibration points at 5.00 and 35.00 ppt. Those are other shops' products, not hidden ASINs, and not a result we measured. TEKCOPLUS at £115.99 is not the premium version of those meters. Eight reviews, a 2.4 GHz-only app, and a seller sentence of ±2% of full scale do not equal a Hanna. The 9-in-1 pen at £54.90 does not either: five stars from four non-UK reviews, and no pH channel. Stay if a £13.99 optical kit plus a careful zero is what you can maintain. Move if two careful readings already disagree and the animals are why you are measuring.

Common questions

Which listing is the sensible budget pick for a marine tank?
WL0020-ATC at £13.99, titled Aqueous Lab and branded Agriculture Solutions in the file, with 4.6 from 4,704 ratings and a case, dropper and screwdriver listed. Zero it on fresh water at the sample temperature. The review count is not an accuracy certificate, and a unit with a dead lens goes back.
Why not buy the 4.8-star refractometer?
HXTDBY's 4.8 comes from 38 reviews. One UK buyer could not calibrate below specific gravity 1.005 on RO water. Other buyers like it once it is set. Stars alone are the wrong reason to prefer it over the much larger sample at £13.99.
Which pen is for a salt pool rather than a reef?
UIUZMAR UI-09A is the clearest pool-and-pond example because the powder is in the box and the stated range includes ppm. A UK reef review still says not to trust its salinity channel for a reef. YINMIK YK-5SEU has more reviews and the same split, plus two ASIN codes in the file.
Is the £116 Wi-Fi monitor the premium pick?
No. TEKCOPLUS has 3.7 from eight reviews, and one UK review likes the app. That sample is too small to treat it as a premium salinity pick. The ±2% of full scale line is the seller's sentence, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi is not claimed.
Should I leave amazon.co.uk for a D-D or Hanna?
Leave when you want a seawater scale or a meter calibrated at 35 ppt, which these 0–100 ppt titles do not claim. D-D at about £34.99 and Hanna at £108.36 including VAT are that other shelf. Stay if you will zero a budget refractometer and keep the method consistent.
