Grain moisture meter buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to pay for a meter before a trailer of wheat or barley is dried, stored, or sent to the merchant. This grain moisture meter buying guide checks the decision the number will support, the crop the listing names, and whether you can verify the meter once a year. The [grain moisture meter comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/grain-moisture-meter) lines up seven amazon.co.uk listings from £23.79 to £208.00. None describes a grinder. Selling on the figure means the next class of tool, from around £305 excluding VAT. Peter F. read the captures on 21 October 2026 and did not oven-test them. A qualifying Amazon purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the decision, not the crop list

AHDB treats a probe as a rapid look through a bulk, not as a replacement for a sample meter. A shallow spear, under about 0.5 m, read low. A store walk can use a rod if you then confirm the wet patch with grain you removed. A contract, or a percent you tell a merchant, needs a cup you fill and compress, or a grinder. The rods in this set are not sample meters, and HavenlyCove describes neither a cup nor a grinder. Rod against sample is on the grain moisture probe or cup meter page. A rod in a 29-tonne trailer cannot stand in for the merchant’s sample.

Crop curve and a yearly check

Wheat and barley can share a cereal approach on a meter that names both. Oilseed rape cannot borrow that figure. AHDB’s long-store target for rape is 7.5–8%, and not below 6%. Maize sits outside the ISO 712 oven scope, so a line that says 40 crops is not a maize calibration. Only the £208.00 WapoRich row also names oilseed rape. HavenlyCove names coffee and cocoa and does not name wheat. Ayayu’s title leads with hay, and the United Kingdom review of 5 October 2024 says there is no hay setting. The UK Grain Testing Network sells oven-tested packs for Protimeter, Sinar, Unimeter and Wile 78. These seven ASINs are not on that list. A trim written as 3% to ±5% is not that check.

What these seven listings actually state

The written reviews behind AMTAST’s 3.9 from 70 are marked Brazil, Canada, Mexico or the United States. Do not average the two RQ-W65pro weights, 593 g and 432 g. None of these listings states ISO approval, UKCA marking, or a BS 1363 plug. YUKERMARB’s battery lines disagree, and HavenlyCove prints 432 g and 553 g. Who each listing is for is on the best grain moisture meter page.

When the next meter is a grinder

None of these seven amazon.co.uk listings describes a grinder. You step up when the percent will be argued: a claim, a specification, or a load you are paid on. A £24 probe is a different method, not a cheap version of a Unimeter or a Wile. You can still keep a rod for walking the store. Farmers Weekly has discussed a Protimeter Grainmaster. That is not a test of these ASINs. Buy for the decision, then check the meter every year. The storage percents, including malting barley, are on wheat barley storage moisture.

Common questions

What should you check before you buy a grain moisture meter?
Check the job, then the crop curve, then the method, then whether you can verify the meter once a year. A store walk can use a probe. A sale or a dryer contract needs a sample, and usually a grinder. AHDB’s meter guidance treats a probe as a bulk scan and asks for an annual calibration. A list of 14 or 40 crop names does not replace either check. On the amazon.co.uk page, also see whether wheat is named, and whether any UK review says the unit missed the job.
When do you need a grinding meter rather than a probe?
You need a grinder when the number will be compared with a merchant’s tester or written into a contract. AHDB found probes more variable than sample meters, and shallow insertion read low. None of the seven listings here describes a grinder. UK farm shops start that class around £305 excluding VAT for a Unimeter digital grinding meter. A probe can still hunt for a wet patch after you own the grinder.
What does a farm-shop grinding meter cost compared with these listings?
These seven amazon.co.uk listings run from £23.79 to £208.00 in the captures. Agricultural Supply Services shows a Unimeter grinding meter from £305 excluding VAT and a Wile 78 from £370 excluding VAT. A Farmex MT-PRO at £462 and a Sinar GrainPro at £1,599 excluding sales tax sit further up. Those shop prices are not Amazon shelf prices. The gap is the method and the yearly check, not a few pounds between two cups.
Does a stated ±0.5% mean the meter has been checked on UK wheat?
No. Both WapoRich RQ-W65pro listings state ±0.5% and 0.1% resolution. That figure is a seller bullet. AHDB’s meter work found that maintained farm meters were usually within about ±0.5% of an oven near 15% moisture. These captures contain no oven comparison, and neither cup has a star line. Do not treat the bullet as a result on UK wheat.
How often should a meter be checked?
Once a year is the interval AHDB gives for a meter you will use on grain you sell or store. The UK Grain Testing Network sells oven-tested packs, referenced to BS EN ISO 712-1:2024 for cereals, in 180 g for small meters such as Protimeter, Sinar, Unimeter and Wile 78. These seven ASINs are not named on that list. A trim of several percent on a cheap probe is not a substitute for that check.
Which of these seven listings is the wrong tool for selling wheat?
A probe you treat as the final percent is the wrong tool, and so is HavenlyCove if you needed wheat named on the page. Oumefar’s UK review of 30 September 2026 says two units bought for grain were not fit for the job. The cups describe a compressed sample and still have no reviews. For a figure you will be paid on, leave this set and buy a grinder you can check.
