Geiger counter buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at amazon.co.uk titles that all say radiation. A geiger counter buying guide has to separate a Geiger–Müller meter from a food tester, an EMF box, and a bare kit before the price matters. This page is that filter for the eight listings on the [Geiger counter comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/geiger-counter). Peter F. updated it on 16 October 2026 from those files, from UKHSA, and from the HSE page on the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017. We did not laboratory-test a tube. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The [best geiger counter](/hub/measuring-equipment/geiger-counter/sub/geiger-counter-best) page assigns one listing to each job.

What a consumer Geiger counter can and cannot see

A counter in this set counts ionising events and may convert them into a dose rate. The tube does not measure the energy of each event, so the screen cannot name an isotope. A glass or metal wall lets through much of the gamma and X-ray, and some beta, and it stops alpha. None of the eight listings states a mica window. The FNIRSI GC-01 at £50.79 and the Soogua at £37.60 both print 48 keV to 1.5 MeV, within ±30% for caesium-137 gamma, and a cumulative span of 0.00 µSv to 500.0 mSv. Matching paragraphs may be copied text, not proof the tubes match. UKHSA's June 2025 review puts average UK exposure at about 2.6 mSv a year. Do not turn 2.6 mSv into a normal µSv/h. Counts per minute are what you compare with your own background.

The checks that matter on an amazon.co.uk listing

Read the bullets before the title. You want a radiation line, a sensor or tube name, and a unit you can write down. Logging to a computer is stated for the GQ GMC-800 and the GMC-320S, and it is absent from the GC-01 and Soogua files. An alarm only counts if the listing says what it does. The GMC-800 listing says its design meets US NIST and NRC standards. That is a US design sentence, not a UKAS certificate, and not approved dosimetry under IRR17. The FD-5000 card shows a response. It does not calibrate the meter. If the bullets talk about nitrate, you are not looking at a counter.

How the listings in this set sort

The GMC-800, at £80.98 with 4.6 from 1,097 reviews, names beta, gamma and X-ray, logs for up to 10 years, and lists LED, audio, vibration and voice alarms. Its amazon file does not print a dose-rate range. The Soogua, at £37.60 with 4.1 from 145 reviews, is the lower price among named GM sensors. Its sample includes a tray review and an alarm that stuck until the battery was disconnected. The Shkalacar at £59.09 is a driver board, not a meter you switch on tonight. The SPORTARC at £34.39 is almost only a title. The GMC-800 against the GC-01 stays on the GMC-800 vs GC-01 page.

Jobs that are a different product

A radon test is a different product. UKHSA's home method is two passive detectors for about three months, listed at £52.80 including VAT, in becquerels per cubic metre. None of these listings states a Bq/m³ mode. A quiet counter does not clear a house. The steps sit on the geiger counter radon page. A click on food or granite is a count, not a verdict that it is safe or unsafe to eat. EMF boxes are a different measurement. IRR17 sets 20 mSv in a calendar year for adult employees and 1 mSv for other people, with the exceptions Schedule 3 writes. A consumer meter is not how an employer meets that duty.

Common questions

What radiation should the listing name?
Look for beta, gamma and X-ray in the bullets, plus a GM sensor or a named tube. A title-only line, as on the SPORTARC and the Dpofirs, is weaker. Alpha is not stated on any of the eight listings. No listing here states a mica window you could treat as an alpha claim. Glass is the usual reason a cheap counter misses alpha.
Is µSv/h or CPM the number to compare?
Use counts per minute against a background you recorded in the same room. Use µSv/h only as the maker's gamma estimate. The GC-01 manufacturer page prints conflicting dose-rate lines, so this guide does not quote one GC-01 rate. The GMC-800 PDF range is not in this amazon listing. Comparing CPM across brands is still rough, because the tubes differ.
Does NIST on a GMC-800 listing mean UK calibration?
No. The bullet says the design meets US NIST and NRC standards. That is not a certificate that your unit was calibrated in the UK, and it is not UKAS. The FD-5000 card is a response check, with buyer reports around 27 µSv/h and about 35 µSv/h. Neither sentence makes the meter an approved dosemeter under IRR17.
How is a kit different from a handheld?
The Shkalacar at £59.09 is an assembled board for M4011, STS-5, SBM-20 and J305 tubes at 330 to 600 V, with PC or Matlab logging stated. Reviews describe fitting your own tube, loose solder, and a tube that arrived broken. There is no dose screen until you add a microcontroller. The GMC-800 and the GC-01 are cased meters. Buy the kit only if the build is the hobby.
Can this replace a radon test?
No. Radon in a UK home is Bq/m³, averaged over months. The Action Level is 200 Bq/m³ and the Target Level is 100 Bq/m³. UKHSA's pack is two detectors for about three months at £52.80 including VAT. Clicks are not that test. This page only tells you not to buy a counter for that job.
What fails in reviews of cheap meters?
On the GC-01, UK reviews include readings far below another meter, a red light after four or five days, and no click until firmware is changed. On the Soogua, one alarm stuck until the battery was disconnected, and the sample includes a tray. On the Dpofirs, a UK buyer saw little from a smoke alarm, and one unit arrived looking used. The star line does not show those faults on its own.
