Mulching mower for a small garden

Updated: October 2026

The side return is two paving slabs wide, the lawn slopes toward the fence, and a 43 cm deck would spend the summer in the hall. A mulching mower for a small garden, in this set, means 22 cm or 33 cm, or the corded hover, when you can finish in a few narrow passes. Wider machines stay on the [mulching lawn mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/mulching-lawn-mower). The Products Compared editorial team used amazon.co.uk listings dated 19 October 2026. Which? and The English Garden do not share one definition of small. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

How small is the lawn

Which? suggests a cutting width under 35 cm for lawns up to about 50 m². The English Garden starts its small band higher: 30–35 cm for lawns up to about 250 m². Small is not the same garden in both guides. The Swift EB122C claims up to 50 m², which is still a claim. Pace the grass. A 38 cm deck is the wrong tool for a path it barely enters.

A 22 cm mulcher for a patch

The Swift EB122C is £134.99, with 4.5 from 330 amazon.co.uk reviews. The bullets describe a 22 cm super-mulch deck, a 40 V 2.0 Ah battery and fast charger, about 35 minutes, lawns up to 50 m² and 5.2 kg. There is no grass box. An item highlight mentions five heights while a bullet says three, so the height count on the page disagrees with itself. The 50 m² and 35-minute lines are claims. Skip it when you must lift clippings, or when a 33 cm deck would finish the rectangle sooner.

A 33 cm deck if you still want a box

Three cordless 33 cm rows still collect. The Litheli at £109.99 is 20 V with a 5.0 Ah battery, a 35 L box and 2-in-1 mulch or collect, at 4.3 from 684 reviews. A bullet says up to 30 minutes, which is a claim. For a small lawn that sometimes needs the box, this is the larger pack at the lower price. The Greenworks GD24LM33 is £199.99, with a 30 L bag and a 24 V 2 Ah battery. The Hyundai HY20CLM33 is £125.99, a 3-in-1 with a 32 L bag and 3.9 from only 51 reviews.

A hover if the ground is bumpy

The LawnMaster MEH1633M-01 is £69.00, with 4.1 from 48 reviews. It is a 1,600 W corded hover, 33 cm, four heights from 12 mm to 33 mm and 7.5 kg, and the bullets say the clippings are mulched back. There is no box and no roller. On a bumpy lawn that would make a wheeled deck scalp, the air cushion is the point. Forty-eight reviews is a thin sample, and the 12 mm step can scalp if you leave it there.

What to leave in the main table

Leave the Worx WG737E at 37 cm, the Murray and the Hyundai HYM3800E at 38 cm, and the Einhell 43 cm with its 63 L bag for a lawn that can use that width. A collection-only rotary that appears in a mulching search is also the wrong buy. Pace the lawn, decide whether you must collect, then pick 22 cm, a 33 cm box, or the hover.

Common questions

Is 22 cm too small?
It is the right width for a patch, a bank or the strips a wider mower cannot enter, which is how Swift EB122C reviewers describe the 5.2 kg deck. It is too small when the lawn is a plain rectangle you could finish faster at 33 cm. The listing's 50 m² claim matches Which?'s under-35 cm band and remains a claim. If you also need a grass box, step up to a 33 cm 2-in-1.
What is small if Which? and The English Garden disagree?
Which? uses under 35 cm up to about 50 m². The English Garden uses 30–35 cm up to about 250 m². Pace yours. If it is a few narrow passes and a tight shed, stay with 22 cm, 33 cm or the hover. If it is closer to 250 m², a 38 cm Murray may be the better Saturday.
Hover or wheels on a bumpy lawn?
A hover rides an air cushion, which is why the RHS recommends that type on uneven ground and why the LawnMaster is in this set at 7.5 kg. Wheels follow the bumps and can scalp unless you stay high. The hover will not collect and will not stripe. If the bumps are mild and you need a 35 L box, the Litheli's wheels are the trade.
Can I collect on a small lawn?
Yes, on a 2-in-1 or 3-in-1. The Litheli has a 35 L box, the Greenworks a 30 L bag, the Hyundai 20 V a 32 L bag, and the Swift 32 cm a 30 L box. The Swift 22 cm and the LawnMaster do not collect. On a long or wet week, the box is why a 33 cm 2-in-1 is easier to live with.
Will a 2 Ah pack finish a 33 cm lawn?
The Greenworks listing claims up to 140 m² on its 24 V 2 Ah pack. That is the maker's ceiling, not a timed mow in this file. The Litheli's 5.0 Ah pack is the larger capacity at 20 V, with its own up to 30 minutes claim. A lawn around 50 m² is the sort of patch where a 2 Ah kit is plausible. Closer to 140 m², the 5.0 Ah row is the safer reading.
Is the £69 hover safe to trust with 48 reviews?
The price and the score call it best value, and 48 reviews is the reason to stay cautious. The listed facts are 33 cm, 1,600 W, 7.5 kg, heights from 12 mm to 33 mm, mulch and no box. If that sample is unacceptable, the Litheli's 684 reviews on a 33 cm cordless deck are the alternative, at £109.99, without the lead.
