Fiskars hedge shears buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at a row of orange Fiskars handles on amazon.co.uk and trying to tell a plain shear from a wavy one, a geared one, and a telescopic one. This Fiskars hedge shears buying guide is the criteria page: mechanism, weight, steel, and the price bands in this snapshot, so you can name the type before you name a winner. The ten listings, with GBP prices and where the sampled reviews were written, sit on the [Fiskars hedge trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/fiskars-hedge-trimmer). Peter F. read those amazon.co.uk listings on 22 October 2026. This is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

Every tool in this set is a manual hedge shear: two blades, two handles, no motor, no battery, and no plug. People buy one to shape a garden hedge or a few shrubs when a powered cutter is too much machine. HSE guidance on vibration, INDG480, is about powered trimmers, so it does not say how these shears feel after twenty minutes on privet. The orange colour is shared. The mechanism is not. A plain pivot, a wavy SingleStep, a geared PowerGear, a steel-handle Power-Lever, and a telescopic handle are different tools that share a brand. ManoMano’s UK guide treats shears as a tool for branches under about 1.5 cm. That figure is theirs, not a measurement on these listings. A woody stem that notches a blade wants a lopper.

Plain, wavy, geared, or telescopic

Start with the growth, then your hands. Soft annual shoots suit any sharp shear here. A long green face is where UK reviews point at gearing. The Solid HS21 is the plain fixed shear: about 59 cm, 780 g, about £20.90, 4.4 from 2,001 reviews, and 48 of the first 50 sample reviews from the United Kingdom. The wavy SingleStep HS22, about 58 cm at about £17.51, is meant to hold the stem as you close. The SoftGrip HS10, 55 cm at about £31.65, has only 49 reviews and no UK-written text in the sample. If your hands tire, the geared rows are the HS72 at about £26.31, the PowerGear X at about £17.51, and a 23 inch PowerGear2 also at about £17.51. You pay for a wider handle opening and, on the HS72, a plastic joint that UK reviews say can snap on thick wood. That argument is on the Fiskars PowerGear vs SingleStep page. A longer handle is not a ladder.

Weight, steel, and edges that meet

Weight is what you feel at the end of a privet run, and several cells disagree with themselves. The HS22 spec block says 710 g and the contents line says 840 g. Woodford Tools states 580 mm and 840 g, which matches the contents line rather than the 710 g cell. Do not average those into one official weight. The HS13 is listed at 1.55 kg, and UK reviews call it heavy. The SmartFit is listed at 1.25 kg. High-carbon steel rusts if you leave it wet. A non-stick coating is not a permanent edge. UK reviews of the HS21 and the HS22 include a gap, bent blades, or tips that stay open. Close the pair when it arrives. If the tips miss, that is a returns question under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

What the amazon.co.uk prices are doing

These shelf prices are a snapshot, not a market index, and they will move. The entry band is about £17 to £21: the HS22, the PowerGear X, the 23 inch PowerGear2, and the HS21 at about £20.90. The mid band, about £25 to £40, holds the HS13 at about £25.09, the HS72 at about £26.31, the HS10 at about £31.65, and the 9181 at about £39.08. The 9181 sample has no UK-written review in the first 50 blocks. Premium reach, about £56 to £60, is the SmartFit at about £59.65 and model 91696935J at about £56.10. Only the SmartFit has a full UK sample of those two. Warranty cells do not follow the price: two years, twenty-five years on the HSX92, 0 months on the HS10, or empty. Fiskars’ UK FAQ says there is no lifetime guarantee in Europe.

Common questions

Do I need PowerGear or is a plain shear enough?
A plain shear is enough when the growth is soft and the session is short. The HS21, at about £20.90 with a large UK review sample, is that plain pivot. PowerGear is kinder on a long green face, and it still fails if you treat it as a lopper. Two geared listings cost the same about £17.51 as the wavy HS22.
Is a wavy blade better than a straight one?
Better only for holding a stem while you close. The HS22’s wavy edge is that job, at about £17.51. It is not automatically cleaner. UK reviews include tips that stay open and an edge that dulls. A straight pair whose edges meet will beat a wavy pair whose tips miss.
Will telescopic handles replace a ladder?
No. The HS13 is stated at 63–83 cm and the SmartFit at 68–93 cm. That is extra reach with both feet on the ground, not a way up a tall face. The RHS says keep a hedge at a height you can maintain safely. If you would need steps, stop.
Are the blades stainless or high-carbon?
It depends on the row, and some rows contradict themselves. The HS21 cell says stainless steel while a bullet says hardened steel. The HS13 cell says high carbon steel, and a UK review says to oil it or it will rust. A non-stick claim is a coating, not a sharp edge.
Does Fiskars include a lifetime guarantee in the UK?
No. Fiskars’ UK FAQ says there is no lifetime guarantee in Europe. Warranty cells here disagree: two years, twenty-five years on the HSX92, zero months on the HS10, or empty. Forcing a shear through thick wood sits outside a materials warranty.
