When can I cut my hedge UK: a nest, farm, or garden

Updated: October 2026

A neighbour may say summer cutting is illegal, a farm rule runs from March to August, and a gardening page says trim privet in June. When you can cut your hedge in the UK depends on which hedge it is. An active nest stops the job. A garden hedge is not the agricultural ban. The [cordless hedge trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-hedge-trimmer) is the tool table, and this page does not rank trimmers. We are not a solicitor, and we did not survey your boundary. Once you may cut, the string-line method is on [how to trim a hedge](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-hedge-trimmer/sub/cordless-hedge-trimmer-how-to-trim). If height is the problem rather than the date, the shape of tool is on [pole hedge trimmer or handheld](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-hedge-trimmer/sub/cordless-hedge-trimmer-pole-or-handheld).

The nest rule

In England, Scotland and Wales, the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it an offence to damage a wild bird's nest that is in use or being built. That is a nest rule, not a ban on every hedge from March to August. The RSPB treats March to September as the main nesting season and recommends planning hedge work for 1 September to 28 February. They still say you should check outside that window, because some birds nest early or late. Northern Ireland uses the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985. The step is the same: look, and stop the section if a nest is in use or being built. Leave that stretch until the birds have finished.

The agricultural ban is a different hedge

The Management of Hedgerows (England) Regulations 2024 restrict cutting a covered agricultural hedgerow from 1 March to 31 August. They are SI 2024/680 and came into force on 23 May 2024. A covered hedgerow meets the tests in those rules, including a length of 20 metres. A hedge in the curtilage of a dwelling is outside that ban. A suburban back garden is not a farm hedgerow. On a field hedge the closed season applies, unless GOV.UK itself states an exception. If the hedge is around a house, the nest rule still applies and the agricultural dates do not. Removing a countryside hedgerow is a consent question, not a job for a cordless trimmer.

When the plant wants a cut

The RHS prunes privet two or three times in the growing season. Leyland cypress is also two or three times, from April to the end of August, and not back into bare wood. Most conifers will not reshoot from old wood. Yew is the exception. Box is two or three times as well. Gardeners' World says box should not be cut in the wet or after August because of box blight. That note is plant health, not a statute. June is a privet month only if the hedge is empty of nests. You do not wait until September merely because a farm hedge is closed, and you do not ignore a nest because the plant is in growth. A wider tooth gap, if you later need one, is on the cordless hedge trimmer buying guide.

Height, neighbours, and removal

Part 8 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003 is a complaint route in England and Wales about a high hedge, not a rule that every hedge must be 2 metres. It covers a line of two or more evergreens, mostly over 2 metres, that acts as a barrier to light or access. Scotland's process is not set out here. You cannot force a neighbour's hedge to 2 metres by quoting the Act. Your own garden hedge is not illegal in summer because it is tall. If you cannot reach the top safely, check for nests, then lower it, use a pole, or hire someone with a proper platform.

Common questions

Can I cut my garden hedge in summer?
You can, if it is a garden hedge and you do not damage a nest that is in use or being built. The RSPB's main season is March to September, so you look more carefully then. The 1 March to 31 August agricultural ban is a different hedge. A June privet is a nest check, then a cut if that stretch is empty.
What if I see a nest?
Stop that section and leave the nest until the birds have finished. Do not take just the top if you will disturb it. The 1981 Act, and the 1985 Order in Northern Ireland, are about the nest, not about a tidy face. An empty stretch of the same hedge is a separate decision.
Does the farm hedgerow ban cover a suburban boundary?
Not just because the hedge is long. The 2024 Regulations apply to a covered agricultural hedgerow and exclude the curtilage of a dwelling. A back garden is the nest rule, not an automatic close from 1 March to 31 August. A field hedge on farmland is the case the ban was written for.
When does the RHS trim privet, box, and Leyland cypress?
Privet, two or three times in the growing season. Box, two or three times as well. Leyland cypress, two or three times from April to the end of August on the RHS Leyland page, and not back into bare wood. Gardeners' World adds that box is better left uncut in the wet and after August, because of blight. Each of those dates still starts with a nest check.
Can I force a neighbour's hedge down to 2 metres?
No. In England and Wales, Part 8 is a council complaint about two or more evergreens, mostly over 2 metres, that block light or access, after you have tried to resolve it. It is not a duty to cut to 2 metres, and it does not cover roots. Scotland's process is not set out here.
Is Northern Ireland the same Act?
No. Nest protection there is the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985, not the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The 1981 Act is the Great Britain nest rule used above. The agricultural hedgerow regulations cited here are the England rules. If your hedge is in Northern Ireland, use the NI order for the nest and do not import the English farm dates as if they were the same instrument.
