Single vs double shoulder strimmer harness

Updated: October 2026

The advert says a double harness is the upgrade, and the machine in the shed has a loop handle you sweep across your body. A single vs double shoulder strimmer harness decision follows that handle, not the word universal. The Products Compared editorial team compared the twelve amazon.co.uk listings in the [brushcutter harness comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/brushcutter-harness) on 22 October 2026. This is not a lab test, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Two of those listings are single straps. The other ten are double shoulder vests. A double vest is still not a forestry harness with a hip belt.

Single strap

A single strap is the layout for a loop handle, sometimes called a round handle, when you sweep the shaft across your body. STIHL’s UK account puts a single adjustable strap on that handle, and a shoulder strap whenever you fit a grass blade or a brush knife. The hook meets a carrying ring on the shaft. You are not holding a bike handle in front of your hips. In this set the single straps are Fuwithfu, B0H4RLM782, at about £4.99, and Wtirey, B0H7JFRX86, at about £9.99. Fuwithfu claims 80 cm to 128 cm, has no customer-review line, and prints both 120 g and 20 g. Wtirey claims the same range, at 130 g, with 4.6 from three reviews. One review is a camera gimbal. One Stihl brush cutter had to be modified. Three reviews are the only evidence these two straps have.

Double shoulder vest

A double shoulder harness is the layout for a bike handle held in front of you. STIHL leaves the FS 55, FS 56 and FS 94 on the supplied single strap, and puts the FS 70 class upward, plus clearing saws, on a double. If a larger bike-handle machine came with a single strap, replace it rather than copying the box. Every ASIN here except Fuwithfu and Wtirey is a double. The orange YOUSHARES at about £7.99, 4.1 from 2,927 reviews, does not name a hip belt. HFX at about £16.99 adds a waist strap, and the same 89 reviews describe straps that slip unless knotted. That webbing is not the Oregon thigh pad.

When neither description is enough

ISO 11806-1, in the TÜV application of clause 4.4, treats a single shoulder strap as the minimum under 7.5 kg dry weight, except brush saws. Grass trimmers under 6 kg need not include a harness at all. At 7.5 kg and over, and for every brush saw, the clause asks for a double harness with a hip pad. Two shoulder straps do not turn a padded vest into that harness. If that is your machine, the hardware is on the heavy petrol brushcutter harness page. Hook height, once the layout matches the handle, is on the how to fit a brushcutter harness page.

Which to buy in this set

If the machine is a loop-handle line trimmer used across the body, start with a single strap. Fuwithfu is about £4.99 with no reviews. Wtirey is about £9.99 with three reviews and a Stihl modification in that sample. They are the only single-strap listings here, and neither is a proven universal fit. If the machine is a bike-handle model from the FS 70 class up, start with a double shoulder harness. The orange YOUSHARES at about £7.99 is the large-sample vest when the work is occasional and you do not need a hip belt. Move up only for a waist strap named in the bullets, or for the Oregon hip belt and named release. A wrong hook still leaves the weight in your hand, which is what a SUNMON review described.

Common questions

My bike-handle machine came with a single strap. Do I replace it?
Replace it if the machine is not an FS 55, FS 56 or FS 94, the small STIHL models whose manuals keep the supplied single strap. A single strap on a larger bike-handle shaft is the box saving a part. If the machine is an FS 55 and the original strap still fits the ring, keep that strap.
Is a double vest the same as a forestry harness?
No. A full harness, in the STIHL FS 91 manual, is what a circular saw blade requires, and it has a quick release. The ISO 11806-1 hip pad appears over 7.5 kg dry, or for a brush saw. The double vests here are shoulder harnesses. Only the Oregon bullets add a waist belt, a thigh pad and a named safety quick release, and that part is discontinued.
What does the 7.5 kg rule mean for me?
It is a dry-weight threshold in the TÜV reading of ISO 11806-1, not a guess from sore shoulders. Under 7.5 kg, a single strap is the minimum, except for brush saws. At 7.5 kg and above, the clause asks for a double harness with a hip pad. Grass trimmers under 6 kg need not include a harness. Weigh the machine as the manual states it, without fuel.
Can I use a double harness on a loop-handle edger?
You can, and you often should not. The loop handle is meant to be swept across the body on a single strap. A double vest adds buckles for a short edging job. It does not make the cut safer by itself. Use the double when you move to a bike handle, a longer session, or a blade the manual ties to a fuller harness.
Which listings in this set are single straps?
Fuwithfu B0H4RLM782 at about £4.99, with no review line, and Wtirey B0H7JFRX86 at about £9.99, with 4.6 from three reviews. Every other ASIN is a double shoulder harness. The Oregon style field says Single, and the bullets describe both shoulders. Trust the bullets, not the style word.
