Which BLACK+DECKER hedge trimmer to buy

Updated: October 2026

Three BLACK+DECKER listings do not answer the same question. One is a corded 45 cm trimmer at about £44.94. One is a 36 V tool at about £83.49 with no battery in the box. One is an 18 V listing at about £125, and its star line is not a UK sample. Which BLACK+DECKER hedge trimmer to buy depends on the stems, whether a socket can reach them, and whether you already own the right pack. The [Black+Decker hedge trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/black-and-decker-hedge-trimmer) lines the three ASINs up. This page is only the order of that decision. Start with the socket and the stems

A corded trimmer only works as far as an outdoor socket, an RCD and a lead you can keep behind you. A cordless trimmer only works if the pack is the right voltage and is in the box or already on your shelf. Which? points corded tools at a limited hedge near the house, often with a blade up to about 45 cm, and cordless tools at hedges the socket cannot reach. That is a class remark, not a runtime for these ASINs. Tooth gap is the next fork. The BEHT201 allows a 16 mm cut on a 45 cm blade. The 18 V listing states an 18 mm pitch on a 45 cm blade. The 36 V listing states a 22 mm gap, a 55 cm blade, and a saw tip claimed up to 35 mm. On the cordless amazon pages the cutting-width field copies the blade length, so 55 cm is not the gap. If the hedge is above a height you can trim with both feet on the ground, none of these three is the answer.

The corded 45 cm tool

The BEHT201-GB is the corded case: 420 W, 45 cm, 16 mm, about £44.94, and 4.5 from 1,331 amazon.co.uk reviews. All 50 saved review bodies are labelled United Kingdom. Amazon prints 240 V. The manual states 230 V, UK mains, and a guaranteed sound power of 100 dB(A). Amazon's item weight is 1.92 kg. Stop when the thickest stem is inside 16 mm and you will use a BS 1363 plug, an RCD, and a lead you can see. UK reviews praise the weight and also repeat a lead or plug that comes out. If the hedge is at the far fence, that price is the wrong saving. The corded or cordless page stays on that choice.

The 36 V bare tool

The BCHTS36B-XJ is about £83.49 for the trimmer only. The listing says the battery is not included. Seventeen UK-labelled reviews in the saved sample centre on that missing pack. An 18 V POWERCONNECT battery will not run a 36 V tool. A US 20V MAX or 40V MAX pack is a different marketing voltage. Buy this row only if a BLACK+DECKER 36 V pack and charger are already yours. BL20362-XJ was about £67.10 in one amazon.co.uk check and does not include a charger. The 90-minute claims sit on kit BCHTS3620L1-GB, not on this bare ASIN. The 36 V battery page is the shopping list.

The £125 18 V listing

The GTC1845L20-QW is about £125, 18 V, a 45 cm blade and an 18 mm pitch, with a lithium battery mentioned and no amp-hour in the saved file. The star line is 4.6 from 3,980 reviews. One of 50 saved review bodies is labelled United Kingdom. The cutting-width field says 45 cm, which repeats the blade, not the pitch. You pay more, the blade is no longer, and the stars are not a UK sample. The saved title on the amazon.co.uk URL is German.

What this page will not decide

Blade length, tooth gap, cable and battery platform are four purchases. Good Housekeeping scores for other BLACK+DECKER hedge trimmers are not scores for these three ASINs. Argos has listed a 60 cm corded BLACK+DECKER at £80. That is a different model. This page does not teach the cut. Sides, a string line and nests belong on how to use a hedge trimmer safely. A farm hedgerow in England has its own closed season, which is not a ban on every garden privet.

Common questions

Is the BEHT201 cordless?
No. The listing describes a corded trimmer at about £44.94, with 240 V and a 420 W motor on amazon.co.uk. The manual states 230 V, which is UK mains, so the two figures are a mains tool, not a battery tool. There is a lead to manage.
Does the 36 V model include a battery?
The BCHTS36B-XJ listing says the battery is not included. The saved price is about £83.49 for the trimmer only. A working outfit still needs a BLACK+DECKER 36 V pack and a charger. A check of BL20362-XJ showed about £67.10, and that listing does not include a charger.
Will an 18 V pack run the 55 cm tool?
No. The bare-tool page is a 36 V platform and says BLACK+DECKER 36 V batteries. UK 18 V POWERCONNECT packs are a different system. A US 20V MAX or 40V MAX pack is not a UK 18 V or 36 V pack under another name.
What does a 22 mm gap mean next to a 35 mm saw tip?
The 22 mm figure is the tooth gap for a normal pass. The 35 mm figure is a separate claim for the saw tip on the 36 V tool, not a promise that every tooth will eat a 35 mm branch. Do not read the amazon cutting-width field of 55 cm as either number. That field repeats the blade length.
Why is the £125 model not the automatic step up?
It is the same 45 cm class as the corded tool, at nearly three times the price. The 4.6 from 3,980 is the listing average, and one of 50 saved review bodies is labelled United Kingdom. The title on the saved URL is German, and amp-hours are not in the file.
