2.4 mm strimmer line: what to check before you buy

Updated: October 2026

The spool is down to a stump, and the next amazon.co.uk title says heavy-duty 2.4 mm strimmer line for a long list of brands. That list is not a fit certificate. Buy the diameter the head or the manual already allows, then the profile the eyelet will pass, then only the metres you will use before the nylon dries in a hot shed. Prices here are amazon.co.uk shelf prices captured on 19 October 2026. Peter F. set them out on the [2.4 mm strimmer line comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/2-4mm-strimmer-line). We did not run a lab cut. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the head, not the title

Open the manual, or look at the spool you just removed, and read the maximum line diameter before you read a brand list. A bullet that names Husqvarna, Ryobi, Echo, Stihl, Ego, Oregon, and Black & Decker advertises a standard head. It does not prove your eyelet or bump spring will take 2.4 mm. Light cordless heads supplied with about 1.6 mm are outside this category. Mow and Edge’s breakage guide says line thicker than the head can bind in the eyelet, stop the bump feed, and load a small motor. Their example is 3 mm in a head rated for 2.4 mm. The same jam happens if you put 2.4 mm into a head rated for about 1.6 mm.

Round, square, and star at the same stated 2.4 mm

Round 2.4 mm is the usual lawn-edge cord. The stated size is the width the eyelet sees. Square line is sold as a more aggressive edge, and the number on the packet is the side, not the corner. One square listing prints a diagonal of about 3.4 mm. If your eyelet only just passes round 2.4 mm, that corner can be the piece that will not feed. Star line has five edges. Oregon’s profile map, maker wording rather than a lab test, points star at a cleaner cut and square or toothed profiles at denser vegetation. Noise and walls are on the square or round 2.4 mm strimmer line page.

15 m, a season, or a long roll

A 15 m doughnut is a trial. It can be the lowest shelf price in the set and still be dear per metre once you know round 2.4 mm feeds. A season of lawn edges sits more comfortably at 60 m to 100 m. A 250 m to 360 m roll is cheap per metre only if you will use it. Nylon dries in heat and sun. A roll on a windowsill is not a bargain. Stihl’s own UK shop, on 19 October 2026, showed a shorter square pack at £15.20 including VAT. That is a different offer from the amazon.co.uk 253 m listing. Do not put the shop price on the long reel.

What the stars are not telling you

Two Oregon round packs can share one star line, and one saved text is about a 3 mm purchase. You cannot treat that shared count as proof of the short doughnut alone. The largest count whose texts match one title is still not a measured winner. A 4.8 from 12 reviews is too small to rank a brand above packs with thousands of ratings. Stars also do not tell you whether the eyelet will pass a square corner, or whether woody stems need the blade in the manual.

What to buy once the head is known

If the manual stops at about 1.6 mm, leave this set. If it allows 2.4 mm, use round for a lawn edge, square or star only when the eyelet passes the corner, and a long roll only when you will finish it and store it out of the sun. Come back to the main table when you want each length attached to its rating.

Common questions

Do shop cc tables override the manual?
No. ManoMano’s UK guide puts roughly 2.3–2.7 mm on 25–35 cc two-strokes and says a line that is too thick can slow a two-stroke so it does not lubricate properly. Yourspares puts 2.0–2.4 mm on thick grass and 2.4–3.0 mm on overgrown petrol work. Those shop tables do not match each other, and they were not a test of these packs. The figure that decides the purchase is the maximum printed for your head.
Is the square’s 2.4 mm the side or the corner?
On square cord the stated 2.4 mm is the side. ManoMano’s UK guide says the same. The corner is wider. Zeqeey is the only listing in this set that prints a diagonal, about 3.4 mm. Viabrico’s 100 m square and the Stihl 253 m reel state the side and do not print that corner, so you check the eyelet rather than copying Zeqeey’s figure onto their packs.
When is a 250 m roll the cheaper metre, and when is it waste?
It is the cheaper metre when you will finish it. Oregon round 264 m at about £31.33 is about 12 pence a metre on the stated length. It is waste when the roll sits in sun or a hot shed, because nylon dries out, and when a small garden only uses a few metres a month. Store a long roll out of the sun if you do buy one.
Why do two Oregon round packs share one star line?
The 15 m and 88 m Oregon round listings both show 4.3 from 14,156, and the 50 saved texts are the same sample, including one text about 3 mm line. Read that number as a shared pool. It is not a separate vote for each length. Compare the metres and the price, then decide which length you will use.
What should a tiny cordless head on 1.6 mm buy instead?
Buy line the manual allows, which in that case is about 1.6 mm, not a 2.4 mm reel from this set. Thicker line can bind in the eyelet and stall a small head. Yourspares and Mow and Edge both point you back to the manual when the title says heavy duty. A 2.4 mm pack does not become suitable because the price is low.
