Strimmer line keeps snapping

Updated: October 2026

You fitted a new spool, trimmed the path edge, and the cord is already a stump. Strimmer line keeps snapping for a few repeatable reasons, and a faulty reel is only one of them. Most of the time the line is hitting a hard edge, it has dried out in the shed, the eyelet is worn, or the diameter is wrong for the head. Peter F. used UK breakage guides and amazon.co.uk reviews from 19 October 2026. No breakage lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. A new 1.6 mm reel, when that is the branch you need, is on the [1.6 mm strimmer line comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/1-6mm-strimmer-line).

Where it breaks

Where the stub is tells you which check to do first. If the line disappears at the eyelet every minute or two, look at the hole before you blame the brand. A burred or oval eyelet cuts nylon at the exit. Run a fingertip around the hole with the battery off. A new spool will die in the same place until the eyelet is replaced. If it snaps in open grass, Yourspares’ breakage guide points at brittle nylon and at too much line hanging out of the head. If the line is welding inside the spool, the wind is the suspect: against the arrow, overfilled, or with one side longer than the other. Those steps live on the how to load strimmer line page.

Dried line and the 24-hour soak

Nylon goes stiff in a warm shed. STIHL UK’s advice is to soak dried nylon for at least 24 hours. Zeqeey’s listing prints the same soak. A soak is only a partial fix once the coil is old. Soak a stiff coil, then try one refill on grass, away from paving. If it still powders, replace it. Oregon’s round 1.65 mm / 1.6 mm donut has UK reviews that report snaps even after a pre-soak. That is a review report, not a lab score. If a new piece flexes, look at the edge and the eyelet before you throw the reel away.

Hard edges and light line

1.6 mm spends itself on brick, concrete, gravel, and kerbs. FEPITO’s reviews say it is fine for grass and breaks on a concrete edge. Keep the spinning tip in the grass and let the guard meet the paving. Fitting 2.4 mm to a 1.6 mm eyelet often damages the hole. That choice is on the 1.6 mm versus 2.4 mm page. If you are unsure of the diameter, use the buying guide. Wear glasses and a visor. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects wild birds and their nests, so stop if a clump might be occupied.

When to stop

Stop buying line when the head is cracked, the eyelet is sharp, or the motor smells hot on the diameter the manual names. Paid work points at the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and PUWER 1998. A domestic head in your own garden is not that job. A new 1.6 mm spool is reasonable when the eyelet is smooth, the wind is correct, and the manual still says 1.6 mm. FEPITO’s 30 m round line is the cheap grass refill, with the known limit on concrete. Do not claim any of these reels prevents hand-arm vibration.

Common questions

Why does strimmer line keep snapping?
Usually because it hits something hard, it has dried out, too much is hanging out, the eyelet is damaged, or the diameter is wrong. A bad wind, against the arrow or overfilled, snaps and tangles inside the head as well. Work through those in that order before you decide the brand is faulty. A single snap on a kerb is normal wear for 1.6 mm. A snap every few seconds on open lawn is not.
Should I soak it, or buy new line?
Soak dried nylon for at least 24 hours, which is STIHL UK’s advice, and then test it on grass away from paving. Buy new line if the coil is old, if it still fractures after a soak, or if you can see it is not the diameter on the packet. Soaking is a storage fix. It does not stop nettles or concrete from cutting thin line, and Oregon reviews in this set include snaps after a pre-soak.
What if it snaps at the eyelet every few minutes?
Inspect the eyelet with the battery off or the plug out. A burred, sharp, or oval hole cuts the line at the exit, often after someone has run an oversized cord through it. Replacing the spool alone will not help until the eyelet is smooth or renewed. If the hole is clean and the line is the right diameter, then look at dryness and at how far the tails stick out.
Can thicker line fix this?
Only when the manual lists the thicker size. On a head marked 1.6 mm, 2.4 mm is more likely to jam the feed and damage the eyelet than to give you a quiet summer. Fix the edge habit, the dried coil, and the eyelet first. Move up only if the manual really does allow 2.0 mm or 2.4 mm and the vegetation needs it.
When is the spool or the head the fault?
The spool is the likely fault when the diameter does not match the title, the line is brittle though you have just bought it, or every other cause has been ruled out. The head is the likely fault when the eyelet is damaged, the cover is cracked, or the same snap happens with a known-good 1.6 mm line wound the right way. A hot motor on the correct line is a machine fault. Stop using it.
