Wheatgrass vs cat grass plant: soft blades or sedge

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have two amazon.co.uk tabs open on wheatgrass versus a cat grass plant, and one of them is a sedge. Wheatgrass and the cereal mixes are soft seedling blades you chew through in a fortnight. Cyperus 'Zumula' is umbrella sedge, sold as a longer indoor plant, with a warning that the blades can be sharp. This page is that split, not a ranking of all seven pots. Who buys which row is on [best cat grass](/hub/houseplants/cat-grass-plant/sub/cat-grass-plant-best). Prices stay on the [cat grass plant comparison](/hub/houseplants/cat-grass-plant). Two plants, one shopping name

Wheatgrass here is the Webbox kit: 120 g of seed, not a plant on arrival. The ready pots name wheat, barley, rye and oats in a 12 cm pot. Carbeth's site sells barley, Hordeum vulgare, separately, and calls Zumula the longer-lasting plant. Zumula is Cyperus 'Zumula'. The one-pot listing is a 13 cm pot at about £11.49, height field 30 cm. The two-pot listing is about £17.99 and its height field says 13 cm. The RHS species profile can reach about 90 cm. Do not give that height to a cultivar whose listing says 30 cm. Non-toxic on the seller bullets is a claim, not a certificate.

Soft blades and a short life

Cereal seedlings are the soft chew, and the limit is time. Generic copy says up to two weeks. Cat Mommy reviews describe drying within days. The Webbox kit means a wait, then some trays that die quickly. Rye sits inside the cereal group. My Cat Grass tells customers to avoid rye and lawn seed. The ready pots name rye anyway. Wheatgrass only is the Webbox kit, and it is still seeds. The 400 ml and 500 ml clash stays on how to grow cat grass. Cereal wants damp compost and drainage, not a pot standing in deep water.

Zumula as a houseplant

Buy Zumula for a plant that can still be green next month. Carbeth calls it longer lasting than their barley. Care on the one-pot listing is bright indirect light, moist soil and trimmed older shoots. The 1,116 reviews are one pool with the two-pot ASIN. Longer lasting is not a softer chew. Zooplus Magazine says the blades can still cut the mouth or lodge in the throat. Cats Protection says a blade up the nose needs a vet. Carbeth's site says the pictured decorative pot is not included. These listings do not identify Zumula as catnip, Nepeta.

When to choose which

Choose cereal for soft blades you will resow or reorder. The kit at about £6.10 is wheatgrass seed if you can wait. A ready 12 cm pot is the nibble today, which is why the top pick is Cat Mommy's one pot rather than Zumula. The kit is best value on price and its own reviews, not because wheatgrass outlives the sedge. Choose one Zumula pot when you will keep the compost wet, out of direct sun, and watch the first chews. Skip it for soft seedlings. A blade stuck in the throat is a vet visit. PDSA says frequent vomiting needs a vet. We do not copy the line that vomiting after grass is healthy.

Common questions

Is Zumula wheatgrass?
No. Zumula in this set is Cyperus 'Zumula', a sedge in a 13 cm pot. Wheatgrass is the Webbox seed kit. The ready pots are a mix that names wheat, barley, rye and oats. Sharing the shopping words cat grass does not make the plants the same. The one-pot height field says 30 cm. The species umbrella plant on the RHS page can be far taller. Do not merge those heights.
Which one is safer to chew?
Soft cereal seedlings are the texture reviewers and the retailer magazine call a gentle nibble, and they are also the plants that fade in days or a couple of weeks. Zumula may last longer and the seller calls it non-toxic, which is a claim, not a certificate, and the same retailer magazine warns the blades can cut or lodge. Safer here means soft and short-lived, with a vet if something sticks. It does not mean either plant is risk-free.
Which one is still green next month?
Zumula is the one sold and reviewed as a plant you can keep going, if the compost stays moist and the light stays bright but indirect. A 12 cm cereal pot is on a seller clock of up to two weeks, and reviews often report less. The Webbox kit can be sown again, which is a new tray, not the same plant still green. Next month from one sowing is the sedge's job, not the wheatgrass tray's.
Can both cut a cat's mouth?
The sharp-blade warning in our sources is aimed at umbrella grass, not at young wheatgrass. Cereal can still be a problem if a seed or a dry blade lodges, which is the Cats Protection point about grass in the nose and seeds in ears, eyes or paws. Mouldy cereal is a reason to bin the tray, not a different kind of safe chew. If the mouth is cut, stop offering that plant and ask a vet.
What if a blade sticks in the throat?
Stop the cat eating and contact a vet. Cats Protection treats a blade in the nose as a veterinary problem, and a blade or seed lodged in the throat is the same kind of emergency, not a wait-and-see. Do not offer the other grass as a remedy. PDSA treats a suspected blockage as urgent. The plant choice can wait until the cat has been seen.
