Watercress vs garden cress: which seed you mean

Updated: 21 October 2026

You searched for cress and the results mixed a peppery salad leaf with the stuff that grows on cotton wool in a week. Watercress versus garden cress is a species question, not a brand question. Watercress is Nasturtium officinale. Garden cress is Lepidium sativum. Land cress and the bedding nasturtium are not stand-ins. The [watercress seeds comparison](/hub/herb-seeds/watercress-seeds) only kept packets that name watercress. Peter F. used the RHS names and those listings. Four names, four plants

Watercress is Nasturtium officinale, a perennial of wet ground with white flowers. The RHS lists it that way. It is the supermarket leaf, and it is not ready because you wet kitchen paper. Garden cress is Lepidium sativum. BBC Gardeners’ World describes the indoor cress you sow any time and cut in a week or two, including heads on moist cotton wool. The same guide says land cress and watercress are not that plant and are not as quick. Mustard and cress, plain cress, and halim belong with Lepidium. Land cress is Barbarea verna, yellow flowers on ordinary soil. The UK traditional-speciality specification says it is sometimes marketed as watercress. Bedding nasturtium is Tropaeolum majus. On a Just Seed watercress title, Nasturtium is the old genus, not a packet of orange flowers. Nasturtium alone, with a picture of a flower, is the wrong plant.

A week on kitchen paper, or a wet pot for weeks

Garden cress is the fast job: about a week or two indoors on cotton wool or moist compost, including a flat with no patio. Watercress asks for a pot in a saucer, surface sowing or a very thin cover, and about 8–18°C depending on the card. Germination notes run from about 7 days on one Aqua card to within 14 days at Thompson & Morgan. A December windowsill turned up in one UK review of a JustSeed packet. It is still not harvest in a week on cotton wool. If you want egg-and-cress this weekend, buy Lepidium. Do not use a watercress star rating to choose it. The crops do not share a score.

What this comparison threw out

Plain cress and halim pouches were in the raw search and were not kept: B0084C9JPS and B079XX787N as plain cress, B0FDKYS2H9 and B0G96D21BK as halim. They are garden cress for eating or sprouting, not failed watercress. A high star line on a cress pouch cannot crown a watercress packet. The kept set names watercress: Just Seed, Unwins Aqua, Mr Fothergill’s Aqua, Batlle’s Watercress Spring, and Nika’s Nasturtium officinale bag. Missing counts and non-UK review text do not turn that plant into Lepidium. If the pouch says halim, mustard, or cress without watercress or Nasturtium officinale, put it back.

Which one to buy for the job

Buy garden cress for a sprinkle this week, a school tray, or egg-and-cress. Buy land cress only if you want Barbarea verna on ordinary soil. Do not accept it because a seller used the watercress name. Buy watercress seed when you want the peppery leaf and you will keep compost wet for weeks. Stay on the main comparison for the eight packets that name that plant. Weekend cress heads and a perennial you will still be cutting in summer are not one purchase.

Common questions

Is mustard and cress the same as watercress?
No. Mustard and cress is the quick indoor mix built around Lepidium sativum. Watercress is Nasturtium officinale, a wet-ground perennial with white flowers. Gardeners’ World treats land cress and watercress as different from the week-long cress crop, and slower. A pouch labelled mustard and cress will not become the supermarket leaf because you stand it in a saucer.
What is halim or plain cress?
In this search they were garden-cress pouches for eating or sprouting, and they were removed rather than scored. Halim does not become watercress by being green and sharp. If the title lacks watercress and lacks Nasturtium officinale, it is a different product from every row on the main table.
Why does a watercress packet say Nasturtium?
Because that is the old genus name for watercress. Just Seed prints it next to the word watercress, and one listing prints Nasturtium officinale in full. The bedding flower is Tropaeolum majus. Nasturtium plus watercress can be right. Nasturtium plus a picture of an orange flower is the other plant.
Is land cress a stand-in?
No. Land cress, Barbarea verna, grows on soil and has yellow flowers. The UK watercress product specification says it is often sold wrongly as watercress. You can grow it on purpose under its own name. You should not accept it when the recipe or the bag you liked was true watercress.
Which one is ready in a week on kitchen paper?
Garden cress. Gardeners’ World puts the cut at about a week or two on moist cotton wool or compost, indoors, at any time of year. Watercress is not on that timetable. Do not promise yourself watercress leaves five days after sowing, and do not rank watercress packets by how fast a cress head finishes.
Which one needs a wet pot for weeks?
Watercress. The domestic method UK seed firms describe is a pot in a saucer, flushed so the water does not go stale, not a cotton-wool disc and not a livestock ditch. Use the how-to for depth and temperature only after the packet names Nasturtium officinale. If the job is egg-and-cress with children, buy garden cress and skip that sow.
