Are bamboo seeds hardy in the UK?

Updated: 21 October 2026

You want a clump outside, and you have read that bamboo is illegal in the way Japanese knotweed is. Those are two different questions. The only fully named species here, Dendrocalamus strictus, tolerates about -5°C for short periods. Bamboo is not on the Schedule 9 list for England and Wales, and a runner can still be a nuisance. The packet table is the [bamboo seeds comparison](/hub/herb-seeds/bamboo-seeds). This page is the winter and the legal distinction. Peter F. used the UK listings, the statute and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors notes, with no outdoor trial. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Calcutta bamboo and a British winter

SAFLAX sells Dendrocalamus strictus as 50 seeds at £4.55, or with coconut fibre at £5.25. The maker's English page says it takes only short periods down to about -5°C, and that tub plants should overwinter warm and bright. Plants For A Future lists it as UK zone 9, not a typical inland winter in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. A clumping habit does not add hardiness. The listings print 20 cm beside a claim of 5–6 m in temperate regions. Neither figure is a UK survival claim. A first-year seedling stays in a bright room.

Packets with no species have no hardiness

A colour title cannot be given an RHS hardiness rating, because a rating belongs to a species or a cultivar, not to the word purple. The punikondra, kondracho and Evanuha colour packets, from £8.99 to £9.99, do not name a genus. Evanuha's Fargesia packets name a clumping genus and stop, so you cannot look up an H number. The Phyllostachys packet names a running genus and stops, which tells you about spread more than about frost. Timor Bambusa lako is a species the listing does not describe for a British winter, and a title that mixes Phyllostachys heterocycla with Bambusa does not settle which plant you would rate. Year round and indoor, outdoor on a 20-seed purple listing are marketplace fields, not a zone. Until a seedling is identified, the safe place is a pot you can carry inside.

Not illegal, and not the same as knotweed

Bamboo is not listed in the plant table of Schedule 9 to the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as it applies in England and Wales. Japanese knotweed is listed. Scotland's schedule was not checked species by species here, so the sentence stays with England and Wales. The Housing Ombudsman, in Peabody Trust decision 202215374, says planting bamboo is not restricted under that Act, and still leaves room for encroachment to be argued as a nuisance. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors says there is no bamboo-specific statute, and that private nuisance can still apply. Rhizomes under a path or a neighbour's garden can still be your problem.

Selling a house that already has bamboo

The Law Society's notes on the TA6 form, sixth edition, show a question aimed at Japanese knotweed. They do not show a bamboo tick-box. Do not answer the knotweed question as if bamboo were the same plant. You still must not deny a dispute, or damage, that you know about. A neighbour's complaint or a survey note about rhizomes is a fact for the form and for your solicitor. RICS is clear that the lack of a knotweed-style rule is not the same as no risk on a sale. If culms are already under a path or across a boundary, the next step is a surveyor or a contractor who can identify the genus, not another seed packet. Calcutta bamboo from a new sowing will not stand in for a screen in most gardens.

Common questions

Will Calcutta bamboo live outside in most of the UK?
No. Dendrocalamus strictus is described by the maker as not truly frost-hardy, with only short periods to about -5°C, and Plants For A Future places it in UK zone 9. That is a mild coastal or frost-free spot, not a normal winter in most of Britain. A clumping habit does not change the temperature. Keep a seedling indoors for the first winter, somewhere warm and bright, and do not use the listing's 20 cm height field as a plan for outdoors.
Are the colour packets hardy?
You cannot say. They do not name a species, so they have no RHS hardiness rating to look up. Green, black, red, yellow, purple and blue on these listings are shop colours. Fargesia without a species is only a clumping hint. Phyllostachys without a species is only a running hint. Either way, an unidentified seedling stays in a pot you can move.
Is bamboo illegal in the UK?
Planting bamboo is not banned under the Schedule 9 list that names Japanese knotweed in England and Wales. The Housing Ombudsman has said planting is not restricted by that Act. It is still a bad idea to put an unnamed or running plant where rhizomes can reach a neighbour, because nuisance law is separate from the wildlife schedule. Illegal and unwise are not the same word.
Is it Japanese knotweed in law?
No. Knotweed is on Schedule 9. Bamboo is not. Knotweed waste is controlled in a way RICS says bamboo waste is not. The plants are also different to identify. The overlap is social and practical: both can alarm a buyer, and both can lead to arguments about encroachment. You do not fill in a knotweed answer by describing a bamboo clump.
Do you have to declare bamboo when you sell?
The TA6 notes point the specific question at Japanese knotweed, not at bamboo. There is no bamboo box to tick in that explanation. You do have to answer honestly about disputes and about damage you know of. If bamboo has already caused a complaint or a survey note, say so. Silence because it is not knotweed is how a true dispute gets denied.
Where should a tender seedling spend winter?
In a bright place that stays well above the short -5°C limit, which for Calcutta bamboo means a room rather than an unheated shed in much of the UK. The maker's line for tub plants is warm and bright. Do not stand a first-year pot outside after the first frost warning. A nursery plant of a hardy cultivar is the route if the culms must stay out all year.
