One way mirror window film buying guide for UK glass

Updated: October 2026

You want the blind up in the daytime so the room is usable, and you do not want every passer-by looking in at the sofa. A one way mirror window film buying guide has to start there, before any star rating. This page is the decision order for the nine silver rolls in our [Mirror film comparison](/hub/hedges-and-privacy-screens/mirror-film): whether film is the right job, then the width of the glass, then static cling or adhesive, then how dark the listing actually is. Prices are the amazon.co.uk shelf prices in our snapshot of 20 October 2026. We did not fit the film in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Is mirror film the right job?

Buy this film for daytime privacy with a view out. The silver side faces the street. When the pavement is brighter than the room, people outside see a mirror and you can still see them. The Window Film Company puts it plainly: the brighter side becomes the mirror, and there is no coating that lets you see out while hiding a lit room at night. Leave the category if a planning condition asks for obscure glazing. GOV.UK's permitted-development guidance says obscure glazing does not include one-way glass. If the job is a street-facing pane in daylight, and you already own a curtain for the evening, the next cut is the glass. Most UK windows are sealed units. Read mirror film on double glazing before you order, then come back to width.

Measure the glass, then the roll

Measure the pane, not the frame. A roll chosen against the plastic will stop short of the sightline. All nine rolls are 200 cm long. The widths are 40 cm, 44.5 cm or 90 cm. The two Zindoo listings are 40 cm, at about £5.61 and about £8.99. A 60 cm casement will not take 40 cm in one piece. The middle width is 44.5 cm, from about £6.99 to about £9.99. The 90 cm roll is only the adhesive Rabbitgoo at about £28.99, and only when the glass is wider than 44.5 cm. Tools and a second person belong on how to apply one way mirror window film, not in the width decision.

Static cling or adhesive

Split the nine rows by the fixing the listing actually prints, not by the brand name. No-glue static cling, fitted with water, is Lifetree, FILMGOO, Haton, DOWELL, and the Rabbitgoo row with a T-scraper and spray bottle. Cling is still a wet fit. Adhesive is the Rabbitgoo 44.5 cm row at about £9.99, the Rabbitgoo 90 cm row at about £28.99, and the Zindoo with tools at about £8.99. If the inventory will be checked, refuse adhesive unless the landlord has agreed it. The cheap Zindoo at about £5.61 prints both peel and stick and static cling, then an adhesive layer. You cannot tell which film will arrive. The Rabbitgoo name covers three listings that do not share a fixing type. Read the model line on the page you are about to order.

How dark the listing really is

Only FILMGOO prints a visible-light figure: 12.5% on the bullet. That is the seller's number. We have not measured it, and none of the other eight rows print a comparable figure, so you cannot line the set up from darkest to lightest. If you need a stated darkness, that is the only row that gives you one. A missing number is not a promise that the film is light. UV and infrared percentages on the other bullets are the same kind of claim. Do not buy on a percentage you cannot source to a test. DOWELL's 4.3 from 4,823 reviews mixes rainbow, frosted and snowflake film with one-way comments.

Read the glass note before you stop

Read the glass note on the row you have chosen. The cheap Zindoo says smooth single-layer glass only. The Zindoo with tools says it is not recommended on double glazing left in the sun. FILMGOO says avoid frosted, textured, patterned or damaged glass. The adhesive Rabbitgoo rows say check special glass. Silence on DOWELL, Lifetree, Haton and the static-cling Rabbitgoo is not a clearance. If you cannot say what the inner pane is, stop and ask before you wet the glass.

Common questions

Is mirror film the right product if I want privacy after dark?
No. With the lights on, the room is the brighter side and the mirror faces inwards, so people outside can see in. Every kept listing in this set already tells you to use curtains or a blind at night. If night privacy is the job, look at frosted film as a different product, not at a darker silver roll.
What is the difference between static cling and peel-and-stick on these rolls?
Static cling uses water and is meant to peel off, which is the renter case. That is Lifetree, FILMGOO, Haton, DOWELL, and the Rabbitgoo row with tools. Peel-and-stick has a backing and an adhesive layer. That is both adhesive Rabbitgoo rows and the Zindoo sold with a knife. Adhesive is harder to reposition once it grabs.
Why does one Zindoo listing say both cling and adhesive?
The about £5.61 row, 40 by 200 cm, prints peel and stick and static cling in the installation line, then describes an adhesive layer in a later bullet. Those statements cannot both be the film in the packet. Treat the page as unclear and choose a row whose fixing line says one thing.
How dark is 12.5% visible light transmission, and who else prints that number?
Only FILMGOO prints it, and it is the seller's bullet, not an independent UK test. On that claim, most visible light is blocked. Reviewers say the inside view is softer and the room is dimmer. No other kept roll prints a visible-light percentage, so the UV figures elsewhere are not a substitute.
Can I use this film to meet a planning condition, or on a car's front side window?
No to both. GOV.UK says obscure glazing does not include one-way glass, so a silver film does not satisfy a level-3 condition. Ask the local planning authority if a condition is already on the house. These rolls are also not a legal car tint. A house-film bullet is not a pass for a windscreen or a front side window.
