How to insulate a roller shutter box

Updated: 22 October 2026

The inspection lid already unscrews, and the lining is in the house. The job left is how to insulate a roller shutter box so the curtain, the belt and any motor cable still move after the lid goes back. Run a full cycle before the screws stay in. Which pack to buy sits on the [roller shutter insulation buying guide](/hub/heating/roller-shutter-insulation/sub/roller-shutter-insulation-buying-guide). A 13 mm mat that would touch the raised curtain belongs on [insulation for a narrow roller shutter box](/hub/heating/roller-shutter-insulation/sub/roller-shutter-insulation-narrow-boxes). The [roller shutter insulation comparison](/hub/heating/roller-shutter-insulation) sets the packs side by side. These notes follow Passipedia, AV Technical and ROMA. Open the box without damaging the window

Take the screws out before you pull on the lid. Paint often bridges the joint, so score that line, then ease the cover. A review for ASIN B01M12RO34 describes adhesive on the curtain and in the guide if a loose strip drops in early. Stop if the cover will not move once the screws are out and the paint is cut. A wet lid, a listed building, or a box that opens only by cutting the wall is no longer a weekend job. If the axle, the motor or the cavity has to come apart, call a fitter.

Power, dust and the fat roll

A tube motor means a 230 V box. SeceuroShield and Titan say isolate the mains before maintenance. Prove the circuit dead before your hands go near a cable. If you cannot name the breaker, get an electrician. Lower the curtain to measure the cheeks, as Schellenberg's side-panel note says, and check thickness with the curtain fully raised, because the wound roll is fattest then. If the piece already touches the raised roll, stop and use the narrow-box page rather than compressing the mat.

Fix the lining so it can still come off the curtain

Self-adhesive rolls grab on first contact, and you cannot reposition a piece once it has touched. Peel a short length, press it onto a face that stays still, and keep the rest of the backing on. Hold the loose tail away from the curtain and the side guide. A flap on the curtain is the failure recorded on B01M12RO34. On a rigid mat, use non-expanding foam and keep it off the shaft, the belt and the coil. Westfalia warns that highly expanding foam can glue the shaft and the belt. These foams are not cavity barriers.

Close up and test

Seal the long lid joint, not the slot the belt uses to leave. Passipedia treats the belt hole as a leak that remains. Foam across the exit slot sticks the belt or notches the curtain. Run a full cycle before the screws stay in. A labouring motor, a belt that walks off, or a lining that moves with the roll means something is touching, so remove that piece. If you would have to pull the axle or the motor to reach the rub, stop.

Common questions

Do I raise or lower the curtain before I measure?
Lower the curtain when you measure the side cheeks, which is what Schellenberg's side-panel note describes. Raise it fully when you check whether the lining clears the roll, because the wound curtain is fattest then. Doing only one of those leaves a gap that looks right and then rubs. If the raised roll already fills the box, use the narrow-box page instead of trimming the mat until almost nothing is left.
How do I stop the self-adhesive roll grabbing the curtain?
Peel a short strip of backing and stick it to a face that does not move. Leave the rest of the backing on until that strip is down. Reviews of these rolls say the glue will not let you lift and re-place a sheet once it has grabbed. Hold the loose tail clear of the curtain and the side guide. If glue lands on the curtain, lift it before it cures rather than running the shutter in the hope that it frees itself.
Can I use expanding foam?
Use non-expanding foam only as a bead on a rigid mat, and keep it off the shaft, the belt and the coil. Highly expanding foam can glue the shaft and the belt, which is Westfalia's warning. Foam in the coil can jam the shutter and overload a motor. These products are not a cavity barrier, so do not fill the void to chase a draught. A gap of a few millimetres needs the narrow-box page, not more foam.
What do I do about the belt hole?
Leave the belt hole open. Passipedia treats it as a small leak that remains after a careful job, and plugging it will stick the strap or notch the curtain. Seal the long joint of the inspection lid instead. Any brush at that slot still has to let the belt travel. If you cannot see the belt running clear while you hold the lid in place, leave the screws out.
When do I isolate the power?
Isolate the mains before you reach into a box with a tube motor, and prove that circuit is dead. SeceuroShield and Titan say the same before maintenance on door shutters, though those sheets are not a window-lining guide. This page does not cover motor terminals. A belt-only window has no motor circuit to isolate. If you cannot name the breaker, stop and get an electrician rather than working live at 230 V.
When is this no longer a DIY fit?
Stop if the axle, the motor or the cavity has to be opened, and stop for a listed building, a wet lid, or a cover that stays shut after the screws and the paint are dealt with. ROMA sends complex or older systems to a specialist. If the lining touches the raised roll however you place it, do not sand it paper-thin. Use the narrow-box page, or book a fitter.
