How to install a radiator fan

Updated: 22 October 2026

The parcel arrives and you want the fan on the radiator before tonight’s heating cycle, without drilling a landlord’s wall or opening the wet system. A radiator booster is an electrical accessory. It does not connect to pipework and it is not Gas Safe work. If the radiator never gets hot, fix that first. This guide covers prep, mounting, power and upkeep. Kit size is in the [radiator fan buying guide](/hub/heating/radiator-fan/sub/radiator-fan-buying-guide). Specs are on the [radiator fan comparison](/hub/heating/radiator-fan). Peter F. checked the listings and public UK sources. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you start

Measure the usable width and compare it with the band on the box. SpeedComfort mono, duo and trio sets expect different spans. A fridge magnet that sticks firmly suggests a steel face. If it slides off, use feet or hooks rather than forcing magnets. Clean the gap and the face. UK reviews blame dust for wobble, noise and a weak hold. Wipe the fins when the system is off and cool. The fan does not replace the thermostatic radiator valve. Leave that setting to your normal routine unless an engineer has advised otherwise.

Magnetic under-mount on a double panel

Most mains modular fans and many rechargeable bars mount under the front panel of a double radiator, pulling air up through the gap. SpeedComfort-style units clip together, then sit on magnets against the steel face. That is tool-free in ideal conditions. Align the fan so airflow points into the room, not into the skirting board. Rechargeable bars often sit on the top edge with magnets straddling the radiator profile. Follow the diagram on your listing, because white-label bars vary. If the unit rocks, reposition it or add the rubber pads supplied. Do not overtighten anything against the fins.

Narrow panels, convectors and feet

A slim type-21 or single panel may leave a SpeedComfort unit hanging below the bottom rail. Some kits have adaptor pieces or slider positions. UK buyers mention ordering an adaptor after a mono hung too low. If the listing offers a narrow-radiator accessory, buy it with the fan rather than packing the gap yourself. On a single steel panel, some owners use a top-mount rechargeable bar because under-mount clearance is tight. Check photos from UK reviewers with a similar shape. A column or convector without a flat magnetic face needs the feet or wire hooks in a mains kit. Feet sit in the trough and aim air upward. Magnets on painted aluminium or stainless can let go mid-season. A towel rail is a poor host unless the listing shows that shape, because airflow hits the fabric.

Power, cables and airflow

Plug a mains adapter into a nearby socket, not an overloaded block wedged behind the radiator. Route the cable so it does not cross a doorway. UK reviewers mention trip hazards when a lead dangles at ankle height. Keep adapters and USB chargers out of wet zones. These boosters are not bathroom IP-rated unless the listing says so. Charge a rechargeable bar fully before the first heating day. A USB lead left powered behind the radiator works, and it is no longer cordless. Corded USB-C models such as MERTTURM need the same routing. On first run, use manual mode to check airflow direction, then enable auto if fitted. Listen on each speed before you sleep with it on. Leave the thermostatic radiator valve to do its job. The fan does not balance downstairs against upstairs. If a sofa blocks the face, moving it a few centimetres often beats any booster. In a bay window, closed curtains must not drape over the fan head.

Upkeep, removal and when to call someone

Vacuum fin dust a few times a season. Do not cover the fan or the radiator with long curtains afterwards. Blocked airflow can overheat the panel locally. In summer, unplug a mains kit or lift a magnetic bar off and store it dry. Magnets leave no drill marks, but cable clips can mark paint when you move out. Replace a damaged adapter or a frayed USB lead. Call an electrician for fixed wiring. Call a Gas Safe registered engineer for boiler or radiator water problems, not for fitting the fan.

Common questions

Where exactly does the unit sit?
Usually under the front panel on a double steel radiator, so the fans pull air up through the fin gap and into the room. Many rechargeable bars sit magnetically on the top edge instead. Check the diagram for your kit, because white-label bars are not all the same shape. Airflow should point into the room, not into the skirting.
Do I need tools?
Typically no for a magnetic SpeedComfort-style install on a flat steel panel. Feet kits may need a screwdriver for stabilisers. If a mono hangs below a slim type-21 rail, order the manufacturer adaptor rather than packing the gap with improvised spacers. A magnet that will not hold is a fit problem, not a tightening problem.
Should I clean the radiator first?
Yes. Dust in the fin gap is the most common avoidable fault in UK owner reports. It reduces airflow and can unbalance a magnetic mount so the unit wobbles or ticks. Wipe the fins when the system is off and cool, before you clip the fans on.
Can I leave it on overnight?
Many mains owners do through winter. Use auto mode so the fans stop when the radiator cools, rather than blowing room air all night. Rechargeables may need a daytime charge if the battery fades on a high speed. Listen on each speed before you sleep with it running. Noise tolerance is personal.
How do I avoid a cable trip hazard?
Route the lead along the skirting with clips, or use a socket behind furniture. Do not run it across a hall carpet or leave it dangling at ankle height. Plug the low-voltage adapter into a wall socket, not an overloaded block jammed behind the hot panel. Keep chargers out of wet rooms.
