Panel heater in a bathroom

Updated: 22 October 2026

You read IP24 or bathroom safe on a listing and pictured a plug beside the bath. A bathroom panel heater needs more than a splash line: zone size, socket distance, RCD protection, and whether the heater is fixed. This page walks through UK bathroom zones, then which listings in the [panel radiators comparison](/hub/heating/panel-radiators) actually print an IP claim. Peter F. checked those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Zones, in one measurement

SELECT’s pocket guide to BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 summarises Section 701. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower basin. Zone 1 runs above the bath or shower tray to the fixed shower head or 2.25 m, whichever is lower, out to the outer edge. Zone 2 reaches 0.6 m beyond zone 1 and up to 2.25 m. With no tray, zone 2 may not form the same way. Zones 1 and 2 need at least IPX4 when the heater is fixed and the instructions allow that place. IPX4 means splashes from any direction, not immersion. Other sockets stay at least 2.5 m from the zone 1 boundary, and the circuit needs 30 mA RCD protection. Electrical Safety First says use a registered electrician and do not use an extension lead. In England and Wales, notifiable bathroom wiring is Part P. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own routes.

What IP24 does and does not say

An IP rating describes the enclosure, not the installation. A 13 A plug does not move a heater outside zone 2 if it stands there. Several listings claim IP24 or IPX4 and still ship with a UK plug on a 1.4 m or 1.5 m cable. The Devola DVS2000W claims IP24, with a 1.5 m plug from the right. The DVPW1500WH and DVPW2000B claim IP24, with a wall kit and feet. The MYLEK MY283610 title says IPX4 and the features line also says IP24. The MYLEK 285300C mentions an electrician and prints no IP number. TCP Smart, DMD Collective and the Adam Solis show no IP line. The NRG wet panel has no electrical IP rating because it is not mains powered. None of those lines permits a plug in a shaver socket in zone 2. Some fixed panels must be hard-wired. Model lines differ within one brand, so read the instructions for that ASIN.

Plug, socket, and extension lead

A moulded plug does not cancel the zone boundary. A lead from a landing socket does not move the heater outside zone 2 if the appliance sits there. Electrical Safety First advises against extension leads for this job. Bathroom circuits need 30 mA RCD protection. If the board predates that, the upgrade is part of the work. Part P in England and Wales means a competent person, or a building-control notice, for most fixed wiring in the room. A dry hallway wall outside the zoned volume can be a different job from a socket heater inside zone 2. That layout belongs with an electrician and the SELECT diagram.

A wet panel is a different question

The NRG vertical radiator connects to central-heating water. It has no IPX4 line because it is not mains powered. You still need sound pipework and TRVs that will not leak onto electrics below. A towel radiator on the wet circuit is the usual bathroom heat when the boiler already runs. The hourly cost of a plug-in panel sits on electric panel heater vs central heating. An IP24 line plus a plug is not zone permission on its own.

Common questions

What is zone 2 in a UK bathroom?
The volume within 0.6 m of zone 1 horizontally, and up to 2.25 m in height, in the SELECT summary of BS 7671 Section 701. It is not the whole room by default. Zone 1 is above the bath or shower tray, out to the outer edge, up to the fixed shower head or 2.25 m, whichever is lower.
Does IP24 mean I can use a plug?
It is an enclosure rating if the product was tested that way. It does not override zone rules, the 2.5 m socket distance, or manufacturer instructions that forbid a plug on a fixed model. IPX4 means splashes from any direction. It does not mean the heater can be submerged.
Which listings in this set actually claim IP24 or IPX4?
The Devola DVS2000W, DVPW1500WH and DVPW2000B claim IP24. The MYLEK MY283610 title says IPX4 and the features line also says IP24. The MYLEK 285300C has electrician wording and no IP number. TCP Smart, DMD Collective and the Adam Solis print no IP line.
Can I run an extension lead from the landing?
Electrical Safety First advises against extension leads in bathrooms. A lead from a landing socket is not a compliant workaround for the zone limits. If the heater sits inside zone 2, the lead does not move it outside that zone.
Who is allowed to hard-wire a heater in a bathroom?
A registered electrician who is competent for the building-control rules where you live. In England and Wales, notifiable fixed wiring in a bathroom is Part P work. Scotland and Northern Ireland use their own control systems. Do not treat an England sentence as the rule for every UK nation.
Does a steel panel radiator need an IP rating?
Not for electricity. The NRG wet panel has no electrical IP rating because it is not mains powered. It still needs correct water fittings, and it must not leak onto live equipment below the radiator.
What if the shower has no tray?
The zone layout changes. Zone 2 may not form as it would around a tray or basin. SELECT notes that the arrangement depends on the room. Get a site-specific design rather than copying a standard bath diagram.
Does Part P apply in the same way in every UK nation?
No. England and Wales use Part P for notifiable domestic electrical work, including fixed wiring in a bathroom. Scotland and Northern Ireland follow their own building-control systems. A competent person still has to match the rules for that nation.
