Infrared picture heater buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have spotted a panel that looks like wall art until you read the watt line, and you want to know what actually matters before you pay on amazon.co.uk. A mains infrared picture heater is still a direct electric room heater: the print changes what you see, not the physics. The [infrared picture heater comparison](/hub/heating/infrared-picture-heater) holds the four kept listings in one table. This guide is the method: watts, controls, the face, IP marks and the plug. Room-by-room names sit on [best infrared picture heater](/hub/heating/infrared-picture-heater/sub/infrared-picture-heater-best). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

An infrared picture heater is a flat radiant panel with a printed front, roughly five centimetres deep on the three Klarstein files. It hangs like a large frame, faces the people and surfaces in its line of sight, and runs from a mains lead. It is not a medical device and not a gas boiler replacement. The Centre for Sustainable Energy and the Energy Saving Trust both treat electric room heat as ordinary electric heat: useful where you already heat another way, expensive if you expect it to carry the whole home instead of gas. You are buying rated watts, a control that still works when the Wi-Fi drops, a print you can inspect inside the returns window, and a lead that matches a UK socket if you plan to plug it in yourself. Peter F. checked the stored amazon.co.uk files. There was no lab test.

Watts against the room

Seller copy ties 350 W to “up to 7 m²”, 500 W to 10 m², and 700 W to “about 10–15 m²”. Those are lines on the file, not a guarantee. Retailer guides often use a 50–80 W/m² band as a rule of thumb. It is not a British Standard. Use it only to sense-check the seller line. A small bedroom that already has central heating might suit the 350 W Blue Wave if you sit in front of that wall. Step up to 500 W when the metre claim and the wall both grow, such as an 80 cm print you face from a sofa. Choose 700 W when you need the 120 cm face and accept the weight. Poor insulation, a high ceiling or an open doorway means more watts or a different heat source. The £128 Art2Heat Mountain file prints no wattage, no voltage, and a tower rather than a flat plate. Do not borrow watts from other Art2Heat ASINs.

Thermostat, app, and the button you can still press

All three Klarstein files claim a thermostat and a Wi-Fi app. None of the spec tables name a handheld remote, and the 500 W file does not answer whether the panel works without the app. Decide whether you can set a temperature on the unit itself, or whether you depend on a phone. An app is convenient for scheduling. It is not a substitute for a failed update or a guest network. If the listing is silent, read the questions on amazon.co.uk before you rely on it. A thermostat spends less time at full power. It does not change the unit rate.

What an hour of heat costs

Running cost follows watts and time, not the ink. On the Ofgem price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026, the average direct debit unit rate is 26.32 p/kWh. Full power is about 9 p an hour at 350 W, about 13 p at 500 W, and about 18 p at 700 W, before the 54.83 p daily standing charge. A thermostat spends less. These figures are arithmetic, not your bill. Electricity still costs roughly four times gas per unit for whole-house heat, so this suits a room you already heat occasionally. amazon.co.uk prices here run from about £128 for the unwattaged Art2Heat to roughly £173–£255 for the Klarstein prints. Klarstein’s own UK shop has shown a 700 W picture model at £174.99 at times, so compare the live file.

Common questions

Are the seller’s square metres a guarantee?
No. They are a single line on the listing. Your ceiling height, glazing and how long the door stays open change the load. Treat the claim as a hint, then buy watts that match how you use the room.
Do I need a thermostat, or is the app enough?
You want both a sensible default on the unit and app scheduling if you use it. If the listing does not say the panel works without Wi-Fi, assume you need to verify that before you rely on it.
Will a picture panel cut my bill in half?
Do not trust shop percentages. Direct electric heat is still direct electric heat. A picture face does not change the unit rate.
What if the lead is not a UK 13 A plug?
Do not use a travel adaptor as a permanent fix. Plan for an electrician to fit a proper BS 1363 plug with the correct fuse, or for hard-wired installation where regulations allow.
Why does one £128 listing show no wattage?
That Art2Heat file does not state power or flat-panel dimensions in the spec. Without watts, you cannot size the room or compare running cost.
What should I check about the print before the returns window closes?
Unpack, hang it temporarily, and view the face in your light. If colour or flatness is wrong compared with the listing, act within the returns period while your consumer rights still apply.
