Electric heater buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You open amazon.co.uk in October and the first page mixes fan heaters, oil-filled radiators and slim panels. An electric heater buying guide is the order of decisions before you open a product tab: what job you need, how many watts you will draw, and which controls change daily use. The [heater comparison](/hub/heating/heater) holds twelve plug-in fan and ceramic fan heaters only, not oil-filled and not fixed to the wall. Peter F. checked those listings and public UK sources. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What this category is

A portable fan heater or ceramic fan heater is for fast heat while you are in the room. Air moves over a wire element or a PTC ceramic block, so you feel warmth within minutes. Compact pedestals such as the Warmlite WL44002 and Amazon Basics DQ075 sit at the cheap end. Towers from Fitabok, Minthouz, LEBKOVL and Dreo add a remote, oscillation or a thermostat, depending on the row. An oil-filled radiator stores heat in fluid and can keep warming after switch-off. Infrared panels are another aisle. One evening in a closed room buys speed and portability, not silent residual warmth. Sleep limits are on fan heater bedroom.

Wattage and the hourly cost

Titles claim 1,500 W, 1,800 W or 2,000 W, and several heat-output fields disagree. Warmlite WL44001 prints 1,000 W in the attribute table while the title says 2,000 W. Minthouz lists 1,500 W against a 2,000 W headline. Two Dreo towers show 35°C where watts should be. Cost follows the power you draw, not an energy-efficient label. At the Ofgem average of 26.32 pence per kWh for 1 October to 31 December 2026 (Direct Debit, England, Scotland and Wales), full 2 kW is about 52.6 pence per hour before standing charges. A 1,500 W setting is about 39.5 pence. Northern Ireland is outside that cap. At equal wattage, ceramic and a wire element cost the same per hour. Worked examples are on fan heater running cost.

Controls that change daily use

A thermostat stops a 2 kW blast once the room can cycle near a set point. Check that the listing names a thermostat or ECO, then read what the fan does at that point. On the Fitabok YND-2000C, a UK review says it drops to fan-only and keeps the fan running. A timer can end a session while you are awake. It does not make overnight use acceptable. Dreo DR-HSH003 and DR-HSH025 name a remote. The white DR-HSH026 title does not. Oscillation helps a living room and can disturb a bedroom pre-heat. Warmlite and Amazon Basics advertise high and low. High still means the higher wattage. Trust a low setting only if reviews show it really draws less.

Plug, listing conflicts, and when to pause

UK mains are nominally 230 V. A heater for a BS 1363 socket should arrive with a UK 3-pin plug under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Electrical Safety First says plug into the wall, keep at least one metre from curtains and bedding, and skip an extension lead on a high draw. Pause when the listing conflicts with itself. Minthouz S760 lists voltage as 120.0. LEBKOVL YND-2000C lists the power source as battery powered on a 2,000 W title. WGOE uses model string ML-9001, which is on an OPSS report for a short earth pin. That notice’s Amazon identifiers do not match ASIN B0HCZKY9QR. Inspect the plug on arrival. A bathroom room-type is not an IP rating, and an ordinary portable with no IP line does not belong in a BS 7671 wet zone. Review volume is evidence weight: WL44002 at 4.0 from 14,122 ratings is not the same sample as WGOE at 4.9 from 27. DR-HSH026 and DR-HSH006 share review text.

A short checklist before you buy

Name the job first: a quick blast, one room for the evening, or a desk. Check the title against the heat-output row, and look for tip-over and overheat cut-outs in the listing. WL44002 names overheat and does not name tip-over. Amazon Basics names both. If voltage, power source or the plug looks wrong, pause before you unbox.

Common questions

Fan heater or oil-filled radiator for one room?
Choose a fan or ceramic fan heater when you want heat in minutes and you will switch it off when you leave. Choose an oil-filled radiator from another category when you want quieter warmth that continues after switch-off, and you can accept a slower start. That second choice matters more if you were hoping to leave heat running at bedtime. A fan heater in this set is the fast, portable option, not residual warmth.
How many watts do I need for a small bedroom?
A common UK rule of thumb is about 100 W per square metre for quick electric heat, which implies about 1 kW to 1.5 kW for a typical small bedroom with the door closed. In this set, the Warmlite WL44001 low setting and several 1,500 W towers sit in that band. Pre-heat while you are awake, then switch off before sleep. Treat 100 W per square metre as a rule of thumb, not a heat-loss calculation for your room.
Can I trust the heat-output row on amazon.co.uk?
Trust it when it agrees with the title and with what owners describe. Where they diverge, budget for the setting you will actually select, and note the conflict before you buy. Warmlite WL44001, Minthouz and two Dreo towers in this set each show a wattage or temperature field that does not match the headline. The nameplate and the control you use beat a single attribute cell.
Is a remote or oscillation worth paying for?
Pay for a remote if the heater will sit where you cannot reach the controls, which is common with a tower across a living room. Pay for oscillation if you heat a shared space and want the airflow to move. Skip both if you only need a short blast near a desk and you want to spend less. The Warmlite WL44002 and Amazon Basics rows are in this set for that simpler job. The white Dreo DR-HSH026 title does not name a remote.
What does ECO mode actually do on a fan heater?
ECO usually limits power or cycles the element to hold a rough temperature. It does not halve the bill by itself. You still pay for every minute the element is drawing its set wattage, and a fan that keeps spinning after the set point can stay audible. Read recent reviews for whether ECO drops the heater to fan-only. Fitabok owners describe that pattern on the YND-2000C.
When should I choose a different category entirely?
Shop outside this fan-heater comparison if you need a bathroom zone, overnight unattended warmth, a replacement for whole-house central heating, or a heater fixed to the wall. Bathroom zones and fixed wiring are a job for a registered electrician where the rules require it. An ordinary portable with no IP rating does not become a bathroom heater because the listing names that room.
