How to fit an EMKE heated towel rail

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have one of the three EMKE rails on the way, and the listing says brackets inside, valves not included. That split is where DIY jobs stall: pipes that do not centre, a bleed that never clears, or a 16.1 kg flat panel on a wall that will not hold water weight. This guide walks the sequence for UTR1050S1A, UTR1250S1A and UFTR1250S1A on a wet central-heating circuit. Compare models on the [Emke radiator](/hub/heating/emke-radiator) table. Nothing here replaces the manufacturer's instructions if EMKE supplies them in the carton. We did not find a public drilling template for these model numbers. Peter F. used the listing files. What is in the box and what you still buy

All three listings include wall brackets and exclude radiator valves. You need a pair of 15 mm valves, often G1/2 inch on EMKE rails elsewhere, bought separately. Valve shape follows how pipes arrive, not the word Straight in the colour field. Pipes rising from the floor usually suit straight-pattern valves. Pipes coming out of the wall often suit angled valves. Your existing rail is the best clue on a like-for-like swap. Budget PTFE tape or paste, an adjustable spanner, a bleed key and a cloth. The rail ships dry. Drain part of the system, or isolate and drop pressure, before you break into live pipes. If you cannot drain safely, stop before brackets touch plaster.

Pipes and the measurement these listings skip

Pipe centres are the centre-to-centre distance between flow and return, measured in millimetres along the wall. A few millimetres off can mean new tails or a reroute. This comparison marks centres as unknown for all three ASINs. A longer block on the straight 1,200 mm page has been seen to mention G1/2 and a wall-to-centre range beside a weight that disagrees with the card. Measure your wall. That block is not the drilling dimension for B0BWJ59P6Q. Mark brackets from the rail you hold, level, with the tails where your pipes will meet them. Do not drill from a guessed 500 mm width. If the tails do not line up and the run is buried in tile, call a heating engineer. A centre match on show is DIY. Moved pipes are not. Straight versus flat changes weight and depth, not the valve purchase. The flat panel at 62 mm and 16.1 kg dry punishes a weak fixing. Depth is on EMKE straight ladder or flat panel.

Wall, brackets, then fill and bleed

With the heating off and the zone drained or isolated and cool, fix brackets to a wall that matches the load. Masonry with the right plugs is the straightforward case. Dot-and-dab or a hollow stud is where the 16.1 kg flat panel becomes a risk once filled. Plasterboard needs anchors rated for the rail full of water, not the dry carton weight. Hang the rail, seal each tail, and open the circuit slowly. Bleed at the highest point until water, not hiss, escapes. Watch every joint for weep. On a combi, UK install guides often cite roughly 1.0 to 1.5 bar when cold, but follow your boiler manual. If the top stays cold while the bottom heats, trapped air or reversed flow is the usual check, not a diagnosis of the EMKE model. These listings have no plug and no IP rating. A water rail does not, by itself, sit in BS 7671 bathroom zones. If anyone adds a dual-fuel element later, Section 701 and IPX4 rules apply. SELECT's bath-and-shower guidance is for that different job.

Where you stop and call a professional

Stop before you break pipes if you cannot drain the system or the isolation valves do not hold. Stop if centres are wrong and the pipes are buried. Stop if the wall is hollow under the flat panel and you cannot add backing rated for a filled rail. Stop if you planned an electric element in zone 1 without a manufacturer-approved IP rating and an electrician's sign-off. Approved Document L treats fixed heating as part of the dwelling's conservation rules. It does not name a plug, because there is no plug here. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still applies if brackets or threads arrive damaged. That is a supply issue, not a reason to force a leak. When any stop triggers, a heating engineer is cheaper than a soaked ceiling.

Common questions

Are the valves in the EMKE box?
No. Brackets are included. Radiator valves are excluded on all three listings.
Do you need straight valves or angled valves?
Match the valve pattern to how pipes arrive, floor rise versus wall entry, not the Straight style label on the ladder listing.
What has to happen before you drill?
Heating off, system cool, pipes drained or isolated so you are not cutting into pressurised water.
Where do you bleed a ladder rail?
At the bleed screw on the highest part of the rail once it is filled. Keep bleeding until water, not hiss, escapes.
Can you hang the 16.1 kg flat panel on ordinary plasterboard?
Only if anchors and backing are rated for the rail full of water. The dry weight understates the loaded fixing. When in doubt, reinforce or use a professional.
What if old pipe centres do not match?
Do not force tails. Expose and measure, or call a plumber if the run is buried and wrong.
Does fitting this water rail put it in a bathroom electrical zone?
Not as a wet central-heating rail with no element. Adding electric heat later is a different compliance path.
When should you call a heating engineer?
When you cannot drain, centres need rerouting, the wall cannot carry the load, or you are adding electrical heat in the bathroom.
