How to use a 600W infrared panel heater

Updated: 22 October 2026

The panel is in the box and the room is still cold. How to use a 600W infrared panel heater comes down to three limits: the heat is felt in front of the face, the surface can mark fabric, and several units in our [600W infrared panel heater comparison](/hub/heating/600w-infrared-panel-heater) have no thermostat in the box. A 600 W element draws 0.6 kW while it is on. Peter F. compared listings extracted on 19 October 2026. No lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Put the face where you actually sit

Radiant heat warms what is in line of sight. Dimplex’s account of radiant versus convection, and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero report, both say comfort depends on whether you can see the panel. A panel behind the settee heats the settee. Face the chair, the desk, or the side of the bed you use. UK reviews of the P-600 describe one person in front of it. A UK review of the basic Hocosyme says the warmth stayed beside the panel. Hocosyme claims up to 120 °C within a minute. If only the first metre feels warm, check the aim and the room size on the buying guide before you assume a fault.

Clearances and what must not touch the panel

None of the five extracts prints a clearance diagram. Use the leaflet, and ask for an English copy if you do not have one. Herschel’s notes, an example only, use about 400 mm in front and 200 mm at the sides. Those figures are not Könighaus or Hocosyme unless the leaflet says so. Hocosyme claims up to 120 °C. A UK review of the P-600 says a cushion against the panel melted the fabric. The Smart Dual is the only listing here with a towel rail, and the rail is not the hot face.

Turn it down without buying a bigger wattage

With no thermostat, the panel runs at 600 W until you cut the power. The P-600 does not include one. The basic Hocosyme only recommends one. A plug-in stat rated around 3,600 W covers 600 W on a living-room socket. It changes the hours, not the nameplate, and it is not a bathroom solution. The £109.99 Hocosyme prints a remote and a timer. The KAISER prints an LCD and a remote. The Smart Dual prints Wi-Fi and weekly times. Set those for the hours you are in the chair. The pence are on the running cost page.

When to unplug it and call someone

Stop if the panel arrives bent, the plug pins are broken, or it smells of burning. One UK review of the Smart Dual reports broken pins. One UK review of the P-600 reports a burning smell after a burst. Photograph it and use the returns route. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects satisfactory quality. There is no burn-off instruction in these extracts. An existing living-room socket is not, by itself, notifiable under Approved Document P. A new circuit or any work around a bath or shower is. Do not add a socket beside the shower, and do not share a coiled reel with a second heater. The zone rules are on the bathroom page.

Common questions

Where should the panel face?
Face it at the seat you use, with a clear line from the panel to your body. A desk, an armchair, or the side of the bed are the usual places. DESNZ user tests and a Dimplex account of radiant heat both say the warmth is mainly in line of sight. A panel aimed at the back of a sofa heats the sofa. Warmth only within about a metre can be normal radiant behaviour.
How far from furniture and curtains?
Follow the leaflet for your model. These five listings do not print a clearance diagram. Herschel uses about 400 mm in front and 200 mm at the sides on its own panels. That is Herschel’s figure, not a Könighaus or Hocosyme measurement. A UK review of the P-600 records melted fabric where a cushion touched the face, so keep soft furnishings off the panel.
Can I dry clothes on it?
Do not hang washing, cushions, or a towel on the hot face. The Smart Dual is the only panel in this set with a towel rail, and the rail is not the heating surface. Hocosyme claims up to 120 °C. A covered face is how fabric scorches. Overheat protection is not a drying rack.
Why is the panel hot but the room cold?
The face can be hot within a minute while the air across the room barely moves. Radiant panels warm what they face. If 600 W is low for a large or leaky room, the far side stays cool however long you leave it on. Check that nothing blocks the face, then check the room size on the buying guide before you replace the panel with the same wattage.
What if there is no thermostat?
Add a plug-in thermostat on an ordinary living-room or bedroom socket, or switch the panel off when you leave. The P-600 and the basic Hocosyme do not include one. The remote Hocosyme, the KAISER, and the Smart Dual print temperature control in the bullets. A plug-in stat rated around 3,600 W is electrically enough for 600 W. It does not authorise a socket inside a bathroom zone.
Can I use an extension lead?
Prefer the panel’s own lead in a wall socket. The Hocosyme models and the P-600 print about 1.8 m of cable. A short, fully unwound lead can reach a socket that is slightly too far. A coiled reel with another heater on it is a poor idea even at 600 W. If the plug or the socket becomes hot, stop. Do not use an extension lead to put the panel closer to a bath.
When do I stop and call an electrician?
Call one for a new circuit, a consumer unit without 30 mA RCD protection on the circuit you want to use, a ceiling fixing you cannot identify, or any new work around a bath or shower. Use the returns route first if the panel arrives bent or the pins are already broken. A burning smell after you have isolated the unit is a reason not to switch it on again.
