Electronic ear defenders for shooting

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are on a UK clay stand, and the instructor is a few metres behind you. Electronic ear defenders for shooting should let that voice through and still cut the shot, without you lifting a cup. This page stays on stock clearance, glasses, wind, and the split between about £35 and a named set around £155. Prices sit on the [electronic ear defenders comparison](/hub/hearing-protection/electronic-ear-defenders). Listings, Uttings, ShootingUK and Bamfords were read on 20 October 2026. Why shooters take passive muffs off

A passive cup blocks the shot and the next sentence, so on a peg the muff comes off to hear pull. ShootingUK treats conversation plus protection as the reason instructors want an electronic set. The circuit does not add decibels. It restores quiet sound until a peak, then the amplification is meant to drop. Leisure shooting is not automatically a hearing protection zone, and a club can still require muffs. On the awesafe pages a reviewer turns the volume down because the microphones pick up wind.

Low-profile cups and glasses

A stock can lift the cup, and the circuit cannot fill that gap. Uttings sells low-profile electronic muffs as their own category. The ZOHAN 054 at £38.99 claims that shape at 280 g, with SNR 27 dB, NRR 22 dB, a 3.5 mm lead and two AAA cells. The case-green ZOHAN at £44.99 claims slim cups at 540 g and a behind-the-head fit. Mount your own gun. Glasses are the other bridge. HSE treats a poor fit as about 4 dB less than the catalogue figure. The PROHEAR 036 says gel for glasses. The plain GF01 is the tight, unpadded complaint.

About £35 or about £155

The green awesafe GF01 is £34.98, 4.6 from 9,263 reviews, NRR 24 dB and no SNR table. The ZOHAN 054 at £38.99 is the budget row that prints an SNR of 27 dB. Bamfords has listed a Caldwell low-profile muff around £48. The SportTac header is £155, 4.7 from 2,790, level-dependent and 26 dB in the title. The datasheet SNR is not in the raw, and the details block names B0H9MB3DDQ. Bamfords lists a SportTac at £159. Roles are on best electronic ear defenders. The rating method is on the buying guide.

What does not belong on the peg

The ISOtunes LINK 2.0 at £129.99 states SNR 30 dB and an 82 dB playback cap, and the spec says passive noise control. It does not amplify a range officer. Leave it if the job is a gun. The slim gel muff at £30.39 prints NRR 23 dB, with every review text from the United States and details ASIN B0H24Q6FF7. If the muffs stay loud through a shot on a fresh cell, stop. The switch-on check is on how to use electronic ear defenders.

Common questions

Do I need electronic ear defenders for clay shooting?
You need them when you must hear the instructor or the trap and you will not keep a passive cup on between shots. The circuit restores speech and is meant to drop the amplification on the report. It does not make the shot quieter than a well-sealed passive muff of a higher rating, and a quiet cage with no commands can still be a passive job.
Will low-profile cups clear a shotgun stock?
They are designed to, and shops such as Uttings treat that shape as its own category. In this set the ZOHAN 054 at 280 g and the heavier case-green ZOHAN both claim a slim cup, and the case-green fit field says behind the head. Mount your own gun. If the cup lifts, the SNR on the page is not the level at your ear, and a slimmer title will not repair that gap.
Can I hear the instructor?
That is the point of a level-dependent muff, and it is what UK reviews repeat on the awesafe, ZOHAN and SportTac pages: speech between shots, without lifting a cup. High gain brings hiss, and wind on a peg makes the microphones noisy enough that reviewers turn the volume down. If you still cannot hear a call at a gain you can stand, the cup or the circuit is the wrong one for that ground.
Are £35 muffs enough or do I need a SportTac?
A £34.98 awesafe or a £38.99 ZOHAN 054 is a fair peg muff when the cup mounts and, on the ZOHAN, you can read an SNR. The SportTac at £155 brings 4.7 from 2,790 reviews and a datasheet SNR of 26 dB that this amazon raw does not reprint. Pay that when you want the name and the longer service comments.
What about wind on a peg?
Microphones treat wind as sound. On the awesafe file a reviewer turns the volume down for that reason. A still shooting ground hides the problem, and an exposed peg shows it within a minute. Drop the gain rather than assuming every electronic muff behaves like a passive cup in a breeze. If the rush is still louder than the call, that set is the wrong one for an open stand.
Can I wear shooting glasses as well?
Yes, if the cushion still seals around the frame. The PROHEAR 036 states gel seals for glasses and has UK clay-day comments in its favour, plus a review that the cut was not always fast enough. The 4 dB real-world allowance is a warning about that leak, not a reason to ignore it. Press the cups once with your own glasses on. If the world only quietens when you press, the seal has already failed.
