How to use a smoothing plane

Updated: 24 October 2026

The plane is on the bench, the iron is near the mouth, and the wood is unmarked. That is the usual start with one of the No. 4s in the [smoothing plane comparison](/hub/hand-tools/smoothing-plane). This is how far to go for one thin shaving, and where to stop if the fault is the tool. Peter F. wrote it on 22 October 2026 from amazon.co.uk review notes and public setup guides. There was no lab test. A comparison link can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Sharpening here is the first edge, not a course. If the job is a door, use the [hand plane for a sticking door](/hub/hand-tools/smoothing-plane/sub/smoothing-plane-for-doors) page after the scrap behaves.

Before the first stroke

Wipe the sole. Planes in this set often arrive with grease on the iron. Look at the edge under a lamp. A nick or a chip is why the first pass leaves a line. The brown Amazon Basics listing tells you to check that the blade is sharp and the sole is flat. That is the expectation at £21.95, not permission to grind a bent sole and then ask for a refund. Photograph the sole before you abrade it. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is about satisfactory quality. Wear eye protection. If the iron is fully retracted, as Spear & Jackson reviewers often find, it was parked for shipping. Advance it only after you have looked at the edge.

Set the iron and the cap iron

Seat the iron so a hair of it shows evenly. Advance in small turns until a shaving shows on both sides of a scrap. If one corner is silent, use the lateral adjuster. The cap iron must meet the back of the iron with no gap. If chips pack under the cap iron, mate that surface. Do not file the mouth. On the brown Amazon Basics the clamp screw can be soft and the iron creeps back. One cap-iron hole would not clamp at all. On the Jorgensen the front knob turns before the yoke moves. On one Faithfull No. 4 the iron still projected more on one side at full lateral adjustment.

Read the sole

A touch of light at the heel can be a short lap, knocking off high spots so the toe, the mouth and the heel share the cut. Spear & Jackson reviews describe a hollow behind the mouth often enough that you should look before you blame the edge. Stop if the light is a pair of rails. One Faithfull No. 4 had raised edges of nearly 0.5 mm and was returned. Stop if a banana sole is the pattern in your hand. An adjustable mouth is claimed on the grey Amazon Basics title, and the first 50 reviews do not describe anyone using it.

One shaving, then stop

Clamp a scrap wider than the iron, cut with the grain, weight on the toe as you enter and on the heel as you leave. You want a shaving that curls across the whole width. When the scrap behaves, retract the iron and lay the plane on its side. Grease the sole if the plane will sit in a damp shed. Contact the seller when the clamp will not hold the iron out, when the edge will not square, or when the sole has rails you would have to grind. The block plane in a Faithfull box is not this setup. That split is the smoothing plane vs block plane page.

Common questions

Why does a new plane not cut?
Usually the iron is retracted, blunt, or not square across the mouth. Spear & Jackson reviews often find it fully wound back. Advance it in small turns until a shaving appears on both sides of a clamped scrap. If the iron creeps back as you cut, the clamp is failing, which is the fault described on the brown Amazon Basics. If the sole rocks on rails, no amount of depth will give you an even shaving.
Do I hone before the first pass?
Look first. If the edge is keen and free of nicks, try a fine set on a scrap before you hone. If it is dull, retracted and grey, hone it. The brown Amazon Basics listing tells you to check sharpness and the sole. A chip or a nick that leaves a track is not a dull edge you can ignore. Hone only the iron you mean to keep, and photograph a damaged edge before you grind the evidence off.
How do I set the depth without digging in?
Start with the iron just proud of the sole, evenly, and take quarter turns until both sides of the scrap produce a shaving. Use an eighth of a turn to refine it. That sequence is Paul Sellers' practice, not a setting printed on these amazon listings. If the knob has backlash, as Jorgensen reviewers describe, let the slack finish before you judge the cut. A trench means you went too far. Back off and try again.
What is the cap iron for?
It supports the edge and breaks the shaving, and it only does that if it meets the iron with no gap. Flatten its underside until light disappears, and do not drag it across the edge while you fit it. A gap, or a rough leading edge of the sort Stanley reviewers mention, packs chips and looks like a blunt iron. Close the gap before you blame the steel.
When do I stop lapping and contact the seller?
Stop when the sole still rocks after a short lap, when you are removing a rail of around half a millimetre, or when the iron will not stay out or will not square. Those are the return cases in this set. A blunt iron that the listing told you to sharpen is not one of them. Keep the photos you took before you changed the sole, and do not file the mouth to hide a cap-iron gap.
