How to use a screwdriver set without chewing the head

Updated: 24 October 2026

The screw is already in the hinge, the driver is in your hand, and one slip will round the recess before the bracket is tight. How to use a screwdriver set, at that moment, is a short order: read the head, match the tip, seat it, keep the shaft in line, and stop when the tip starts to climb out. The sets themselves are compared on the [screwdriver set comparison](/hub/hand-tools/screwdriver-set). Peter F. used these amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources, dated 22 October 2026, not a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Read the screw before you turn it

Look at the recess before you try a tip. A plain cross is a Phillips candidate. Four tick marks between the arms are the usual Pozidriv tell. Bolts.co.uk treats those as different recesses, and a near fit is how heads get chewed. If you cannot see the ticks, decide the family on the Pozidriv vs Phillips page before you lean on a driver. PZ2 is a rule of thumb for many wood screws. A tip that rocks is small. A tip on the rim is large. A slotted blade has to fill the slot.

Seat it and stay in line

Push the tip fully into the recess before you turn, and keep your forearm in line with the screw. Be Practical's notes put that seat first. If the handle goes light and the tip rises, you are camming out. Stop. On a head that is already damaged, ASP Ltd keeps the pressure downward and turns anti-clockwise. A flat driver in a ruined Phillips recess is a recovery trick. Toolstation then moves to an elastic band and a screw extractor. This page does not give extractor drill sizes.

Ratchet, magnet, and a drill

On the Amazon Basics set the ratchet needs resistance before it drives, so a loose screw may click until the tip bites. Use the locked position to break a tight screw free. The precision bits are only for small electronics, and reviewers say they can bend. A bit will not sit in the collar without the shaft holder. A magnetic tip holds a steel screw, not brass, and it is not insulation. Rolson and Amazon Basics bits go into a drill in some reviews. Neither listing says the bits are impact rated. If the bit walks, go back to the handle.

When the set has already lost

If the recess is already round, a fresh Pozidriv driver will not restore the flanks. Try the removal once, with more pressure and less speed, then change tool. Stop when the job is a consumer unit, a circuit you cannot isolate, a fixing whose failure could injure someone, or an insulated sleeve that is cut. A clear-handled mains tester is not an insulated screwdriver, which is the distinction Be Practical draws, and it is not a device for proving a circuit dead. Unplug an appliance before you chase a screw in its casing. Live-working marks are on the VDE screwdriver set page.

Common questions

Which driver do I pick first?
Pick from the recess, not from the driver you are already holding. Tick marks mean try Pozidriv. A plain cross means try Phillips. Then match size so the tip fills the recess without rocking. PZ2 is a rule-of-thumb starting point for many wood screws, including the Be Practical note of a size 2 for about 4–5 mm. If it rocks or perches on the rim, change size before you twist.
How hard do I push?
Hard enough that the tip stays seated while you turn, and in line with the screw. You are holding it in the recess, not leaning your body weight onto a tip that is already climbing out. If the handle suddenly goes light and the tip rises, that is cam-out. Stop, reseat or change size. There is no reliable percentage of push versus twist worth copying from a page that is not about your screw.
Can I use the bits in a drill?
You can for a light job if the bit fits the chuck or holder, and reviewers do that with Rolson and Amazon Basics bits. The listings do not say those bits are impact rated. A drill hides the climb-out you would feel by hand. Keep the Amazon Basics precision bits off high-torque screws even in a drill. The listing limits them to small electronics.
What do I do if the head is already round?
Seat whatever still grips, press along the screw, and turn anti-clockwise to remove, which is the ASP approach for a damaged head. A flat blade in a ruined Phillips recess is a recovery trick, not your normal method. If that fails, an elastic band and then an extractor are the steps Toolstation describes. Do not keep swapping drivers and hoping torque will recut the recess.
When do I stop and call someone?
Stop when the circuit may be live and you cannot isolate it, when the screw is in a consumer unit, when the fixing is safety-critical, or when an insulated sleeve is damaged. Also stop when the head is round and the surrounding chipboard is breaking up and you do not have an extractor. A neon screwdriver is not how you prove the circuit dead.
Are the tiny bits in a ratchet set for furniture screws?
No. The Amazon Basics listing says the precision bits are only for small electronic devices, not for oversized screws that need a large torque. Reviewers report those bits bending. Use a full-size driver for a hinge or a bracket. The tiny bits are for the laptop, the glasses and the battery cover the bullet names.
