Double ring ratchet spanner vs combination

Updated: 24 October 2026

A £13 five-piece and a £30 combination set are different tools. Double ring ratchet spanner vs combination is the shape choice: two rings on one handle, or an open end plus a ratchet ring. Paired sets from about £13 to £22 match a job you can cap from the end. Slide-on access, or 8–19 mm without holes, needs a combination list that prints those sizes. The rows are in the [ratchet ring spanner comparison](/hub/hand-tools/ratchet-ring-spanner). How to read a size list is in the [buying guide](/hub/hand-tools/ratchet-ring-spanner/sub/ratchet-ring-spanner-buying-guide). The two shapes, without the catalogue nickname

In this file a double ring is two ratchet rings on one handle, each a different size. Rolson 46905 and DURATECH DTRRW05M are built that way, and both Amtech sets are five ring pieces. A combination spanner here has an open jaw and a ratchet ring. Amazon Basics, Qnkaa, both Enventor sets, both Bosch sets and Toolzone are that shape. A trade title can say double end and still describe one open jaw and one ring. Look for the open jaw. Paired rings cannot slide on from the side. A combination set can, and it still will not break a seized nut. Thanet Tool Supplies says the tight start and the final tightness belong on a normal spanner.

What five paired pieces actually cover

Five pieces are ten ends, and only the sizes printed. Rolson at £16.26 prints 6×8, 10×12, 11×13, 14×17 and 19×21 mm. DURATECH at £21.99 prints 6×8, 10×12, 13×14, 15×17 and 19×21 mm, with a 25° offset and a pouch. You can own both and still lack 7, 9, 16, 18 and 20 mm. Amtech K1500 at £12.73 states 6×8 to 19×21 mm and does not print the middle pairs. The jaw field says 19 mm while the size line includes 21 mm. Amtech K1525 states 6 mm to 21 mm and no pairs. A combination set that skips 16 mm does not gain 16 mm from a 14×17 ring. Qnkaa prints 8 to 19 mm and the Enventor sets print 6 to 19 mm. Those are combination lists.

When the open end is the point

Use the open end on a pipe, a stud or a nut against a face, where you cannot drop a ring down the axis. Haynes says the open jaw touches two faces and slips, so place with the open end if you must, then turn with the ring. Amazon Basics at £18.53 is the best value when 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17 mm are the sizes you meet. Each has an open end, and 9, 11 and 16 mm are missing. Bosch Professional is a combination set too, skipping 9 and 11 mm. A paired ring still cannot feed sideways onto a stud.

Offset is not flex

A 25° offset is a fixed bend. DURATECH prints it on both box ends, and Amtech K1525 prints it on an offset ring set. You cannot change the angle while you pull. A flex head moves. Enventor SGRD001 states 180° in the title, on a 6–19 mm combination set. Toolzone states 180° on an AF span. SGRD008 mentions flex only in included components, so that hinge stays unconfirmed. Car Mechanics' warning sits on the hinge: a flex head should not take the same load as a fixed head. The offset ring still has to go on from the end. Choose SGRD001 when the handle has to fold away from a strut and the size is between 6 and 19 mm.

Common questions

What is a double ring ratchet spanner in this file?
Two ratchet rings on one handle, different sizes, with no open jaw. Rolson and DURATECH print the pairs. The Amtech sets are five ring pieces, and K1525 does not itemise them. A trade title that says double end and then describes an open jaw is a combination spanner.
When do you need the open end?
When you cannot drop a ring onto the fastener from the end. A pipe, a long stud or a nut hard against a face needs the open jaw to slide on from the side. Turn with the ring afterwards. Haynes' warning is that the open jaw slips if you leave it there for the heavy pull.
Does five pieces mean five sizes or ten?
Ten ends, and only the sizes that are printed. Rolson's five handles cover ten named millimetre ends with gaps between the pairs. They are not sizes 6 through 15 in a row. DURATECH's ten ends are a different ten. Count the jaws on the page, not the piece count in the title.
Why are the Rolson and DURATECH pairs different?
They are different catalogues, not two printings of one standard set. Rolson has 11×13 and 14×17. DURATECH has 13×14 and 15×17, plus a 25° offset and a pouch. Both share 6×8, 10×12 and 19×21. Buying both still leaves 7, 9, 16, 18 and 20 mm.
Is an offset ring the same as a flex head?
No. Twenty-five degrees on DURATECH and K1525 is fixed. A flex head, stated at 180° on Enventor SGRD001 and on the Toolzone AF set, pivots. SGRD008 does not confirm flex in the title. The flex head is also the one you should not use to crack a seized nut.
Which shape for a nut against a face?
A combination spanner, so the open end can approach from the side. A double ring cannot. Once the ring will seat, use the ring for the pull. If the size is missing from every combination list you own, neither shape in the drawer solves it.
Can the combination ratchet replace a plain spanner for the first crack?
No. Use a normal ring, a socket or a breaker bar to start a tight nut, then the ratchet to run it. Finish a published torque with a torque wrench. The combination ratchet is the fast tool after the fastener is already moving.
