Nut splitter for seized nuts on a car

Updated: 23 October 2026

The nut is on the car, not in a vice. The stud may spin and the ring may not pass the hex. Use a splitter only when the frame seats, the stud should survive, and sparks are a bad idea. The jobs are an exhaust flange, a drop link, a track-rod nut and a tow-bar nut. The cut sequence is on [how to use a nut splitter](/hub/hand-tools/nut-splitter/sub/nut-splitter-how-to-use). Prices are on the [Nut splitter comparison](/hub/hand-tools/nut-splitter). Peter F. updated this on 23 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A spinning stud is not a tight nut

Oil and a shock come first on a nut that is merely seized, when the surroundings can take the oil. They stop working when the stud rotates on a ball joint, which is the PistonHeads point. A splitter can still crack the hex if the frame stays on. It is not a repair, and it is not safe on a track-rod end you cannot see. Cold split or disc is the nut splitter or angle grinder page.

Exhaust, drop link, track rod, tow bar

An exhaust nut is often heat-cycled. QWORK reviews include a split and a bent chisel. BGS reviews include exhaust nuts and a pin that breaks first. Fit comes before the brand. A drop link beside a fuel tank and a brake hose is no place for a torch. QWORK reviews include a drop link that came off and a frame that bent. A chart often puts M10 near 17 mm and M12 near 19 mm, so a track-rod nut usually wants a 16–22 mm body. Measure, and stop if you cannot see the taper. A tow-bar nut sometimes needs 22–27 mm. A DASBET review on the £18.99 set used an impact driver after a spanner and a 400 Nm wrench had failed. That is a report, not a method.

The frame has to pass over the nut

The ring has to pass over the hex and still aim the chisel at a flat. A flange can block that even when the across-flats number is in range. Hi-Force, on a hydraulic head that is not one of these ASINs, tells you to check the clearance between nut and flange neck. BGS is the only row here with lengths: 95 mm up to 16 mm, and 120 mm up to 22 mm. If the gap is shorter than the frame is deep, the length does not help. Hilka’s package line of 5 × 5 × 5 cm is not a reach. If the ring will not pass, a fourth size does not move the flange. A hacksaw is the spark-free alternative only where a blade has a gap.

No torch on a tank, and no impact gun as a default

A drop link beside a fuel tank and a brake hose is not a place for a torch, and it is not a place for a disc. Electrical Safety First’s grinder advice, sparks away from anything flammable, is the same boundary. If the splitter seats, it is the cold attempt. If it does not seat, you wait or you trailer the car. An impact gun on the splitter screw is not the default. A spinning chisel under an impact shears the guide screw. Hand pressure lets you stop at the crack. Call a garage for fuel, a brake hose, or a steering joint you cannot see. A wiper nut can stay a driveway job. If you cannot see an exhaust stud, an exhaust shop is the next step.

Common questions

Will it take an exhaust nut off without snapping the stud?
Sometimes the nut cracks and the stud stays, which some BGS and QWORK reviews describe. Sometimes the chisel bends first, which those same files also describe. Only BGS states a length, 95 mm or 120 mm. If the frame will not pass, it will not take the nut off. See both sides before you load the screw.
The stud spins because it is a ball joint. Will oil help?
Oil helps a thread that is stuck and a stud that is held. It does not stop a ball joint from turning with the nut, which is the PistonHeads point. A splitter can still crack the hex if the frame stays on while the stud rotates. It does not repair the joint, and it does not make a hidden taper safe to cut on the drive. If you cannot see the joint, stop.
Drop link next to a fuel tank: splitter, torch, or grinder?
Splitter, if the frame seats on a flat. Not a torch, and not a grinder, while the tank and a brake hose are in the spark path. QWORK reviews include a drop link that came off and a frame that bent, so the cold attempt can still end with a dead tool. When the ring will not pass, do not switch to a disc because the chisel blunted.
The ring will not pass over the nut. What now?
Stop forcing it. A larger stated range does not move the flange out of the way. A smaller body in a three-piece set sometimes seats, which QWORK reviewers found. BGS lengths of 95 mm and 120 mm are the only reach figures here. If neither body goes on, a junior hacksaw is the spark-free alternative only where a blade has a gap. If the gap is a hose, it is a garage job.
Is a tow-bar nut different?
It can be larger. The DASBET review that names tow-bar nuts is on a four-piece set whose range includes 22–27 mm, after a spanner and a 400 Nm impact wrench had failed. A 16–22 mm pair may be too small, which you will know only by measuring. The same review used an impact driver on the splitter. Do not copy that. Hand-turn the screw, and treat a sheared guide pin as the end of the tool.
