Hollow mortise chisel or a hand chisel

Updated: 23 October 2026

A hollow mortise chisel in the amazon.co.uk results looks like a chisel you can chuck in the drill you already own. It is a square sleeve with an auger inside, and it cuts a square only while something else holds the sleeve still. If you cannot clamp that sleeve, buy a hand chisel or leave the joint. Peter F. read the four hollow listings and the Narex hand chisels on 22 October 2026. No drill press was run. The [mortise chisel comparison](/hub/hand-tools/mortise-chisel) lists the prices. The mallet sequence is on [how to use a mortice chisel](/hub/hand-tools/mortise-chisel/sub/mortise-chisel-how-to-use). A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two tools, one name

The auger bores the waste and the sleeve squares the corners. Kendal Tools describes that pair as a mortiser bit, used in more than one plunge. If the sleeve spins with the auger, you get a round hole and a square edge whipping around. There is no hoop for a mallet. The sleeve sits in a clamp while only the auger turns. Machine Mart lists the Clarke CMA1B at £59.98, with collar sizes of 55 mm to 65 mm for named Clarke presses. That page does not show the collar accepting these Amazon bits. If your press cannot hold the sleeve, the bit cannot finish the square.

What these listings include

The Holy Feather is one 6.35 mm bit at about £7.99. The bullet says about 150 mm overall, and the dimension line is a 25 mm cube. No adapter is included. ArtisanShow is about £26.99 for 6.35 mm to 16 mm, with a 19 mm shank and an HSS claim of HRC 48–50. No cage is named. GOTOTOP is about £30.88. The title says titanium-coated and the material line says alloy steel. Luolety is about £49.99, the only title with an adapter, and the bullet rules out lithium cordless drills. The title says seven pieces and prints eight diameters. A UK review counted four sizes. None of the hardness figures was measured. Hand-chisel widths stay on the buying guide.

What UK reviewers had to add

The only Holy Feather review, dated 23 November 2025, says an adapter cost about £15 and that a handheld drill without a clamp could be dangerous. One ArtisanShow review put an adapter at about £50 and had not used the set. Another called a set faulty. Five UK reviews sit against 4.2 from 198. On GOTOTOP, one UK buyer made a table, and another describes a hand caught in the bit and a week off work because the cage was missing. That is one account, not a rate. On luolety, reviews include a cut up to 5 cm, a joiner who said it failed, and bolts that stripped so the frame would not stay on the drill press. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, a bullet that says any drill, beside a clamp the box does not contain, is a description you can query. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 do not turn a cordless drill into a mortiser.

When the mallet chisel is the better buy

For one joint, a hand chisel is slower and needs no chuck. The Wood Line 6 mm is about £15.96 and the 4, 6, 10 and 12 mm set is about £63.00. You need a mallet and a hone, not an adapter at about £15 or about £50. The Richter at about £54.50 has no review text, so it is not the default escape from a hollow set. Choose a hollow chisel only when the drill press is already there and the collar fits. The Clarke kit does not prove it holds an ArtisanShow shank. A fire door is a joiner's job. Who each hand listing is for is on the best mortice chisel page. If you cannot clamp the sleeve, the 6 mm is the best value for one narrow mortice and the set is the top pick when you also want 10 mm. Price the adapter before you call a hollow set cheap.

Common questions

What is a hollow mortise chisel?
It is a square steel sleeve with a drill bit running inside it. The bit clears the wood and the sleeve cuts the corners, as long as the sleeve is held still and the pair is plunged on a mortiser or a proper drill-press attachment. It is not a chisel with a handle. The amazon.co.uk listings in this capture sit in drill-bit ranks for that reason.
Why does it cut a round hole?
Because the sleeve is spinning with the auger, or because nothing is squaring the corners. A round hole is what a drill does. The square comes from the sleeve staying put while the auger turns inside it. If your setup cannot separate those two jobs, you will not get the square the title photograph shows.
Can I use a square-hole bit in a cordless drill?
Not on the evidence in these files. The Holy Feather bullet says any standard drill, and the only UK review says that is misleading and could be dangerous without a clamp. The luolety bullet says the set is not suitable for lithium battery drills. Do not treat a cheaper bit as the exception. If you cannot clamp the sleeve, do not cut the joint with it.
What is the cage or adapter?
It is the part that holds the sleeve still and lines it up with the auger. It is not in the Holy Feather, ArtisanShow or GOTOTOP included lines. One UK review put an adapter at about £15, another at about £50. The luolety title includes a frame, and a UK review says the bolts stripped. Machine Mart's Clarke CMA1B at £59.98 is a separate attachment with stated collar sizes of 55 mm to 65 mm. Price the clamp before you compare the bit with an about £15.96 hand chisel.
Will a pillar drill mortice a door edge?
A UK review of the luolety frame says a pillar drill will not mortice a door, and guessed that the frame needed a column rise probably over 45 cm. A door is also an awkward shape to support under a short quill. A fire door is work for a joiner. A bench mortice in a small rail is the job a hand chisel is built for, without the column.
Is a hand chisel slower but safer for one joint?
It is slower for a run of identical holes, and it is the setup that does not spin a sleeve. One GOTOTOP review describes an injury when a cage was missing. That does not mean every hollow chisel injures someone. It does mean a single furniture mortice is a poor reason to chuck a square bit in a handheld drill. A Narex from about £15.96, a mallet and a hone are the alternative that matches one joint.
What should I do if the sleeve has already spun?
Unplug the machine and stop. Do not grip a spinning sleeve and do not move your hand closer to line it up while the drill is on. If you have already been cut, that is a medical matter, not a sharper bit. Afterwards, either fit a clamp the listing actually supports or put the hollow chisel aside and chop the mortice by hand.
