Warding file vs needle file

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are looking at two amazon.co.uk titles that both offer six small files. One says key file or warding file. The other says needle file. They are not one product with two names. A warding file, in UK tool writing, is a slim rectangular profile for narrow spaces, and a warding file set is six handled shapes in that small size. A needle file is thinner, often with the handle formed as part of the blade. The [key file comparison](/hub/hand-tools/key-files) only ranks handled mixed sets. Figures are from 22 October 2026. Peter F. did not measure the files. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three names, two tools

Key file, on the listings in this comparison, is a shop title for a six-piece set with handles. GEDORE red R93000006 and BGS 50204 both use it. Draper 14185 uses warding file set for the same kind of box: six profiles, 100 mm, handles fitted. The title does not mean the file only cuts keys, and it does not mean it is a needle file. Warding file, as a single profile, is narrower than the set name. Wonkee Donkee describes a slim rectangular section, tapering towards the point, double cut on the faces and single cut on the edges, commonly 100 mm to 250 mm. Tooled-Up calls that rectangle larger and more robust than a needle file. A boxed set is six profiles, not six copies of that rectangle. C.K's 120P sheet lists hand, flat, half-round, round, square, and three-square, each 100 mm, second cut, with a wooden handle.

Thickness and the handle

Thickness and the handle are the split you can see. Wonkee Donkee puts needle and escapement files at about 100 mm to 137 mm, with a rounded handle formed with the blade. C.K sells needle files on the same sheet as the warding set, and they are different: 140 mm overall, cut 0, sold as blades. The shapes share names. The product does not. A warding or key set here arrives with a wooden or plastic handle on each file. A needle file often arrives as a blade, or with an integral tang you pinch. A bare needle tang is normal. A loose handle on a warding set is a fault. Only BGS prints second cut. None of these three rows is a diamond file.

Length is a tendency, not a rule

Wonkee's needle band starts at 100 mm, which is also the short warding length C.K and Souber print. You cannot say the shorter one is always the needle file. C.K's contrast is a 100 mm handled warding file against a 140 mm needle blade. GEDORE's key-file listing states 177 mm and is still a handled set, not a needle file. Do not correct the titles by measuring the photographs.

Which listing is which

All three comparison rows are handled mixed sets. None is a bare needle file. Draper is 100 mm with plastic handles and no cut stated. BGS is 100 mm, second cut, wooden handles, in a pouch. GEDORE is 177 mm, wooden handles, in a case, and no cut stated. If you wanted a needle file, none of them is that silhouette. SJ Tools lists Draper 14185 as a 100 mm warding set and, separately, Draper 140 mm needle sets. ValueMax's interchangeable needle set, about £6.99, is one shared handle and slim blades. Buy the 100 mm handled set for a notch you can reach with a proper grip. Buy a needle file when the space is too tight for a wooden handle. If you want a pick among the handled sets, the best key file set page says who each row suits.

Common questions

Is a key file a needle file?
Not on these listings. GEDORE and BGS use key file set for six handled files. A needle file is a thinner precision file, often sold as a blade or with an integral slim handle. The shapes can share names, such as flat, round, and square. The silhouette and the handle do not. A key-file title is not a promise of jewellery-scale thickness.
What is the single profile called a warding file?
Wonkee Donkee describes one slim rectangular file, tapered towards the point, double cut on the faces and single cut on the edges, commonly 100 mm to 250 mm. Locksmiths use that profile in wards and on key notches. A boxed warding file set adds hand, flat, round, square, and three-square files beside it. Those extra shapes are why the box exists.
Which is thinner?
The needle file. Tooled-Up describes a warding file as larger and more robust, and Wonkee describes needle files as the thinner precision tools. Length does not decide it. Both types are sold around 100 mm, C.K's needle files are 140 mm, and GEDORE's key-file set states 177 mm. Shop for thickness and the handle. We have not calipered the Amazon files.
Do needle files need a separate handle?
Often you hold the integral tang, and a needle-file holder exists when that tang is too thin. A warding or key set here is sold with wooden or plastic handles already fitted. INDG229 says a file should have a proper handle and should not be used as a lever. A bare needle tang is normal. A rocking handle on a warding set is a fault in that set.
Which one do locksmiths mean?
Trade pages mean the warding file: the slim profile, and the 100 mm handled sets sold for wards and key notches. They do not mean a 140 mm cut-0 needle blade, and they do not mean a diamond file. Our three rows sit on the handled-set side of that sentence. Matching the length does not make the listing a locksmith service.
