Stainless steel griddle plate buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are at the barbecue with a tape measure and an amazon.co.uk tab that calls a plate both universal and 7 cm thick. Those two lines do not tell you whether eggs will sit flat or fall through the bars. This checklist is what the Products Compared editorial team used on the twelve amazon.co.uk listings, read on 15 October 2026. Shelf prices run from £43.99 to £104.99. Which listing is the top pick, and which is the best value, sits on the [stainless steel griddle comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/stainless-steel-griddle). What you are actually buying

A grill-top plate is a formed stainless sheet you set on a barbecue you already own. The burners stay where they are. A freestanding gas plancha has its own burners and a much thicker plate. A slotted pan is a third product. Every listing in this set is the first kind. Universal means the seller did not name your model. The plate is cookware. Assimilated Regulation 1935/2004 and the England 2012 food-contact regulations say an article must not transfer harmful levels into food. Food grade or 304 on a title is a claim unless a declaration of compliance is in the file. None of these files has one. Fit, grease, and carbon monoxide are on the griddle plate for a gas BBQ page.

Size and the 7 cm trap

Measure the cooking grate before you trust a title. Large plates in this set are about 58 × 40 cm, mid plates about 45–51 cm wide, and smaller plates about 40 × 30 cm. A 58 cm plate on a compact kettle overhangs. A 40 × 30 cm plate leaves open bars for steaks while breakfast sits on the plate. A line such as 58 × 40 × 7 cm is length, width, and tray height. It is not the steel. The best stainless steel griddle plate page puts a condition on each size.

Thickness, 304, and heat

Stated gauges in this set are 1.2 mm, 2 mm, and 4 mm. The other listings do not state a gauge. ManoMano's at least 6 mm line is a retailer rule of thumb for plancha plates, not a legal minimum for these inserts. UK reviews on thin sheets here mention warp. Only QWORK and Onlyfire B0999CDF1H say 304. QWORK's spec line prints 0.1 cm against a 1.2 mm bullet. Read both lines. If the open question is the metal, use the stainless steel vs carbon steel griddle page.

Grease, coating, dishwasher, induction

Most of these plates have a front trough. Onlyfire's 304 plate and the honeycomb plate use a drain hole. GriHero's UK reviews say the rear holes are small, a poor match for bacon. A trough does not, by itself, end flare-ups. Coating and dishwasher flags change by ASIN. Only the GriHero listing claims induction. The other files leave that question blank.

What not to conclude from the review count

Three Onlyfire plates each print 4.2 from 1,641 and the same review text. The two kits each print 4.2 from 117. Adding those figures makes one block look like five samples. It is two blocks. Read the complaint beside the star. Weld failure, a twist as soon as heat hits, and warp after two uses sit in the UK notes even where the average looks acceptable. Leave a listing whose only thickness figure is 7 cm.

Common questions

What size plate do I need for my barbecue?
Measure the bars, then match about 58 × 40 cm, about 45–51 cm wide, or about 40 × 30 cm. A plate that overhangs will rock. Universal on these amazon.co.uk titles means the seller did not name your model.
Is 7 cm the thickness of the steel?
On these inserts, 58 × 40 × 7 cm is length, width, and tray height. The steel gauge, when stated, is 1.2 mm, 2 mm, or 4 mm. Onlyfire B089VR7JVN prints 23 × 16 × 7 centimetres beside a 58.4 × 40.6 cm title. Treat 7 cm as wall height unless the bullet says millimetres of sheet.
Does 304 on the title mean it is certified food grade?
It means the listing claims 304. Only QWORK B0FDGFXWNM and Onlyfire B0999CDF1H say it, and neither file has a declaration of compliance. A UK review on that Onlyfire plate says the steel stained and is not stainless. That is a customer dispute, not a laboratory result.
Is a 1.2 mm plate a poor buy next to a 6 mm plancha?
They are different objects. ManoMano's at least 6 mm line is a retailer rule of thumb for plancha plates, not a legal minimum for a grill-top insert. A stated 1.2 mm sheet, on the QWORK and Onlyfire B072LCVNHT, can still fry an egg. It stores less heat, and UK notes here link thin sheet to warp.
Should I trust the dishwasher-safe flag?
Trust it as that ASIN's flag, then check the width. Inside Onlyfire the flags disagree. A yes does not show that a plate near 58 cm fits a domestic machine. Where the flag says no, as on the DOBADN, the WUDLEP, and the 18 inch kit, wash by hand.
Why do three Onlyfire listings show 1,641 reviews?
The same text and the same 1,641 count are printed on B089VR7JVN, B0DHCMMH7Y, and B072LCVNHT. They are one shared block, not labelled by size. The kits repeat the pattern at 4.2 from 117. Adding the counts invents a sample you do not have.
Will every stainless plate work on induction?
Only the GriHero listing claims induction cooktops, and that claim is not a test in this file. The other files leave the question unanswered. YIYAXIN's UK review returned a 58 × 41 cm plate that was too big for a gas hob. Measure the surface you will actually use.
