Kettle barbecue buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are standing between a £29 bowl and a £239 Weber, and the titles all say kettle. This kettle barbecue buying guide is the rule before the brand names: diameter and grate area first, then enamel and vents you can still move when the coals are lit, then thermometer and ash extras only if the cook needs them. The [kettle barbecue comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/kettle-barbecue) lists the nine amazon.co.uk captures behind this page. Peter F., DIY and tools editor, used Weber UK size claims and GOV.UK smoke-control notes, not a laboratory cook. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. 47 cm or 57 cm

Bowl diameter is the first decision that actually changes the meal. Weber UK puts about 1,548 cm² and four to six people on a 47 cm compact, and about 2,342 cm² and six to eight people on a 57 cm kettle. In this set the 43–45 cm bowls (PREMZO, HOMION, House of Home) are the two-person end: fine for sausages and a couple of steaks, tight once you want coals banked away from the food. The compact 57 cm and the Original Kettle Premium share the same bullet area of 2,342 cm²; the premium does not buy you a larger grate. If the patio is narrow and the household is two, stay in the 43–47 cm band and read the small kettle barbecue for a patio.

Enamel, vents, and ash

Porcelain enamel on the bowl and lid is the listing claim that separates a kettle built to wipe down from bare thin steel that rusts once ash sits wet over winter. Weber’s compact and premium bullets use that enamel wording. Attribute lines that print Plastic, Nylon, or Ceramic on the same Weber pages contradict the bullets; keep both, and trust the bullet when you buy. You need a bowl damper and a lid damper you can still use during the cook. A UK review of the HOMION says the bottom vent sits inside the drum and opens only when the kettle is cold. A pan or catcher that stays on when you roll the kettle beats a tray that drops off in the first week. Named faults on handles, tongs, and trays belong on the best kettle barbecue page.

Thermometer and compact against original

A lid thermometer does not make the food cook itself. It helps when you hold an indirect roast and you do not want to lift the lid every few minutes. In this set, the Weber Original Kettle Premium (model 1502210) lists a built-in thermometer, One-Touch cleaning into a removable catcher, and tool hooks at a captured £239. The Weber Compact 47 cm and Compact 57 cm bullets in the same capture set do not list those extras. Direct grilling of sausages does not need the premium gauge.

Prices and bad spec fields

Captured amazon.co.uk bands for these nine kettles only: entry about £28.80–£33.99, Weber Compact 47 cm at £49.49, mid about £87.99–£127.99 including the Compact 57 cm at £99.99, and the Original Kettle Premium at £239. On 21 October 2026 Weber UK listed the Compact 47 cm at £94.99 and the Compact 57 cm at £139.99, so channel prices diverge; quote the shelf you are looking at. Ignore attribute traps. A 57 cm Weber that prints 57 square centimetres is echoing the diameter, not the grate; use the bullet 2,342 cm². A title that says 348 square inches beside an attribute that says 348 square centimetres is a unit clash. The compact 57 cm weight of 3.77 kg is not credible next to the 47 cm compact at 9 kg.

Common questions

Is 47 cm enough or do I need 57 cm?
For two people and weeknight grilling, 47 cm is usually enough. Stretch to 57 cm when you regularly cook for six or want room to bank coals for an indirect joint. A 43 cm bowl in this set is the smaller two-person end, not a family grate.
What is a real cooking area in square centimetres?
Trust a bullet that states 1,548 cm² or 2,342 cm² on a Weber kettle. Do not trust an amazon attribute that prints 47 or 57 square centimetres on a kettle whose diameter is 47 or 57 cm. Square inches in a title are not the same number as square centimetres in an attribute when both print 348.
Do I need a lid thermometer?
Only if you hold indirect cooks and prefer not to lift the lid constantly. The Original Kettle Premium lists one; the Weber compacts in this set do not. Direct grilling of thin food works without a gauge. A clip-on thermometer is an alternative if you buy a compact.
Is porcelain enamel worth paying for?
Pay for enamel wording you can verify on the maker page. Do not upgrade a budget kettle in your head because the title says stainless.
What is the difference between a compact and an original kettle?
In this capture set, compact means the shallower Weber layout without a lid thermometer or One-Touch in the bullets. Original Kettle Premium (1502210) adds the thermometer, One-Touch ash sweep, and tool hooks at £239. The 57 cm compact and the premium share the same bullet grate area.
Can I use a kettle in a smoke control area?
GOV.UK allows an outdoor barbecue in a smoke control area. The restricted act is smoke from a chimney, not the kettle itself. Neighbour smoke can still be a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 in England; check your council elsewhere in the UK.
What should I ignore on the amazon spec table?
Ignore a diameter copied into a square-centimetre field, a Plastic or Nylon line on an enamelled Weber, and the compact 57 cm weight of 3.77 kg.
