Grill fan buying guide: crank, battery, or 12 V kit

Updated: 23 October 2026

Three different tools sit in the same Barbecue Fans list on amazon.co.uk. One is a hand crank with no cells. One is a pocket blower that usually needs AA or D batteries bought separately. One is a 12 V kit whose controller wants a mains socket. This grill fan buying guide is that format fork: which drive matches the power you have outdoors, and which claims you should check against the photo. Captured listings are on the [Grill fan comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/grill-fan). This page does not rank a winner and does not teach lighting steps. Three drives, and what each one needs in the box

A hand-crank bellows turns your wrist into the motor. MMSGA at about £14.90 is the example: about 350 g, bullets that say no battery, and a metal air outlet. You pack the tool and nothing else for power. The trade-off is two-handed work. A battery handheld is a pocket blower. TICFOX at about £10.39 asks for four AA cells that are not in the box. Wandisy at about £11.97 asks for one D cell. Shelf prices look low until you add cells. UK reviews often call the stream gentle next to a hairdryer. A 12 V kit is the garden option. Wxeadu sits at about £12.99, with a UK plug claimed in the bullets and a speed controller in the box. Duokon at about £18.81 is also 12 V, but the capture lists a cord and a title that also names cabinets. If there is no outdoor socket within a safe lead length, this fork is the wrong buy.

Cells, plugs, and claims that contradict the title

Read the bullets before the attribute table. MMSGA’s attributes also print battery powered and a bedroom room type. The hand-crank title and the no-battery bullets win. Nikou has cordless wording in the bullets and a Type F Schuko connector in the attributes. Check the photo. A domestic mains lead needs a BS 1363 plug, or a proper conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse, under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Schuko does not fit a UK wall socket. A loose travel adaptor is not that route. The fan is 12 V only after the controller. Wxeadu, NAVESO, and XPJBKC claim a UK or British-specification plug in the bullets. That claim is useful only if the photo matches it. If the English bullets never name the cell, as on the Itian/OFKPO row at about £8.99, budget for awkward fitting. Batteries not included is the normal line for this class.

Air you can aim, without chasing CFM

A metal or stainless outlet that keeps your hand back from the coals matters more than a bigger CFM number. A hard blast lifts ash onto the grate. Hand-crank buyers in this set often report a nozzle or hose that falls off. A waving hand fan and a Billows-style pit controller both appear near this search. Neither is this lighting job. A temperature-control fan stays on the vent. A grill fan here is a short outdoor stream you remove. Captured shelf prices run roughly £8.99–£18.81.

When a chimney is the other tool

A chimney starter is sometimes the better purchase. Weber UK’s Rapidfire is listed at £23.99 including VAT and lights a full load with firelighters, without lighter fluid. A fan in this set is for a fading bed, a small pile, or travel without the chimney. NHS advice keeps barbecues and camping stoves out of the house and out of a tent. A fan does not filter carbon monoxide. For a job match rather than this format fork, open the best grill fan page. For crank versus pocket battery only, use hand crank or electric.

Common questions

Do I want a hand crank, a battery blower, or a 12 V kit?
Match the power you already have. No cells and no socket points to a crank. Spare AA or D cells and a wish for one-handed air point to a pocket blower. A garden socket within reach points to a 12 V controller kit. Mixing those jobs on one shopping tab is how the Barbecue Fans node confuses people.
Are the batteries in the box, and which size?
Usually not. In this capture, TICFOX and Leopacat need four AA cells that are not included; Wandisy needs one D cell. Some rows never name the cell in the English bullets. Read the bullets, then check the photo, and budget the cells before the first light.
Will the plug fit a UK socket, or is it Schuko?
A UK or British-specification plug claim in the bullets still needs a photo check for BS 1363. Schuko (Type F) does not fit a UK wall socket. A travel adaptor is not the same as a proper conversion plug with the right fuse. Nikou’s listing also mixes cordless bullets with a Schuko attribute, so do not trust the text alone.
When is a chimney starter the better buy than a fan?
When you regularly light a full kettle load and can store a steel chimney. Weber UK’s Rapidfire at £23.99 including VAT is the clear full-load alternative in UK shop terms. Keep a fan for small beds, revivals, and travel without the chimney bulk.
Can I use it in a tent, a garage, or on a balcony?
No. NHS and fire-service guidance keep charcoal outdoors and off balconies and decking. A fan does not make the fuel safe indoors, in a tent, under an awning, or in a garage. Buy it only for outdoor lighting and revival.
