Contact grill vs indoor grill with a lid

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a George Foreman and a Ninja Sizzle open, and both pages say the lid matters. Only one of those lids cooks. Contact grill vs indoor grill is that split. If the top must touch the bread, you want a contact grill. If you need to stir, flip, or fry an egg on a flat plate, you want an open plate and you treat the lid as a cover. What a contact grill does

A contact grill heats two plates and closes them on the food. Both sides cook, and you are worse off if you need to stir. The Plus XL listing says nine programmes. A smaller Optigrill page explains the thickness sensor. Use it for the mechanism only. In this set the contact grills are both George Foreman Fit grills, the Immersa Medium, and the Tefal Optigrill Plus XL. The lid is the hinged top plate, not a glass cover. A toastie and a thin chicken breast suit the hinge. A fried egg, a pancake, or a loose stir does not, because the top plate lands on them. A bone that props the plate open cooks unevenly. The Fit grills give you one setting. The Immersa is one power level, at 1,300 W.

What an open plate with a lid does

An open indoor grill heats the base. You move the food. The lid holds some heat and catches some splatter. Expert Reviews, on the smaller Ninja Sizzle, found that only the base gets hot. The Pro XL bullets state 120°C to 260°C. This capture says it is not dishwasher safe. Do not mix that with the smaller model. The Ninja Sizzle Pro XL has a detachable lid, a grill plate, a flat plate, and a stated 1,150 cm². Down is a cover, not a second element on the steak. Both CUSIMAX listings sit on this side, with a tempered glass lid in the highlight. B0DZ1TYK7T includes a flat griddle you swap. B0D9NHKBMQ is one plate, with a 0°C to 230°C bullet. You still flip. Their about 95 percent less smoke line is the maker's sentence, not an independent UK test.

Which foods force the choice

Choose the contact side when the food should be pressed: a toastie, a panini, bacon, a thin burger, or a butterflied chicken breast. You do not flip as a matter of course. You still check the centre. The Medium Fit is the small press. The Large Fit is the bigger one-setting press. The Optigrill adds programmes and plates that come off. The Immersa is the press you wash after the pod comes off. Choose the open plate for eggs, peppers you shift, and a steak you turn. The Ninja's flat plate is the straightforward tool. The CUSIMAX griddle is the alternative if you accept 36 ratings and assembly. Stir-fried vegetables are an open-plate job. On a contact grill you pin the pile and steam it. No ASIN here is both machines. Plug, washing, and price are in the buying guide.

What this page will not decide

This page will not tell you which listing is cheapest. Cleaning, which branches by fixed plate, removable plate, and the Immersa pod, is in how to use an electric grill with a lid. If most meals are toasties, bacon, and pressed chicken, buy a contact grill, then choose among the Fit grills, the Immersa, and the Optigrill. If most meals are eggs, a sear, and food you move, buy the Ninja or a CUSIMAX. Owning the wrong lid is the expensive mistake.

Common questions

Does the lid always heat?
No. On the Fit grills, the Immersa, and the Optigrill the lid is a heated plate. On the Ninja Sizzle Pro XL and both CUSIMAX listings the lid is a cover. The Pro XL bullets do not say the lid is a second cooking plate.
Which one makes a toastie?
A contact grill. The top plate has to touch the bread. An open plate with a glass lid, including the Ninja and both CUSIMAX grills, leaves the top pale and unpressed.
Which one fries an egg?
An open plate with a flat surface. The Ninja's flat plate, or the griddle in the dearer CUSIMAX box, is the match. A contact grill closes a hot plate onto the egg. The same limit applies to pancakes and anything you stir.
Do I have to flip a burger on a contact grill?
Not as the normal method. Both plates are hot, so one close cooks both sides. You still check a thick patty. On the Ninja or a CUSIMAX you do flip. Home-cooked burgers should not be pink in the middle.
Is a glass lid a contact grill?
No. Tempered glass on the CUSIMAX highlights is a window and a splatter cover. Contact means a heated top plate against the food, which is the George Foreman hinge and the Optigrill hinge. A glass lid can sit down while a steak rests. It does not replace a press.
What should I buy if I want both jobs?
Not from one ASIN here. If sandwiches are most days, buy a contact grill and fry eggs in a pan. If the flat plate is most days, buy the Ninja or the CUSIMAX with a griddle and keep toasties in a separate machine.
