Wood wool firelighters for BBQ

Updated: October 2026

You are lighting charcoal in a UK garden, or a pizza oven on the patio, and the habit from the cupboard is lighter gel or a white supermarket cube. Charcoal holds that smell, and the food takes it on. Wood wool firelighters for BBQ are waxed nests of wood shavings: burn the starter out, then cook on ashed coals, and keep the barbecue outside. Stove steps sit on the [how to use wood wool firelighters](/hub/grill-accessories/wood-wool/sub/wood-wool-how-to-light) page, and the full price table is the [wood wool comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/wood-wool). Figures are amazon.co.uk prices from 15 October 2026. The Products Compared editorial team did not cook a test meal.

Why the starter matters more on a barbecue than on a stove

A stove sends the first smoke up a flue. A barbecue sends it across the food. Charcoal holds a petrol-like smell, which is why BBC Good Food tells you to leave lighter fluid in the shed. A waxed nest is the switch when the complaint is odour. Listings here say no scent, unscented or odourless. That is an observation, not an assay of the wax. The nest has to finish before the food goes on. A specialist UK guide treats wood-and-wax starters as something you can cook over once they have burnt out, and it does not say that about white cubes. The wood wool versus paraffin firelighters page separates the nest, the wax cube and the kerosene block.

Lighting with a chimney starter

Put two or three waxed nests under a chimney starter and light them so the flame is under the charcoal, not in your hand. Pro Smoke BBQ publishes that count and about 15 to 20 minutes. Weber UK’s RapidFire note uses three of Weber’s own cubes. That is not a test of wood wool. Log Barn’s listing says not to hold the firelighter while you light it. Do not pour lighter fluid onto a flame that is already going. One Firewood Hub review uses three nests in a chimney. If the top is not alight, the usual faults are damp charcoal, a rained-on nest, or a dense block. Add a fresh nest. Do not add gel.

Pizza ovens and a pile of charcoal

A pizza oven still wants the lighter finished before food sits over the fire. Log Barn’s listing says one firelighter on kindling, or two or three without kindling. A wood-fired oven follows that. A charcoal kettle follows the chimney: nests underneath, then grey ash before the food. Without a chimney, tuck two or three nests under a small pile and leave them. Loose hamper wool is the wrong substitute. The Box.it and Ei-Packaging bags state no burn time, and the 5 kg reviews are dominated by wet deliveries.

Outdoors, including in a smoke control area

GOV.UK allows outdoor barbecues, chimineas and pizza ovens. The restriction is smoke from a chimney on a building, and fuel in an appliance that is not approved for a smoke control area. In England the smoke penalty can be up to £300, and unauthorised fuel in a non-approved appliance can mean a fine of up to £1,000. A firelighter does not authorise an indoor stove. Ask the council if you are unsure. The NHS says not to use a barbecue indoors or in a tent, because of carbon monoxide. A garage with the door ajar is still indoors.

Which box, if you are only buying for the grill

Log Barn’s 200, at about £12.99 and about 6.5p, has 22,250 reviews at 4.7, and buyers describe charcoal and pizza ovens. The Firewood Hub 50 at about £7.95 suits a handful of weekend cooks. The Ecoblaze 200 at about £10.99 names barbecues and pizza ovens. Leave loose wool and the high-density block if you wanted a rolled nest. Shelf prices move after 15 October 2026. Common questions

Will they make the food taste of chemicals?
Waxed nests are what people switch to when white cubes and lighter gel taint the food. Listings here say no scent, unscented or odourless, and sampled reviews usually report little chemical smell. Let the starter burn out and wait for grey ash before the food goes on. A specialist guide limits cook-over-it to wood-and-wax starters after they have finished, and we did not run a taste test.
Can I use a barbecue in a smoke control area?
Yes, if it stays outdoors. GOV.UK allows outdoor barbecues, chimineas and pizza ovens. The tighter rules are about smoke from a building’s chimney and about fuel in an appliance that is not approved. In England those penalties can reach £300 for smoke and £1,000 for unauthorised fuel in a non-approved appliance. A wood-wool lighter does not authorise an indoor stove.
Can I light the barbecue in the garage if it is raining?
No. The NHS says not to use a barbecue or a camping stove indoors or in a tent, because of carbon monoxide. A garage is indoors even with the door ajar. Rain is a reason to wait, to use a lid, or to move the cook to another dry outdoor spot. If anyone feels the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, leave and get help.
Do I need kindling as well as the firelighter?
For charcoal, the firelighter replaces the gel, and the charcoal is the fuel. Two or three nests under a chimney or under a pile are the published outdoor method. Kindling belongs to a wood fire. Log Barn’s one-on-the-kindling line is for that wood fire. A kettle of briquettes follows the chimney instruction.
Are loose wood wool shavings a barbecue starter?
The loose bags in this comparison are hamper fill. Ei-Packaging’s 1 kg and the Box.it.pack.it 500 g and 5 kg packs do not state a burn time. Reviews of the 5 kg bag are dominated by soaking-wet deliveries. Buy a counted waxed nest, and keep the loose wool for baskets.
