How to use wood wool firelighters

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a new log burner and a box of wood wool firelighters, and the first match keeps dying. The usual causes are wet logs, the air closed, or no kindling under the flame. This is how to use wood wool firelighters for a stove or an open fire, in the order UK stove guidance describes. It does not teach a charcoal chimney. Pack choice sits on the [wood wool firelighter comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/wood-wool-firelighter). Your stove manual outranks HETAS, Stovax, and Charlton & Jenrick. What has to be true before you strike a match

The firelighter lights dry kindling. Clear the grate and set the lighting air as your manual describes. HETAS says start with dry fuel. Stovax says open the air fully. A box left in a wet porch or a sweating shed often will not catch. High-density coils in this amazon.co.uk set sometimes fail from a match and take a gas lighter. Do not pour lighter fluid, paraffin, or petrol onto a stove. Fit a carbon monoxide alarm in the room with the burner, as NHS guidance expects, and test it.

A top-down stack

HETAS describes two small logs at the base, kindling crossed above them, and two firelighters. Stovax puts one eco firelighter in the stack and another on the kindling, with the air fully open. Place the wool where the flame can reach the sticks, not buried under a solid log. Reviews often use one piece when the sticks are a normal size, and three or four when they are skinny. Close the door once they are alight, unless your manual says otherwise. HETAS then has you ease the primary air down. A Charnwood ajar-door note is for that brand only.

If it will not catch

Wet wool from a rain-soaked parcel will smoulder and die. Dry a few pieces indoors and move the box out of a damp shed. Pieces much smaller than the picture do not hold a flame long enough for thick kindling. Dense coils need a gas lighter held on the wool until it is alight. You still need kindling. Listing bullets that say you can skip it do not override HETAS or Stovax. If dry fuel and a fresh lighter still fail, look at the flue. Do not keep feeding sticks into a stove that pushes smoke back.

Smoke in the room

A little smoke on a cold flue is common. Smoke that keeps coming into the room, or soot blowing back, is a flue or installation problem. Stop, let it go out, and book a competent stove fitter. Carbon monoxide has no smell. If headache, dizziness, nausea, or confusion comes on while the stove is lit, get out and seek urgent help, including NHS 111 or 999 if someone is seriously unwell. Do not move a barbecue indoors to finish the evening. The charcoal method and that ban are on the charcoal BBQ page.

Common questions

Where do I put the wood wool in the stove?
Put one or two pieces in the kindling, where the flame can reach dry sticks, not crushed under a large log. HETAS uses two firelighters with crossed kindling over two small logs. Stovax places one eco firelighter in the stack and another on the kindling. Follow your manual if it shows a different slot. Burying the wool is why the flame dies before the logs take.
Do I still need kindling?
Yes. Stove guidance from HETAS and Stovax still specifies kindling. A listing bullet that says no kindling is needed does not override that. Use small, dry sticks crossed so air can move through them. The firelighter is the match for that lattice. It is not a replacement for dry logs.
How many pieces for a small stove?
HETAS and Stovax describe two. Reviewers in this capture often manage with one piece on a small stove when the sticks are a fair size, and they use three or four when the pieces are thin. Start with one or two. Add another only if the first is visibly too small to reach the kindling, not because the title promised a ten-minute burn.
Why did it go out?
Usually the wood was damp, the air slide was closed, the wool was wet from storage, or there was no kindling. High-density coils are a separate case and often need a gas lighter. Check those four before you assume the box is faulty. If dry fuel and open air still fail, and smoke comes back into the room, stop and think about the flue.
Can I use a match?
Yes on loose, dry wood wool. Hold it to the waxed shred until the piece is alight, then close the door as your manual requires. On the high-density coils in this set, reviewers say a match sometimes fails and a gas lighter is more reliable. Do not help a stubborn piece with lighter fluid.
Should the door stay open?
Only if your stove manual says so. HETAS has you close the door and then reduce the primary air as the fire gets going. Charlton & Jenrick say not to keep opening it. One Charnwood note about an ajar door applies to that brand, not to every stove in a UK living room. An open door on the wrong model spills smoke and can overfire the box.
What if the box was left in the rain?
Dry a few pieces indoors and try those, and do not store the rest in the shed if the shed is damp. Rain-soaked wool smoulders and goes out, which looks like a bad brand and is often a wet parcel. If the dried pieces light and the wet ones do not, you have your answer. Replace a box that stayed sodden.
